Anyone has this Ruan Jia paintings? Please share.
Where did you get these? I'm also interested.
Does anyone have any experience with the online Watts Atelier?
I've been trying it for about a month now and I've got mixed feelings about it. I was wondering if any of you tried it and if so what are your thoughts on it?

Watts is good if you want to do 8 hour long paintings of photo-realistic figure drawings.

It is pretty meh though. Why is that ignorant?
He produced much better work in his prime
What would be some good mythologies to make an illustration about? I know all of the typical ones, but are there any more obscure stories or beings that I could possibly illustrate?
I've been stuck in this artist block for almost all of summer and I'm sick of it. So I'm trying to force myself to make something. I thought that this might be an interesting start.

All mythology is pretty interesting once you begin to read into it. If you want something "new" then pick a culture that you don't know much about and read their stories.
draw Baba Yaga, it's a witch from the Slavic mythology
Read Ovid's Metamorphoses first of all, perhaps even Mythologies by Fulgentius and Dialogue of the Gods by Lucian... However I would suggest,in order to make a complete painting out of myths, to not look at the end as an illustration.
Of the modes of imitation, things are painted either as they are in reality, worse than as things are, or better. Things imitated are forms, actions, costumes, etc.
There are different arrangements out of using myths as subject matter arising from the relationship of the picture to the texts. The worst is almost always ironic mythology. The most basic is a literal interpretation of a scene without regard to meaning, the end of which is simple pleasure of looking. The next requires more regard for the meaning of the scene. Another makes use of the characters as archetypes interacting with each other and/or the setting to demonstrate relationships of ideas to each other, either towards moral, ethical, or contemplative purposes. There is a yet more inventive type which is similar but goes beyond the conventional setting of the characters. It might have figures which are not entirely mythic characters, such as Romulus or Perseus, but rather uses personification of abstract concepts such as Justice or Fortune. One might invent a completely novel interrelationship of concepts and use figures to give them substance for example.
For the more complex types, the true virtue of the painting lies on the painter's ability to invent coherent stories and is fully appreciated by recognition of the viewer. This belongs to a type of arrangement called mythological allegory. The highest order requires a deep understanding of the subject gleaned from philosophy, poetry, and the painter's own ability to relate themes. Which is to say, one must actually read the passages out of the sources and more, and understand the entire meaning, rather than a simple knowledge of the action.
Critique my cross hatching.
I've been studying this style for about a year now. What do you think? (Bloodborne and Souls stuff)

What methods you guys using to draw torso? build the spine first?
>>2646792
I do a line for the spine then the rib cages and hip bones. after that just connect them.
>>2646792
Nowadays I don't really have a really formulaic approach, but a method I found useful was to draw a T with a V on the bottom. The horizontal line om the T represents the top of the torso, the vertical line is the midline and the V shape is either the pubic arch (as if wearing a swimming suit) on the front or the sacrum & tailbone on the back. Those lines are easy to draw in perspective and works in most situations.
A Hampton-style gestural approach, usually with two opposing curves for chest and hips.
Sorry for shit quality.
draw the missing feet
Nice try footfag.

What (free) software would be the best for digital drawing if im using a Surface 3?
>pic unrelated
>>2645571
Krita. It's really, really good right now.
honestly mate, you'd be better off with CSP for a surface. It's built to be more touchscreen friendly, and you can utilize the whole program without hotkeys or a keyboard/mouse, albeit it at a slower pace. All freeware that I've used on my surface 4 read any contact as a stroke, so trying to pan with your fingers results in lines on your work. CSP can pan, pinch and zoom, and rotate with the capacitive sensors and keep the stylus reserved for actual pen work.
Skeme is a shitty and untalented graffiti writer.
I am so sick of how many people look up to this guy, he sucks arse only painted trains for a year back in 1984 and talks like he knows everything about graffiti.
People just believe all this guys shit because of the style wars documentary he was in.
If it wasnt for that people would realise how dumb the shit he says is.

Its not really importortant at all.

why does the art world -- the critics, curators, and connoisseurs -- value concept over skill and technique?
>>2641288
Because critics curators and connoisseurs are people who couldnt make good art
>>2641288
Do you have any idea how many people can draw some boring uninspired hyper-realistic white lady? Do you have any idea how long and grating art history classes would be if we talked about them all?
>>2641291
Not a lot of people can paint like Bouguereau, no.
Tell me which one is better.
