What are things to avoid when drawing fanart?
What is the optimal fanart like?
Must fanart add something new?
Can fanart be art?
>>3093408
step 1: never do fan art.
>>3093408
1) Tracing, claiming it as your own thing, making money with it, doing NSFW of it or anything that "could harm the franchise" (Nintendo, for instance, doesn't like that).
2) & 3) Fanart that brings something new without massacring the original franchise.
4) Yes, it already is...
>>3093413
You can, as long as you're not 100% relying on it. An artist is supposed to be a creative person, after all... (the best to do is 50/50 : 50% fanart for exposure & get yourself noticed, 50% your own stuff. As you get more & more known, do less fanart & more of your own stuff.)

I want to draw like this.

can you draw the rest of the body aswell? there's some serious issues with your face perspective tho. the jaw looks like a sort of butchered 3/4 view but all her features are a perfect frontal shot. The fact that you show one ear m akes me think you wanted a 3/4 shot, in which case you should rotate the features aswell

there's really no hope for any of us it looks like
When was the last time you went to a gallery/museum/exhibit? Who's your favorite contemporary & classic artist? What is your favorite art movement?

i ain't never been to no moseeum. But i stop to check out art whenever i can. at the local fair i like to look at the art the kids make (that's as close as i can get to a museum)
2. tthose r dum words
I like KJG and uhhh CalumAlexanderWatt is great too. another instagrammer called BasedGunman is pretty great. I love the work of HE Giger. Also john singer sargent. And zdzislaw beksinski and simon stalenhag. I feel like trying to group artists to a style (is contemporary/classic styles?) is a little weird, since most artists like to vary the stylizations they draw in.
3. don't got no favrit art movement. those are stupid n very vague
>>3092785
all of those things sound gay af

Hitler was the original /ic/ NEET from 1905.
"After dropping out of high school in 1905 at age sixteen, Adolf Hitler spent the next few years in brooding idleness. His indulgent mother patiently urged him to learn a trade or get a job. But to young Hitler, the idea of daily work with its necessary submission to authority was revolting.
With his father now dead, there was no one who could tell young Hitler what to do, so he did exactly as he pleased. He spent his time wandering around the city of Linz, Austria, visiting museums, attending the opera, and sitting by the Danube River dreaming of becoming a great artist.
Hitler liked to sleep late then go out in the afternoon, often dressed like a young gentleman of leisure and even carried a fancy little ivory cane. When he returned home, he would stay up well past midnight reading and drawing.
He would later describe these teenage years free from responsibility as the happiest time of his life."
"As a young boy he had shown natural talent for drawing. His gift for drawing had also been recognized by his high school instructors. But things had gone poorly for him in high school. He was a lazy and uncooperative student, who essentially flunked out. To escape the reality of that failure and avoid the dreaded reality of a workaday existence, Hitler put all his hope in the dream of achieving greatness as an artist."
>high school drop out
>loner
>hated working for others
>lived as NEET with mommy's support
>dreamed of becoming artist
>enjoyed reading and drawing.
How many of you can relate to young Hitler?
I feel like Hitler's artwork is often critiqued with prejudice, from a purely artistic perspective, what do you think of his art? (pic related)
He got rejected from Vienna Art School twice..
>>3089663
>that messy cast shadow in the foreground
>those midget people
idk who this hitler guy is but meh
His rejections from Vienna Art also makes me very curious, were artistic standards SUPER high back in the early 18th century? or are art schools just way more lenient now in accepting shit artists?
In this day and age, Hitler likely have gotten into the best art schools with his ability.
"One modern art critic was asked to review some of his paintings without being told who painted them and judged them "quite good". The different style in which he drew human figures, however, the critic said, represented a profound uninterest in people."

I could meme arrow almost the entire post but thanks for posting. Shows how the spirit of neet transcends space and time.
is drawing a waste of time?
Why not just do 3D? Apparently its much easier.
I keep hearing drawing is a waste of time, and it hurts because i love drawing, and i want to keep doing it, but they have a point.
3D is much easier, 3D is more employable, 3D doesnt look as garbage as most of the sketches from the average /ic/ user
Dont get me wrong, i adore drawing, but im legit scared that im just wasting my time
Both are hard. 3d also tends to be harder to make something that looks good, especially characters.
>>3094234
>is drawing a waste of time?
For you, yes it probably is. But unfortunately 3D won't be much of a difference I imagine. Most 3D work done by amateurs looks like utter garbage, way worse than amateur drawings because at least there you can sometimes find some appeal in the linework, the design, the style etc. A shitty 3D model on the other hand has literally no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
>>3094234
>3d is easier
How? you can neglect entire sides of a figure in drawing
>look up "foreshortening" on google images
>get this
We're gonna make it bros
>>3094077
Just use a reference if it's too hard
Foreshortening can be unpredictable/unmeasarable a lot of times

http://algenpfleger.tumblr.com/post/95847707615/your-work-has-kind-of-stagnated-over-the-years
What do you guys think of his tumblr response? Was it a legitimate reason or an excuse for not improving?
One of his reasons that stuck out to me was that the reason he wasn't improving was because now he has a social life. I know there is this whole meme on /ic/ on how you should draw 12 hours a day but have you guys thought about what you're sacrificing? what good would being good at art do you if you don't have any social skills or friends or a spouse or in good health?
>>3094031
Having social skills, friends, a spouse and even good health are all useless if you suck at art.
>>3094031
well like he said, he does have those things now. so it's up to you i guess, you can get better more slowly and have a life or you can get better real quick and have the life later. although perhaps appleflinger is unique and drawing 12 hours a day doesn't work out for most people.
>>3094031
He said he can produce higher quality work far more frequently, sounds like improvement to me, just a different kind.
>gonna start animation school soon
>my country does provide good animation education (best in my country)
>but very hard to get money as Animator in this shitty Asian country
>Searching for good master degree college in another country
>Wanna work overboard too, which country is the best to provide position as Animator?
>dont know why I post it in IC
>English suck AF, gonna work for it
>>3093900
Start your own animation company.
I hope to aim for that someday myself.
>>3093900
Where are you from? What school are you attending?
>>3093900
3D animation is the hottest thing right now, I'm sure if you're good, you could just work from the comfort of your home.
How does one steal from another artist?
>>3093882
>"I like how that looks"
>study how he achieved that
>apply it to whatever you're doing under its specific context
Be an expert mimic. I can't do voices, but I can do other artists...
>>3093901
>i can do other artists
o-oh my
Is there anything out there that tells me how good I have to when I draw for 1 year, 2 years etc.? I don't really know if I am improving and I want to know if I had to practice even more deliberately.
There has to be some standarized measurement of your skill at a certain level.
>>3093830
bump for interest.
Not unless you go to an art school where they specifically gauge your progress. Self taught progress is all according to what you do, and at that point you would have to list everything you've done very specifically. If you want to compare yourself to art school students, just search up year 1 of any art school and you'll see how far they get.
>>3093830
speed and accuracy
thats what i gauge it with

Were you all this bad when you started "Fun with a Pencil" by Loomis? I feel like shit and so down. I used to consider myself an artist, but then I realized that I was symbol drawing, so yeah, I'm trying to "learn again".
The first and the second drawings were copied so i'm not referring to these.
>>3093730
Got some others
>>3093730
I was far worse
Don't worry if they look bad, you're drawing to learn, not to make something look good. Keep at it.
Also try drawing upside down just to get a better feel for it, you're still not drawing in perspective correctly.
>>3093745
Thanks, that really cheered me up to continue.
