I made this comic for class. I know its pretty bad bc i was running low on time, but im posting it bc i wanna know if it translates well with what i wanted it to say.. so basically
>guy at friends house
>friend in another room says feel at home
>guest had to borrow clothes bc idk(not rlly important bc we only had a page)
>friends clothes are larger
>reaching in his pants with all the room he has
>friends sister walks in thinks hes doing something else
>both are horrified
>sis thinks hes beatin and he knows she thinks hes beating
So critiques on style, or shading, or readability? My teacher said he understood, but he already knew the story line so idk if others would desu.

Reads right to left by the way.
>>
It sort of translates, but it could be more effective.
The first two panels feel kind of wasted. The first, nothing is really told visually, nor is the location established in a way that is made use of later.

The second panel sort of the same. I don't really know why we're looking at underwear when it's pants that are being exchanged, it might be more efficient to show the guest's discarded pants as he's picking up the friend's pants to hint at the size difference.
The sister's voice could also be place in this panel rather than the third, to create suspense for her arrival at an inopportune time, rather than having a panel of no text sandwiched between two panels of full exchanges.

The third panel, it doesn't do much visually. The pants don't look particularly roomy, and it's only context that tells us he's even got his hand down there.

The fourth panel feels a little redundant coming before two more extreme reaction panels. Rather than a closeup of the sister dropping her tray, another option might be to put it in a reverse shot of the boy with his hand in his pants at the moment they notice one another, as a pause before impact to give the dramatic reaction faces a place to launch from, as well as establishing that not only is the sister shocked but the guest understand what she thinks he's doing.

I don't really get the significance of the final panel, if there's a joke I'm missing (and stupid sister, water is not a snack!). An added punchline might be the guest getting soaked all over again, but idk if this is a set script or something.

Overall, I don't really get a sense of movement in terms of where people are/move and what they're doing, if you know what I mean. It makes the panels feel very static, rather than progressions of a movement and story, and creates an over-reliance on text to understand what's happening.
It might help to first think of the scene in motion, and then pick snapshots that best communicate all that's going on in between panels.

Christ.

I bought the artbook for this little animation made by an independent studio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmkAcGz1BJk and when I got it and found it was right to left the shit made me want to throw up. The art was fun and all but when you throw out a cultural/linguistic convention just to be "different" in a totally superficial way it's just a needless annoyance.

As for your comic, I don't know what the hell's going on.

Go to /gd/. This is clearly a photo.

Also, that's not remotely how water looks (either the droplets or the actual pool of water), that wood paneling is artificial as fuck, and it doesn't look very good for anything other than a split second glance.

Then again, it's an advertisement, so I guess needing to look good is debatable...

I'd like to get a few art pieces printed, but I have a few questions. I want large prints, so what image parameters are required? Do I need a certain resolution, dpi, etc? I've seen prints online made on "cotton rag". Is that the norm, or are most printed on paper?
Is there anything else I should be looking for? Does anyone have experience with Society6 prints?
If I were to make a print, where would I want to go? A Kinkos or Staples?

Go to artpal dot com. On top of making decent quality prints and having the most competitive net return per print, they also have suggested pixel dimensions for different sizes. Generally though, I just try to make my smallest dimension on any piece 4000 px minimum as a rule of thumb.
>>
>>2548861
So the images do have to be very large.
Thanks.

I want to order a few X-large prints from Society6, but I don't know how large the original artwork is. I'm worries that it may come out looking pixilated.

An important factor in print quality is the number of pixels per inch (ppi) used to make the print. The more pixels per inch, the finer the detail in the print will be and the sharper it will look. Probably the minimum value for reasonable print quality is 180ppi. For a better image you can go to 240ppi and for the best quality you may have to go to 300ppi.

So the math is actually pretty easy. Find out how many square inches you need the print to be, make the digital image as large as you need.

So I went to Japan for a month and did 3 freelance projects for a visual-K store (drawing designs to print on the clothing).

Upon leaving, the owner said he'd like to continue working with me through email, and he gave me the specs for 3 more illustrations he wanted.

I get back to the U.S. and complete the very basic sketches in a week and email him. It was how I was working with him in the store: I'd make the basic sketches, and he'd tell me what changes he'd want and I'd make them, then ink.

I emailed him May 20th and haven't gotten a reply yet. What would be "proper" in terms of emailing him again? I've heard it's normal for people to take a while to respond when it comes to graphic art work??

Also, this business is only ran by him and his wife, and they are both rather old, operating it 6 days a week. So I'm trying to factor that in, too.

>>
Wait another month, after 3 months, it's likely too late. 90 days is when e-mails are auto deleted generally.

Aside from that, do you speak Japanese, anon? How do you do freelance work in Japan and then just come back to U.S.?
>>
Give him another week, do it before July. E-mail errors happen plenty, especially for old people. He might've missed it entirely.

also post you're work
>>

>>2547917
Thank you for the advice. So I guess I could wait another 2 weeks combining these two suggestions?

