how much time do i have to spend on studies to get the most out of them? How do you learn efficiently?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Just balance it out, you learn different things from doing quick studies than long studies. If you are just starting out don't feel bad about spending a lot of time on something simple! Just try to be as thoughtful as you can.
Let's say you are doing basic proportion studies, measure them until they are right, this might take either 10 minutes or an hour, but you learned from it.

To me the most efficient is to do a bunch of quick studies and a few rendered ones. Also drawing from imagination and using references to make it as good as possible helps!
>>
Time is irrelevant, stop thinking about it. Study and do it until you understand. Repeat to turn concscious understanding into subconscious understanding.
>>
>>2745865
It is relevant for some people. I may be homeless soon so I want to learn as much as possible

I just wanna know what are the settled fundamentals for drawing large/giant people. Is their head gonna be the same size of a 6 foot tall person or up to how tall should I know to up the size of the head? Should a 9 foot person be 12 heads tall or 9 heads?

They would still be 8 heads tall, but the head would go up in size to compensate. Pic related

I remember reading somewhere that making a character 10-15~ heads tall gives them that massive illusion, I wonder how true this is though and up to what limit?

Could you use an extra $400-$600 a month? I know I could, nigga.

I'm a shitty artist looking for a marginally less shitty artist to help me realize a game project in both a timely manner and in a quality I otherwise could never achieve on my own. Character designs, splash art, animation frame tie-downs and cleanup, effects, environments et cetera. Nothing's off the table, G.

Send me your portfolios, your hourly rates, examples and estimates; let's do business.

I want someone who's motivated, versatile, willing to learn and is of course able to set aside time each week to help me push my ill-conceived project forward. I don't care what your rate is, but considering my own limited resources, I'm naturally going to gravitate towards whoever can get me the best work at the biggest volume relative to what I'm able to spend. The last thread yielded quite a few solid offers, but it also may not have been straightforward enough so we're trying again with more of the cards face-up.

I'm looking for a weeb/'toon' aesthetic. If you have an animation-friendly style already I'll definitely take a close look at you, but even if you've never animated or drawn a cartoon in your life I'm willing to give you a shot if you're willing to try.

Look at Shane Glines, Bruce Timm, Alex Ahad, XA-XA-XA, and Chris Battle over the next week or two, put some topical OC in your portfolio and hit me up.

Just to clarify, are you planning to hire only 1 artist with your budget, who can do all of those things?

I'm just putting what needs to be done out there.

While I have no delusions about being able to get everything from one person, I do want to get as much out of someone as I can before they need a break or are otherwise tapped out. Unfortunately I can only afford to pay for one artist at a time.

While I'm looking primarily for a character artist and designer at this time, versatility is a definite plus because it makes my job a hell of a lot easier..

>I literally deleted the paragraph where I said as much shortly before posting and didn't even realize it hours later

As I said I'm looking for a anime/'toon' aesthetic and to...

>Look at Shane Glines, Bruce Timm, Alex Ahad, XA-XA-XA, and Chris Battle

...for examples of what I mean. These are just examples though, if you already have a lot of work done in an animation-friendly style that's great, but not required. As long as you can pull something to that effect off without having a ton of similar work already done.

I'll be offering a paid art test to some of my top picks-just send in your portfolios, folks.

So I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to drawing and I'm going through the sticky but I'm confused. As I think I understand it symbol drawing refers to using iconic ideas to represent things (a sun simply being a circle with rays shining out, a cat being a circle with some triangle ears and nubs for feet and tail) rather than drawing them as they are or rather how you perceive them as, is this correct?

So if for example I did the exercise where you copy the picasso portrait from an upside down reference and rightside up it is recognizable bit perhaps not a perfect recreation would that mean I am not symbol drawing?

I just want a way to determine if I'm guilty of symbol drawing or not.

>>
>>2745609
The Picasso exercise is just a start, so you can understand what observational drawing feels like.
Just because you've done that one exercise doesn't necessarily mean you're "cured". If you want to know for sure post portraits, since that's where symbol drawing is most prevalent.

Books like right side of the brain and keys to drawing are good starting points for drawing what you see, but like anything in art that's something you can always improve on. "Symbol drawing" is like the bottom end of the spectrum, where you're not observing at all. I guess photo-realism would represent the other end of the spectrum.
>>
>>2745655
Okay but if I'm not drawing anything except the lines that I see would it be safe to say I should continue from that point?
>>
>>2745672
If you're unsure whether you're cured of symbol drawing, you probably aren't.
Lines should be mostly constructional, because there is no black wireframe around real life objects.

