Hi. Is anyone here passionate about abstract art? I'd appreciate critique on this piece I did. I used paper and 0.7 mm dark graphite.

It's titled City Coast.

Thanks.

I would be careful of an overly masochistic mindset. It isn't any more realistic to be overly hard on yourself than overly easy on yourself.

A few things: try to be more concise with your linework; it's okay if you have to slow down. Many times pieces that look as though they were done very quickly were actually executed in a very controlled manner. Even on exercises that are timed I think you'll find that if you slow down and try to become more efficient, that efficiency will make you faster in the long run.

"If you, who draw, desire to study well and to good purpose, always go slowly to work in your drawing; and discriminate in. the lights, which have the highest degree of brightness, and to what extent and likewise in the shadows, which are those that are darker than the others and in what way they intermingle; then their masses and the relative proportions of one to the other. And note in their outlines, which way they tend; and which part of the lines is curved to one side or the other, and where they are more or less conspicuous and consequently broad or fine; and finally, that your light and shade blend without strokes and borders [but] looking like smoke. And when you have thus schooled your hand and your judgment by such diligence, you will acquire rapidity before you are aware." - Leonardo da Vinci

http://www.erikgist.com/ErikGist_WattsAtelierFigureTutorial.pdf

^reading that will be pretty instructive

Remember to draw from life. Try to find a figure drawing session in your area and attend as regularly as possible. It can be easy, especially for a beginner, to misinterpret information from a photograph or from another artist's work. There really is no substitute for drawing from life; that being said there are some things it won't teach you(certain anatomical details, complicated perspective techniques, etc.).

Look up the acromion process and learn how the deltoid wraps around it; reread that da Vinci quote after you've read the Gist booklet.

also expose the side of your pencil so that you can lay down broad areas of tone and use a greater variety of lineweight

Planning to start with Robertson's book this week and grind it

He recommends getting ellipse guides, equal space divider and all that stuff to do the assignments. Do I really need those? I mean I'm planning to move onto digital once I get the basics down, and I am going to do all of those traditionally, but I don't see a point getting those expensive materials to make the perfect grids/circles. Can't I just use a ruler and eyeball it? Also if anyone has tips for getting started/things that helped them while working through that book that would be nice. Thank you.

It honestly depends on what your goal is and what you want to achieve by "grinding" through this book. So before I waste my time making recommendations: What is your end goal and what do you hope to achieve by working through Robertson's "How to Draw"?
>>
>>2893950
Well my work is currently flat as fuck, and as of now I know basic perspective rules but not how to apply them. I'm hoping to get a better understanding of forms, how to draw things from many angles easily, while making them look 3D.

My end goal is drawing figures well - which is why the next book I'm going to be doing is figure-focused (Loomis/Hampton/Vilppu etc). But first I need to understand form.
>>
The book is overrated imo and doesnt explain things well. Its superficial.

I'm looking to buy a tablet to get into digital art, but don't want to drop too much money into my first one.

Been hearing a bit about Huion lately, and someone on here got recommended a good budget one a while back, but I didn't write it down so can't remember.

So what's /ic/'s recommendation in general? Which tablets are popular here? Also, anyone got Huion and if so, is it any good?

No one with Huion tablet?
>>
Hello drawfriend

Seriously, ANY cheap tablet will be a good starting point. The cheapest Wacom Intuos will do it perfecly for you.
I say that because even the cheapest tablets have a nice range of pressure levels. Although their low resolution might not be good for a smooth lineart, most artists use an stabilizer for that

How hard is it to become an artist at an animation studio, specifically Dreamworks TV? It looks like they're creating a ton of new shows there.

What kind of training do you need, and to what level does your art need to be at? I want to know if it's a realistic objective to aim at work at Dreamworks. Is it like astronaut training where there are thousands of applicants with only a few being admitted, and even fewer going up into space?

>>
>>2890529
Not as hard as you think it is.

People think it's impossible or nearly impossible to even become an artist. That's good, because that weeds out a ton of people from ever becoming artists. Now you just deal with the people who want to become artists which is a significantly small number in comparison to every other industry. Now of those artists who want to actually work for Dreamworks is even slimmer. Now this is a good thing and a bad thing, because it means you have to be really good or show potential. There's the internship program way to get in or you know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy. Basically it comes down to, you have to be able to do professional level work similar to that of what they're currently able to do. It's actually quite simple and applies to everything. If you can do the same level of work as the thing you want to work for, you probably can work for them.

How about we do a poem critique thread, you judge mine and/or share yours for others to judge. Be as hard hitting as you like.

'That Uncertain Affection':

Alone with my thoughts,
I'm drawn back to you,
To passion, confusion,
And fear of what's new,

These truths we do tell,
Of how we now feel,
Escaping that shell,
I've found something real,

And that's all that matters,
Not judgement nor doubt,
Old boundaries are shattered,
Yet remain does the cloud,

This fog that has plagued me,
It's hopelessly thick,
But I'll ignore it, and love thee,
Life was never a picnic

You'll have more luck on >>>/lit/

That being said your poem is so bad I'm wondering if it's some kind of troll. I'll give my opinion anyways.

It's ridiculously literal, without nuance or subtlety. I prefer something in which I can get lost, eg. approach the subject less directly, maybe combining multiple metaphors / parabolas. Suggest to the reader, and let real meaning form itself in their minds. You can still get to the literal emotional heart you want to express, but not so flatly and immediately.

You shouldn't use an extremely short meter like that, it's the most difficult to write in. Basically consider that each line of verse should be interesting in itself, so start with longer meters.

Use a thesaurus.

That "thee" at the end is like the cherry on the shit cake. If you're going to write in a period style, do so consistently. The thee/picnic contrast is pretty hilarious.

First time doing abstract. any help or tips I can get?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
What were you going for exactly? Abstract art is hard. You have to make it pleasing to the eye without particular concrete forms and yet it has to not be too somple.
>>
learn what composition is
every little shape and element of your picture is separate from one another, there's really no unity in the piece, go overlap your shapes and have the elements play with each other, make it interesting
>>
Abstract art works only when you look at it and imagine rubbing your dick through and if it feels nice it's good. When I look at your peice I feel like it will scrape my dcik out and I just want to leave at that point you know?

As long as it doesnt smudge once dry whats the problem with anything? If you're going to put it into PS or Gimp to color anyways?

I just figured I'd need something that would draw lines good enough to be recognized by the program and to hold in colors with the "paint bucket" feature

Right there with you.

Trying to "render" something through colouring and it's just not working out in the slightest.
Things seem to look okay with lines but as soon as I remove the linework it's a blob of colours, shape entirely gone.
I feel like I spend more time fiddling with the hardness of brushes than I do with actual colouring.
>>
>>2895612
I was thinking about making a same thread. Someone please oh please tell me how you do it.

After three years of working with ink and graphite I got unironically good at most of the fundies, but the perfectionism just doesn't let me finish anything - as soon as I open a digital canvas, my mind goes blank and I scrap everything after the sketch phase.

I envy the weeaboo and furry autists flooding deviantArt with finished works. Even if it's garbage, at least they have something to show for their effort.
