Another typical instagram photorealist artist
https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UUcBnT6LsxANZjUWqpjR8Jpw&v=T6R75dMYgF0

What I'm wandering is, did he copy those drawings from a photo? Or did he draw them from imagination? I looked at his website and it looks like nothing but photorealistic photo copys

actually, I think nvm, I he just copies photos

This is a rather common picture of JP's velociraptors from JP3

He's good at what he does. Props to him for using masks and a airbrush, that's not something you often see from your "typical instragram artist"
>>
So long as he's not secretly tracing the figures then he's talented enough.

For class i have to create a body of work revolving around fortune cookies, but i cant think of many ideas. If any of you guys have any ideas or things you would like me to draw ill do it. There arent many rules for the project outside of having a fortune cookie somewhere on the piece.
The pic is a reference of what i can draw and has some cookies.

>>
>>2547807
1) That's a retarded assignment.
2) Next time resize your image and rotate it.
3) Does it need to actually have the cookie in the piece? I would take a different approach, and do pieces based on what fortune cookies mean/represent. You can make a list of all the words or ideas you associate with fortune cookies and then base pieces on those themes. For example, here are some things I think of:
-Americanization of culture
-hopes and desires
-opening things
-discovery
-...."in bed"
-modernization of religion/spiritual things
-seeing the future
-chance
-self-fulfilling prophecy
4) if you literally need to have fortune cooking in there, then I would try to take some abstract shapes out of the cookies. They have rather strange forms and depending how you light them I bet you could get some really interesting shadow shapes. Or crumble them and see how that changes things.
>>
Hands opening fortune cookies, gold and jewels fall out.

Geometric reduction of basic fortune cookie shape, add lustrous surface and funky aesthetic values.

Fortune cookies with dark prophetic predictions. Spooky dark and gritty.

Why has this been the case for every art program I've ever used?

You can use "K" to "ree move" your selection.

Main problems are butchered inconsistent perspective, proportions that aren't kept together, very boring background and attempts at lighting without identifying sources of it.

Yes, I love anime.

Okay example, look at western cartoons from 70's, 80's and 90's then look at something like Adventure Time or any current Cartoon Network show.

how is the nyc art community?

specifically for animation, illustration and comic?

This is unrelated, but I find it entertaining that your opening picture is from a designer from where I'm from...and it's not New York.
>>

It's a big city with a lot of art stuff there. Print illustration is massive in New York. Not sure about comics or animation, but I bet you it is still better than most cities.

New York City has a pretty great art community, especially for illustration and comics.
If you have the time, I'd check out the Society of Illustrators and see what they have to offer. It's a museum/community focused on both illustration and comic art that offers some pretty great stuff like exhibitions and figure drawing.
Unfortunately, the animation scene over there isn't too great and everything is moving west. There's only a handful of good studios like Titmouse and Augenblick, but other than that I can't really say much about the animation community there.

Does anyone else have trouble making "pieces"?
i have no problem with sketching in my notebook all damn day, but i never want to make a finished
piece because i hate the way it looks usually, want to start over, and do this all damn day til the sun is gone.

Anyone else experience this? Any ways i can combat it more?

>>
>>2545881
I hate my sketches.
That's why I first sketch out a few ideas and then choose which one I want to finish.
The other sketches won't see the light of day ever again.

How about you write down you idea for your picture first.
Let's say you want to draw a knight fighting a dragon.
Limit yourself to 8 thumbnails / rough sketches.
Choose the one you like most and then just finish it. Don't do more thumbs and don't switch to a new one until you're done.
>>
>>2545881
realistically it's because you fucking suck. there's no point polishing a turd so don't worry about your "pieces". Just get good, and you'll notice your work becomes more complete. Gogo draw.
>>
>>2545881
Top Jake Parker tip if its not working from the first minute of sketching don't force it. Abandon it and sketch something else. The same goes with rendering a sketch if its not working go with your instinct and abandon it try again.

Do people not like cartoony art anymore? Did people ever?

I have a couple of favorite artists and I noticed, even if it's original character and not fanart stuff, certain styles do well. Anything that looks anime-ish, Disney-ish, chibis, that very modern-day webcomic look, those all well. But when an artist draws really exaggerated cartoony work, John K or Ed Edd n Eddy type stuff, nobody really flocks to it.

I'm thinking of people like Themrock who have been drawing for a lot longer and have been active online for awhile and still have less followers than someone like Natasha Allegri.

In animation?. It looks pretty neat, I still watch some old animation from time to time.
In image, static?. meh. I don't hate it, I even followed some artists that made stuff like that when I used DA, but while i like it, it isn't something I actively search while searching for art, or something I would make.
>>
honestly it's just how attractive the style is

the reason anime and disney stuff do so well is because it's concentrated appeal; the average person finds it good-looking and wants to see more. cartoon style works well in animation because it's expressive, and statically it can be cool if you can appreciate the stylization and expressiveness, but for the bulk of the internet (i.e. getting a lot of fans) they don't give a shit about expressiveness. they want to look at things that they think is pretty.
>>
>>2546190
This. I've had plebs say to me American cartoon styles are ugly. Mostly everyone wants wholesome cal arts cuteness or anime.

Basically you gotta make things fuckable. Not that I have any kind of following but it's just what I've noticed. I think only stoners and weird types like the kind you find on 4chan appreciate cartoon styles.

I'm really hoping I can get some help from you guys here. Basically whenever I'm drawing traditionally for more than an hour or two I keep getting back pain around my neck/trap area.

I have an adjustable drafting table and I've tried pretty much every posture and tilt on the thing from 0 to 90 degrees , I've tried taking breaks every half an hour and still have the same problem of back pain.

If I work on my tablet I don't have nearly the same problem which Is I think due to being able to draw with my arm flat on a surface while looking straight at my screen. While traditional drawing I'm forced for either my neck to be in a shitty position or my arm to be unsupported.

It's sad because I'm actually in decent shape, Im not some 50 year old fat fuck who's been drawing for 35 years.

If you guys can't help me I'm forced to be a digital tablet fag, I don't even think I could use a cintiq since it'd have a similar problem.