Keys to drawing helped me a lot with the theory, from there it's life drawing you should focus on. Life drawing can't substitute construction, gesture and all that jazz (you'll still need to study that), but it forces you to solve the problems of foreshortening, light and shadow, physics etc. that are already solved for you when you're drawing from a photo.

All the skills are linked to one another, as your construction and imagination drawing improves, so does your life drawing and vice versa.
Remember:
>your pencil is a tool to darken parts of the paper, so use it to draw shadows instead of outlining everything.
>trust what you see, forget what your brain tells you something should look like
>squint a lot

With so much apps and books on the subject, what is your tested pro tip regarding routine, /ic?
2 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
To experiment and find out what's best for you because what someone higher skilled than you does in their routine may not suit everybody.

I tried out a colored pencil from an artist's loft beginner bundle I received as a gift and found it enjoyable other than it being a piece of crap that was nearly impossible to sharpen and broke too easily.
anyone who sketches/drafts in color have any recommendations?
The 0.7 pilot ones look nice and have better reviews than the pentel ones

I'm generally a big fan of mechanical for drawing small. Lately I've been forcing myself to draw from the elbow with the pencil at an angle and I've found that is a lot harder to do with mechanical pencils... I've switched back to wood for now.
>>
>>2745314
I almost forgot most of /ic/ hates mechanical pencils, probably won't see much reccs on leads

Nah but I haaate charcoal. Every second my fingers grasp it is sensual hell. And the sound is so ughhhhhhhhhhhhh, I'm cringing just thinking about it.
Too bad I fucking love drawing with it.

I use turpentine and oils

A few years ago I used to "sharpen" my smaller brushes with my mouth/teeth and would often "taste" the turpentine

obviously that's not very healthy as drinking a cup of it would kill you
Its good to have brushes that don't require that anymore
>>
Never disagreed with a thread more
The smells & sounds of paints, inks, markers, charcoal. I love em all (probably too much).

trying to do anatomy study for this chibi/ dwarfy thing.
send help

Why would you do an anatomy study for a "chibi/dwarfy thing"?

Serious question, what do you think you'll learn from this?
>>
How to stretch the rules of anatomy to apply to a wide variety of proportions.
>>
>>2744847

I think you're better of doing studies of chibi figures that you like. Getting a feel for the shapes and proportions. I don't think tracing a anatomical diagram over a chibi figure is going to be all that useful. Some landmarks sure, but a meticulous line ecorche seems a bit over the top unless you're planning to draw some flayed figures. Just my opinion mate. All the mango guys that are good at stylized stuff don't focus on anatomy so much as on shape design and gesture

How do I even begin drawing this in 3d from the viewpoint outlined by the blue lines? How the fuck do I know where to place the vanishing points for the bed and the table?

P.S. Yes - I read "Perspective Made Easy" - in the trash it goes. The only chapter I wanted (where to place VPs) didn't explain shit.

I managed to scrounge up this from some book that actually should have been recommended, but I don't get it.
>>
>>2744507
Don't worry about perspective too much when not too many lines are involved. Just go into a room like this and draw it as you see it. Don't try to start from the mechanical and go to the natural, estimate what you see and the natural until it looks right, then use mechanical calculations to double check.

If you get seriously anal about mechanicanical exactness you are going to end up putting a small drawing on a wall and measuring out to a point far away to try to match the actual perspective points, I don't really recommend this.

I think autism is the way to do it for me - I am never going to be a great artist, I don't have / am unwilling to put in the time, but I want to be passable, and understanding the "geometry" (for lack of a better word - the autistic way essentially) seems like the best way to be passable (for myself).

I've been using store brand student paint for a couple months now and i want to upgrade a bit to something that isn't go fuck yourself expensive. Something in the 5-10 dollars a tube range. The same pretty much goes for brushes and paper as well. Hoping some of you guys have some experience in this department

Eh, cotman or grumbzcher i guess. There's no middle paper, iirc pretty much goes strathmore/canson watercolor pad -> arches.

Just save up a couple hundred and buy windsor newtons. Mid-tier is a waste of money.