As for how I got work there...it's kind of a "luck" story. Literally, all I did was walk into the store. The guy liked my outfit and he randomly asked me if I drew and if I had a sketchbook on me he could look at. I showed him, and he wanted me to draw some things for him. I speak very basic Japanese. I attempted to write my email both in Japanese and in English, but I am pretty sure I probably fucked up big time with the Japanese. Though at least I tried? When I was in Japan, barely any westerners even said "thank you" in Japanese or asked if they spoke English.

I had to come back because I am legally only allowed to be out of this country for a month due to being a NEET on SSI. I'd rather no show my art, because 4chan reasons. Sorry.

This is fucking retarded, even by Shadbase standards

I can't find anything on this guy from his pre-Disney days.

Did he seriously come straight out of a public liberal arts college, move to California, and then start animating for Disney after working as a tour guide for them for a little bit? He went from an internship to a supervising animator in a little over 5 years. What was in that letter he got from Frank Thomas, the willpower and skill of a thousand old men? A wish granting incantation?

This man is the hero we all need. I wish there was more information on him. What an inspiration.

I had an animation teacher who got picked up during their 90's Renaissance. He said during the 90's, it wasn't as hard to be an artist/animator and get picked up by Disney because they were aggressively looking for people. Remember it was still recent that Don Bluth took their remaining good artists and ran and they had to start training all new people and re-assigning department heads. They almost couldn't find ENOUGH 2D animators just to meet the requirements they needed to pull off stuff like Atlantis. A shit ton of fucking art went into a project like that. Then you have to take into account Dreamworks and Warner Brothers as 2D competitors, Pixar was starting up and looking to re-train 2D artists into CG. The aspiration to work in animation was not nearly as big as it is now.

But now, everyone and their grandmother wants to work in animation. The application process is so goddamn competitive, you have hundreds of aspiring artists graduating every single year who want to work in animation. And since feature film has shifted to CG, 2D animators must resort to being storyboard artists or character designers, which means those positions are filled to the fucking brim with applications.

Basically, it's about fifty times more competitive now to get into Disney than it was in the 90's, which is saying something because it was still a big place to be working at. He didn't do anything special besides being at the right place, right time. Like Pete Doctor.

You won't get much specific help unless you actually post your image that you are struggling with.

If you are really stuck you can colour pick off an image that has the palette you want. Flat colours can look good on almost any inking style btw.

well if pic is related, dont make the lines black but a darker value off the colors they are attached to works well I think.

Sure, there's lots of basic issues with this, but at least the artist is clearly pushing their boundaries and trying something different. I'd be interested in seeing their work in another 5 or 10 years in the hopes that they continue to pursue their own aesthetic while filling in the gaps of their technical skills.

Or you can be a dick and make fun of them.

I work mostly in one or two layers for basically this reason. When I was using multiple layers it was infuriating, and it was distracting to have to regularly stop and make sure my layers were in order.

Nowadays I generally have a foreground and background layer, and generally use a lot of temporary layers then merge them down pretty soon after using them. I lock layers I don't want to merge into by accident.

I tend to paint rather than do detailed linework, though.

it kind of depends on what you prefer and what art you make honestly.

I personally would take a multi-media sketchbook, micron pens, a white gel pen, something to color with. I guess colored pencils in your case, for me, those take too long to color in large spaces, so I use markers. Prismacolor markers blur your ink for sure though. it can have a nice affect if intended.

Or you could use good ol' pencil and eraser. I dislike anything lighter than 2B. A kneaded eraser is really fucking helpful too.
>>
Buy all the things. A few sketchbooks and a pencil wrap with some graphite/color pencils, brush pens, markers, and a technical pen/rollerball/fountain pen/whatever the fuck you like. Maybe a small box with some watercolors or gouache and a waterbrush. If you're carrying stuff to work every day a big box of color pencils is probably going to be clunky.
>>
Colored pencils are extremely time consuming. I prefer sketching with a pencil then doing line work with a pen and finishing it with markers and details on top with colored pencil.

Your lines wont run if you use the right kind of ink with it. Most microns and Fiber Castell inks are not dissolved by the alcohol. The markers give you a very quick way to lay down brilliant colors and then you can do detail work with the pencils.

The biggest down side to this is the cost. Markers, pencils, and paper with a smooth finish are expensive.

Do a hundred more. Do a thousand more. Just keep drawing.
Most will be shit, that's a fact. But eventually they'll all amalgamate into a grey blurr.
The only ones you'll truly remember are the good ones.
You think studios are full of perfect, faultless art? No, they're full of trash. But they're absolutely filled to BRIM with trash.
You only see the good.

You'll also get better and they'll be less trash. Your trash will become another person's goal standard.
