How do you challenge yourself in drawing? I want to make fast and steady improvements by challenging myself as much as possible, no matter the cost. Pretty much autism at the highest peak.
>>2733813
If you make the challenge too high for your skill level you will not learn a single thing. The trick to make it just a bit more challenging than you are comfortable with, and take baby steps. Repeat enough baby steps and you will have completed a marathon eventually.
>>2733817
Yeah but taking it slowly wont get me anywhere. I get that I cant be doing old masters painting but at the same time i have to improve as much as possible and I wont be able to do that by doing some tumblr tier training stuff.

Actually it will, since your brain will be able to absorb the info better.
Rushing in will only get you frustrated.

Learn the fundamentals. They go a long way.
Buy mexican how to draw books.
I've followed a few mobile workstation threads but they allseem to agree that the current options aren't worth the price yet.
So I want to buy a regular sturdy lightweight laptop to use with my good ol' wacom intuos 4.
Which one would you recommend?
I use it for animation and illustration and I heard 256 storage, 8gb ram and i7 processor are important

Unless you usually paint on a 10000+ resolution canvas with huge ass texture brushes, those specs are way higher than what you need for digital painting. An i5 and 4-6 gb ram are usually more than enough. Also If you have an older version of Photoshop, it won't work on Win10, just be aware of that.
>>2729762
For graphic software you need at more RAM to have enough memory for the history and layers before it begins using the disk as swap space.
For animation you probably want the i7.

This.
Hi there 4chan. I need some advice. I always thought I wanted to draw sexy pinups featuring my oc's or other peoples, and make a living off the porn art industry. But after thinking things over I realise I'm no longer comfortable with that world. I think I'd rather just try to get work as a concept artist or do illustrations for people. Maybe game art for card games or video games as well. I'm thinking of taking a course to improve my art. But after i'm finished studying, what are good ways to get work in these areas?
>>2733051
The easiest way is through connections. If you know people already working in the industry they can recommend you to places, they can tell you of job openings, they can give you the email address of art directors etc.
Otherwise be visible online and ideally interact with the art community too on sites like facebook and artstation. The more visible you are the more likely you are to get work.
Build lists of companies you want to work for and do work that you think fits their style, then send them emails. Keep your eye open for postings about needing artists.
Pro-tip: Unless you are incredibly dedicated and incredibly skilled, you will fail. Just "taking a course to improve your art" won't be enough. It's an extremely competitive market right now and the minimum bar for skill level is constantly rising. Many of the smaller companies that are for artists who are less skilled and experienced don't pay enough to support yourself on.
>>2733083
Yeah I know its a very competitive buissness to get into. I'm hoping after taking this course i can draw well enough to at least make a little money on the side of my regular job. My teachers in the past have told me its best to do the art things as a side job, and artists at conventions i've talked to have told me the same thing.
I do know some people in the art buissness, i'll talk to them once I've finished the course.

What's the course? What does your art look like now?
how does /ic/ feel about tim von rueden?
i like his pencil sketches but im not a huge fan of his digital paintings
I feel you.
A lot of charm is lost from his pencil work.
/ic/ please help me or i will fuck it up really hard.
I need to get back to my regular schedule but i cant.
I had so much stress during past 3 years (family member loss, some health stuff and shit) and this year i barely was drawing because of problems and at the end even got a job where i wasnt paid. So im poor but need to get back to be that "professional" that i was 2 years ago.
BUT I CAN'T! I got a horrible, the worst possible procrastination. I cant handle it.
I can sit for hours and watch every youtube video, or waste time on videogames and find myself that it's 6:00AM while i "started to draw" at 5:00PM.
Freelance artist is my only job and i liked to draw but the problems i had really made me frustrated about art. Every time i sit here, my mind tries to avoid drawing and use any possible way to do that.
I hate this. Im fucking my life up and i want to be that productive artist i was 2 years ago.
What to do?
Anyone had this problem?
Now it takes me 3-4 days to draw something that could take only 1-2 days in the past.

Stop tuning out. Be conscientious.
Habit forming is key. Remember, just two weeks of doing the same thing at the same time and you're set, even if you miss a day or so you can get right back on the horse.
"On the horse" mentality is it. Just catch yourself drifting off course and get back on it.
Personally I've found that setting regular phone alarms and the like keeps the ball rolling even when I have to do shit all day for my job.
Not viewing it as work but as a hobby you're training in, I found that helped too.

I do illustrations for a shop in Japan. It's an indi business ran by one very old man. He prints the designs on articles of clothing and such.
For my recent project, he gave me an image of an illustration from an anime artbook. He told me he wants me to draw his/our original characters in the same pose, on the same couch, and he says he wants some of the articles of clothing to be the same (such as hats).
How legal is this? I am trying to change the angle a little bit, plus the style of couch to be different.
Can you get in trouble for taking someone else's pose/clothing design and applying it to your own characters? Especially if you are selling said drawing on things?

you really think /ic/ is the best place to come for advice on japanese copyright laws?
>>2732075

>>2732075
You can only if you get caught.
Example: Most Japanese artists
We as artists don't really care though unless we make much money, so it's okay most of the time.
Anyone got some e-books for graphite drawing ? much appretiated
Something like this myb...

EDIT: I mean charcoal drawing..
Thnx, i am really struggling to find some "tutorials" for portrait drawing
>>2731710
You don't need a book on drawing in charcoal specifically.
You'll see more progress in drawing self portraits from life than you will in drawing from books mainly.
What I'd recommend is to do a lot of self portraits, identify common problems and then consult various authors for their approaches on those problem areas.
So if, say, I was having trouble with noses I'd do some studies of noses from Bridgman, Loomis, Hogarth, Vilppu, Bammes, etc. and then try again from life.
Ron Lemen has some DVDs on the subject which could be found on cgpeers and elsewhere on the internet.
Nathan Fowkes will be releasing a book soon which will almost certainly be excellent.
https://www.amazon.com/Draw-Portraits-Charcoal-Nathan-Fowkes/dp/1624650317/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478227810&sr=8-1&keywords=nathan+fowkes
I really want to stress though that there is no substitute for life drawing. I'm not saying flat images are the devil but you need to draw from life also.
I got accepted into a gallery and for the first show I have 4 paintings in it, one in the window display. I'll get to display new work there every month. Yay.

Bought this kit a couple of weeks ago, perfect for a beginner I'd say.

looks cool
Hiya! I have a question for people who are really good at drawing.
How big a line would you draw with your shoulder on overhand pencil holding on? How big would you draw your using wrist using the writing pencil on? I was recently told to start drawing with shoulder and overhand holding technique, but I always want to just use my wrist with my writing hold.
So if you could, on my image I made, show me how big on an A4 sheet of paper you'd drawing your smallest overhand shoulder line, and your biggest wrist line, it would help me to see how where about I should be doing things.
>>2733179
I don't use the overhand grip very often for sketchbook things like that. That type of grip and drawing from the shoulder is best suited for doing larger work on a vertical surface, for example an 18x24" pad of newsprint clipped to a board and put on an easel.
There's no real answer on what line uses what technique. In general I guess the longer more gestural lines will be done more from the elbow and shoulder, and small details are more fingers and wrist, but there are exceptions to this. Each person has different preferences and different drawing styles. Something like a fine hatching basically needs to be done from the wrist though.
Just draw and don't think about it too much. After filling a sketchbook or two you will know what works for you personally.
