so i was doing my daily sketch and stumbled upon a new style that i can do and i plane to expand on it its the pic. any one else had this happen to them? stumbling into a artistic break through?

You should study more before you go having 'breakthroughs' because i count more mistakes than masteries in this.

if you care, iirc there's a page or so in keys to drawing on local values and light patterns, the same stuff that's in your picture

No I don't want that. I like the way Hiroshi Misawa draws and I find his images really clear. I want his book specifically.

What is the protocol for getting featured in magazines like ImagineFX and "news" websites like Kotaku?
I know a lot of people who get features, articles, etc. that aren't bad... but they're certainly not great.
Normally I'm not one to shy away from just asking people directly about how they did something, but it's kind of an awkward question to be like, "Hey, I'm happy that you got featured and all, but was there more than just talent behind why that happened?" Inevitably and understandably people are going to take this personally even though honestly I'm far less interested in critiquing them than I am in figuring out what more goes into the process that I'm not aware of. In this field (and many others, I'm sure), there's such a downplay of any factor of your success that isn't just grit and hard work - even though things like one's network are arguably MORE important than your portfolio in many cases. I know the world is full of nepotism. That's not any one artist or person's fault, I just want to understand the depth of it in any particular situation.
...or am I assuming to much?
Does anyoen have experience with the process of featuring atists on platforms such as this - either as part of the platform or an artist that was featured at one time or another?
Thanks.

ImagineFX you need to submit your stuff to be featured, or you can offer to them to do a tutorial for them but they have a long queue of people already for that apparently. Not sure about Kotaku.

I've been interviewed by a few small blogs before. The #1 thing I could recommend is to make a series of work, instead of standalone illustrations.

Series of work are infinitely more shareable, and it makes for a very easy piece of content for blogs to reuse.

A series of fan art with a twist on it (either in idea or execution) is by far the easiest thing to widely share online.

You know, a muscle is just a 3D form with certain volume and shape. If you just outline the form instead of bringing it out of the paper, any effort spent on learning the muscles and designing the figure will be wasted. Read Keys to drawing, then Drawabox. Learn to draw the form before designing it.

Another thing - I don't think you have the right perception of what "style" actually is.
You can either learn the rules and then show your style in how you bend them to your advantage, or you don't learn the rules and then style will only be and excuse to hide your mistakes and prevent you from progressing.

You have ideas, but you don't know how to draw yet.

Instead of making threads for your own art, use one of the designated threads. In this case, use this one: >>2686936

I have a friend that wants to learn how to draw and I offered to sit down with him over the next few days or weeks and slowly teach him the very basics and if see if he is still interested in drawing or not.

Any suggestions on what concepts and what order I could present them in that would give a rough overview of the drawing process without overwhelming a total noob? pic not related

Ok, Loomis discussion time.

I get the process through which Loomis wants you to construct a head, but I still struggle with it months after drawing with it.

The biggest and most glaring problem is how much of the sides do you 'cut away' from the sphere you use to construct the head? I've tried various distances and I still can't seem to get it right no matter how hard I try. It feels like I'm banging my head against a brick wall here.

>>
>>2686860
It's not an exact thing. It's just an approximation of the head, and it will vary a bit from person to person. You don't need to shave off very much though usually.
>>
two thirds of the sphere's height or so

of course the real answer is that you should draw lots of skulls and get a feel for how craniums are supposed to look
>>
>>2686860
have you tried looking at... dare I say... Prokos head videos that are based on loomis method? really helped me a lot.

Is Vilpuu a good teacher? Are his classic videos still his best material or is the new stuff he did for new masters academy better?
How are his books?

Why did /ic/ went completely silent about this guy in recent years? I remember a time when he was named regularly.

Depression is anger. And there is a very good chance you will be depressed as an artist.

Has anyone become so angry while painting or drawing you just completely self destructed into a rage of madness?

I have have destroyed 3 intuos pro tablets, 2 laptops and I have thrown out large piles of art work in the past.

How about you guys?

Easily over 3k down the drain. I just shake my head now,but fuck.
>>
fortunately i dont get depressed or angry while drawing. i just like doing it too much. if i dont like a drawing i just put an x next to it an move on.
the only time i ever get depressed is at a regular non art related job.

Hug box thread. post your work and get ONLY POSITIVE FEEDBACK.

Figuring out what an artist is strong is can be useful even to a beginner, and i think on /ic/ this part of a critique is undervalued

You should put it on a big dinner plate and the barrel could be peaking over the edge, you could even make the plate a pink color so you only see a camouflage outline of the gun
