I've been drawing in Adobe Elements 8 for at least a year now, and while it's been good to me I believe it's time to move on up. I have experience in CS5 and CS6, as well as some in SAI. Anyone got any good recommendations?

How do I strike a good balance between form and strict observation?

I keep dancing between the two, and it's really distracting me, so I can't really put all of my mental energy into one or the other.

Is the best thing to do is to do it once from observation, and then mentally wrap your brain around what you've drawn?

Is this just a matter of observational mileage?
>>
Sometimes I end up putting form before observation just to make a more cohesive drawing or painting. Before that I used to obsess about angles and negative spaces, Now I still take them into consideration but form and readability are more important for me
>>
>>2748103
I've never heard of readability before.
What is that?

How do you force yourself to draw? I get tired after few hours of watching video lessons with occasional sketches. It is not enough for my improvement, I need to do at least as twice work as I do now, how do I force myself? Can't drink coffee btw.

It's hard to force it drawing. What works best for me is removing distractions if I'm not drawing In photoshop.

Start with just stupid doodles or what ever. You're not warmed up yet. Doodles are fun, which is important. If you're enjoying it start putting studies onto the page. Then Just keeping going. Work on your weak points.

Biggest thing is being able to enjoy what you're doing which is why playing a game is easier than drawing. Instant gratification.

block your access to distractions. if you're lazy, use that to your advantage and make it slightly difficult/time consuming to get your distractions back. there's an extension for chrome for example called StayedFocused that has a nuclear option where it will block every website for 24 hours, and there's no way to undo it once it's done.

If you have to ask, you aren't going to make it.
>>
>>2748914
I am asking because I mainly want to draw from imagination and not from life.

Plus the drawings of the author all look wobbly which makes me doubtful.
>>
You do not have to read it. Just do some of the bargue course.

>>2748918
>want to draw from imagination and not from life.
Putting the cart before the horse. You will eventually come to learn that all the best artists at drawing from imagination, KJG for example, spent lots of time life drawing and still at the very least spend lots of time observing life to build a visual library. It's a necessary step.

Sup /ic/,

Not sure if this is a post for /tg/ but I was hoping someone could please tell me some good tutorial on how to paint miniatures for beginners?

I was thinking of ordering this:

http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop/index.php/painting-videos-dvds/dark-sword-masterworks-miniature-painting-with-jen-haley-and-anne-foerster-3-dvd-set.html

Thanks in advance.

It's TG, most of /ic/ would be rather not sculpt at all if they had to paint it.

Their uh, magazine or whatever goes into great detail. Blue Dwarf or something? 40+ years of accumulated tutorials, you'll find your pizzaz.

Ok, thanks. I'll take it to /tg/

Ow the Edge

Looks cool tough

I am not an artist and not good at drawing so I don't know:

Is a good artist able to make unique faces from scratch? I look at paintings from the masters and to my untrained eye it looks like every artist uses the same type of idealized face unless they painted someone from life. In video games characters are either 3D scanned real models or heavily inspired by real people or they look very generic.

So where is all the art with unqiue looking people? Am I not looking hard enough?

>>
>>2749583
That is because people draw symmetrical, perfect faces. Real faces aren't symmetrical at all and to make an original, real face is either hard or just not desirable. The best option is to take someone from life and change it a bit so you know it's done correctly but at the same time it is not just a copy.

So, I stopped taking art classes in college because they were filled with insecure, pompous dickheads. I decided that perhaps not all artists are like that, and then I came here, to be disproven a hundred times over by the dipshittery that takes place in an average thread. Ostensibly this is a board for art critique but there's not really a great deal of constructive criticism that happens here and people are just as mean-spirited and insecure and hungry for validation that their art doesn't suck while putting down other people at the same time.

Is this a running theme? Are visual artists in general just terrible people with their heads firmly up their own ass? Are there cool artists out there?

>>
If you don't know the reason now, you will never will because you're too much of a dumb ass to think about it deeply enough. Artists get the short end of the stick every single time and they can't do much about it because to prove anything requires a decade and even when they do prove something, it can easily be ignored. Luckily, not everyone is bad to artists such as your fans.
>>
>>2749312
>Muh poor starving persecuted tortured artist meme

Bullshit. Trying hard at something doesn't mean you get to be an asshole to other artists who are also working hard. Musicians aren't as pretentious as visual artists about what they do even if they're good at it.
>>
OP, it's not very obvious at first, but if you think about it for a minute it starts to make sense.
At any given time, most artists who are actually worth anything or are ever gonna be worth anything are busy working their asses off. That means that they're probably not all gonna be posting 4chan at the same time, so most of the posters that you'll find at any given time are gonna be predominantly losers and bitter assholes who've given up or never intended to make it in the first place.
That's why it seems like everyone on here is an asshole. Because most artists are actually busy working while most assholes are on here talking shit.
If you stick around, you'll find posters that are actually decent people. However, you have to not be an asshole yourself. As long as you're humble and respectful, you'll find people that act the same way. If your feelings are hurt and you want to leave, that's fine too.

We all started art because it was magic to us.

But the more you learn, the more you realize its a craft and the magic is lost.

How do you deal with this /ic?

It's still magic to me. My ability fluctuates so much I could wake up one day and it's like all the years I've spent learning to draw never happened and the next day be drawing something that seems beyond my experience. I don't know how the fuck this thing works.

I'll start by drawing them like if I was making a animated movie. Just simplistic forms for me to keep going and not over complicated myself.

I also watch old animations and see how they do it and for me it actually helps a lot.
