This question addresses any anions with an interest in sculpture; do you know of any good resources for learning sculpture? And also how am I supposed to approach sculpting from a photo? Do you have any good reference from different angles?

What do you think about this painting?
It's huge, it's from Mexico. Supposedly super expensive, done by one of the best painters in Mexico. At least that's what the rich guy told me about the painting.

So, what do you think?

I draw from 11 00 to 14 00 and then rest and then from 16 30 to 20 00 every day I can, but I'm realizing I'm bored when I rest, I come to /ic/ and see some great drawings and just want to keep drawing, playing video games is no longer interesting, what other activities can I do to prevent myself from just drawing and burning myself out of motivation?

Hi /ic/, can you help me find this painting? It's vaguely similar to pic related in terms of the subject; a dog looking out of an opened door; the world beyond the door is dark. I don't have the painting saved, unfortunately.

If you want something more "cartoony", I'd say Kaiba or Metropolis.

But then again, what do you mean by "anime" style?

There's always talk and thread about comics but they're usually just about webcomics or self-published material.

Is anyone here trying to break into the mainstream industry instead? Or even working in it?
I just wrapped up an Image pitch with an established writer and am currently doing a short story for a Kickstarter anthology. What bout you guys?

I dig comics and I've considered working in the industry but I've heard that the pay is atrocious, like barely livable at all. And add on all the stress and overtime you're gonna have to put in just to draw someone else's story. Doesn't really appeal to me. I'm still thinking about either self publishing or somehow getting my own ip published by image, but that's a long ways off.

How'd you get to do a pitch? Also post work if you're comfortable.

That first one is absolute aids, it looks like the first time the "artist" has ever even touched a brush

How easy is it for you to just draw ? I feel it is the main reason why some people appear talented. It seems to me certain people have a certain inclination to be able to draw continuously and at demand. I see pages of sketchbooks and I'm more impressed by the fact that the page is filled out by variations on the same subject than by its quality.

However as all skill I believe it can be trained, and so I ask you how do you approach that aspect of art ? What kind of routines do you use and for what purposes ?

Just draw.
>>
Those people who can fill their sketchbooks with variations of the same thing and on demand can do so because they think 'through' their drawing.
They have to fulfill an objective. (the most important step)
Draw their research. (what material and texture will this be in, and how can I depict it? What camera do I use, what time of day, etc.)
Brainstorm ideas on paper
And do their first attempt on fulfilling that objective. (It may not be the right answer.)
The rest of the pages are their 2nd, 3rd, nth attempt on fulfilling that same objective, whether it be to design something or tell a story.
When you do it that way you'll be surprised by how fast a sketchbook will get filled. Sure, quite a number of pages won't be pretty but at least it has purpose. And if you know your basics like shape, form, perspective, your ideas will have clarity, which is the most important thing to have.
It may seem like a no brainer, but people who don't question the really basic work process stuff turn out to be scrubs in my opinion. 'Just Drawing' won't cut it.
>>
>>2615130
thank you for your insight. Having an objective and testing an idea are definitely beneficial to keep your mind flowing throughout a session. I believe there are many more aspects to it but it doesn't seem like it interests people so I'll leave it at that.

I want to try this out, lets have a character designing thread.

The gist of it is, people make prompts, others draw a character to fit that prompt. By doing this it not only lets us practice our technical abilities, but our imagination and concept abilities as well. And get critiques regarding our lack of imagination instead of just our lack of skill.

Concept promts can be anywhere from
>character who lives in a sewer
to
>futuristic city after the ice poles have melted, primarily dominated by those of islamic faith.

If this is a bad idea feel free to call me a faggot.

And I guess a prompt to get things started.

>Character is a smuggler in the near future (think 40-50 years) living between two middle eastern nations. They clearly looks like they were born elsewhere but has been living there for a good portion of their life.
>>
>>2581162
Description:
The new challenge is to design an anthropomorphic tribal warrior. You will choose an existing real world animal, combine it with a human figure, and design what this would look like if that character was part of a primitive tribe of warriors. Keep in mind the type of environment the animal comes from and try to fit that into the characters design, costume, and weapon. For example, if the animal you choose is from the jungle then it's costume and weapon may be quite different than an animal from the African savanna or snowy mountains. Use the animal and it's region to influence what the design will be.

As always, this challenge is intended to inspire you to push yourself to learn and grow as an artist, as well as to give you fuel to create something you might later polish into a finished product. Whether your creation is a loose sketche or a portfolio-ready piece is up to you. Do what is most helpful or enjoyable for you!

Rules and Guidelines:
-This a tribal character/creature challenge where your combining any animal with a human and using the animals geographic region to influence the costume and design..
-Approach it as if you were designing this for a video game or film.
-Any medium is allowed.
-You are free to do a simple concept with a focus on design and no background, or take it to a full illustration depending on how in depth you want to go.
-Due is the end of the week

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

I noticed a pattern in artists.

Most often, artists who possess a very recognizable and unique style and can produce good looking sketches/drawings effortlessly are... rather awkward persons, not good with words at all and even less good at even simply explaining what they're actually doing. You can easily spot how messy their blogs and shits are, how they've never used the caps-lock key in their entire life or just how apathetic looking they appear. It might look like pretentiousness at first but soon enough you realize it's just awkwardness. They don't often finish what they're working on, it's often left somewhat unfinished (while still looking relatively good) and just move on to another piece, most of the time because of "boredom" or once again without really knowing the reason. I don't mean this negatively but it's as if they were slightly autistic.
A few of my favorite artists are that way; here on /ic/ we even have a few good artists who are like that, but by respect for them I won't mention their names.

On the other hand, and I think it's the majority here, we have the more or less analytical people, who think a lot, who study and backup millions of references, look up to many, many artists but have a really hard time achieving this level of easiness described earlier. It's as if they were constantly searching themselves through art but never entirely seeing the end of it, as if endlessly waiting for the "click". As a contrast here, these people aren't usually awkward, they type normally, express themselves properly, are good/average with words, have decently organized blog etc and are able to sustain a normal conversation.

Thoughts? Is becoming very good at art out of reach for people who try too hard to always analyze everything instead of just being an "awkward autist" and draw away without second thoughts or is there still hope?

tl;dr : are naturally mentally easy-going people advantaged when it comes to art as opposed to more analytical people?

I don't think one is necessarily superior over the other. I think analytical artists can get caught up in the grind or be too fixed on a certain goal (I want to draw like *blank*) rather than exploring their own inner world. That being said, rushed or unfinished drawings, not pushing yourself to improve, that can be just as bad.

I think taste is the great equalizer in the art world. I love fine art, I love trying to improve my craft and carefully consider everything, but no matter how hard I try it's never going to be as appealing to some people as a quick sketch of a QT girl by someone else. I think that's great.
