Sorry to hijack the thread anon.

I urge beginner anons to stick to Keys to Drawing and/or Betty's book until one or both are absolutely completed.

The "essential" thing is to be confident at drawing things in front of you and to develop the ability to assess if what you drew is "correct", which is what these books will do to a large degree and teach you how to do it.

Developing your eye, your visual memory and the ease of drawing things in front of you both analytically as well as gesturally should take a lot more precedence than anything else.

You'll have to resist the urge of getting all these books and getting overwhelmed with information from sometimes conflicting viewpoints.

Most of the shit in "Beginner's essential books" isn't beginner at all. You'll struggle to get the most out of these books because they have a lot of wisdom that isn't apparent (or applicable to any real degree) to beginners.

Loomis is advanced beginner. Hogarth is intermediate. Scott Robertson is intermediate. Vilppu is advanced. James Gurney is very advanced. Alla Prima and Problem Solving for Oil Painters shouldn't even be on here.

(PS. Don't use drawabox, seriously. Keys to Drawing is miles and above better.)

How do you practive deliberately when it comes to drawing? I've been trying that but with little success and I dont really know what to do. Someone said that focusing on one thing really hard for 30 min can bring the biggest gains but I am not sure, I will try it though. Any suggestions?

Assuming you are reading a book

1.- Read the lecture while watching the drawings
2.- Understand what the author is telling you read more than once if necessary
3.- Copy the drawing from the book
4.- Do your own attempts
5.- If you don't get it go look references
6.- After you can reasonably do your own, flip the page
>>
>>3096861
when it comes to reading books:
1. do the exercises
2. do it again
3. read on why the exercise is important, what is it trying to demonstrate? what can be achieved using this method over another?
4. do the exercise again.

learning from books is more about understanding why this author uses one method over another, the actual drawing ability of a person doesn't really factor into it.

for streams/videos:
1. follow along, pause the video if necessary
2. draw it again
3. do the same exercise/technique again, but on a different subject, angle, or pose (ie. when learning crosshatching, dont just do trees and arms, diversify your learning)

other than that, just dont listen to music while you do any of these, and just have fun with it. music diverts attention away from your work, depriving you of focus and ruining your learning experience. mood is also important, you become more receptive to information if you are in a good mood as opposed to a bad one.

I like how you broke these down, do you think you can do something similar for

- reviewing and critiquing your own work.

- taking a critique (whether yours or or someone else's) understanding it learning from it and applying it.

hey guys, I bought a wacom intuos art and I started discovering digital drawing using it in Krita software.

I started by reading the One-stop beginners' guide and I drew the upside-down man and here's my result (picture).

Can you give me your feedback about my begginer level of drawing ? and also advise me with a course to learn the techniques to how to draw using the tablet (brushes and tools and not only pencil) ?

Thank you

I feel like my art fundamentals aren't that bad technically but I'm struggling with creating something that isn't every other piece on ArtStation. How would you go about it, /ic/?

you could have shit fundies, if you have that other 50% of what art is then youll create works that have value and meaning
meditate, die to your old self, thats the key
let the universe at large tell you what to paint
>>
>>3100873

i have the opposite problem. I am very creative and if I had just one area of talent to use as an outlet I would be golden. Creativity is mostly the ability to systemize in new ways. Think about a whole world to set your art in or base your art around some unique method (for instance something like turning random squiggles into representative pictures). Think in a multimedia context.
>>
>>3100876
I find that definition of creativity really interesting!
I've always thought of creativity as the ability to let go of systems. I'll definitely going to have a go at new methods and workflows.

Is this why this board is mostly shitposting about 'muh fundies' and less about creative artwork?

Any traditional artists here know what to do with dry pigment, lavendar oil, or liquid palladium? A relative passed away and I got these supplies. I have been painting for a few years, but never used these materials.

Pic related.

You can mix the dry pigment with a medium to make paint. You've got linseed oil there, so you can use that if you want to make oil paint, but you'll need a glass muller and slab, and you'll probably want a mask or respirator because you don't want to be breathing that shit.
>>
Look through naturalpigments articles for information about pigments and media.

Those yellow and white pigments seem like they could be toxic. Possibly lead white, naples yellow (lead antimonate) and lead tin yellow. The earth colors, green earths, and blues should be alright unless there's emerald green in there. The red is likely to be just some type of red earth, but it could be vermillion (mercury sulfide).

I can't identify the lime green pigment, but the other ones seem to be some sort of green earths and maybe a chrome oxide green. Doesn't seem to be verdigris.

Lavender/spike oil is a solvent used similarly as turpentine. Non toxic.

Artists who are serious enough to mull their own paints are just the kind to keep toxic pigments, although they don't seem to have been used much.

You should list what the labels say where available.
>>
>>3099440
I should further add spike oil is quite expensive and should not be used like turpentine for cleaning brushes during and after painting, but can be used for thinning down paint, making a couch, or making a painting medium with linseed oil and maybe a resin.

Are you the artist in OPs pic? Post link to blog.
>>
Is that lolibro?

I think we can all agree that finishing your work is important, but for maximum gains ideally how often should this be done?

Let's say I do a finished drawing and then I realize I need to study up on perspective and faces. These two alone could take months if not years to get good at. Should I study these until I've gotten good at it OR should is it better to set some kind of schedule that goes something like finish a piece every month or every week regardless of whether or not I've been able to overcome the problems or not.

>>
Whenever you think your work deserves to be finished

Really it's up to you. I don't finish every garbage idea I start but I just make new ones, and sometimes I feel like I'm close to striking gold so I make something bigger out of it.

Others may have different approaches to this.
