I understand the value of drawing from life. But would a cartoonist/illustrator really need to practice atelier-style realism?

It seems like most animators who take figure drawing try to capture quick poses and motion. So even they aren't getting into the nitty-gritty details with every piece.

Can any illustrators share their thoughts on detailed realism? Is it really necessary to practice if I'd rather create non-realistic work?

Also here's an example from Proko's realist drawing work.

Clearly he's adept at realism. But we also know his kangaroo speaks volumes on his imaginative illustration skills.

Is detailed realism just a meme?

One more example to show what I mean.

Why would an (aspiring) illustrator spend this much time rendering all those little muscles? Why would an illustrator even bother measuring so precisely to get drawings like this pic? Does that really help develop anything valuable for cartoons/illustration/storyboarding?

So, I went out and got myself a tablet finally. Told the sweet looking chubby chick at the best buy that my art skill was only "hang" on the fridge level and I just needed a tablet good enough for doodles. After she told me she didn't work there (who the fuck goes to best buy in a blue shirt?) I found the drawing tablets and choose the cheapest of the only brand they had; Wacom Intuos Draw ($80).
It came with ArtRage lite or something, didn't like it. I downloaded Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and wasn't about to subscribe to that shit so I bought Mischief and...it's pretty amaze-balls. So the tablet works great, drawing program is on point and I bookmarked the reference sites I spotted in the sticky.
But then, I started watching some porn and jerked off. After that I went to Taco Bell. When I got back home I ended up playing some Paladins on Steam. I eventually pulled myself out of the blackhole and started sketching but while I was looking at my references I ended up looking up porn again after looking through /b/ for some more references. I didn't even beat off, I literally just watched porn, trying to wrap my head around drawing those kind of curves and how cool tight skin looks oiled up.
So, I bought a tablet to look at porn and pretend I'm not a pervert, I think...
Anyone else out of their depths when trying to improve?

Why would you ask any employee anything at Best Buy? None of them are competent and treat the store as their eternal high school.
>>

you don't want to get good, you're only interested in the idea of getting good - don't be ashamed, a lot of people who come to /ic/ are the exact same way

maybe if you're lucky you can resell it for full price -$10 on craigslist or something

You're really sad. I'm going to make sure to distance myself from you so I don't become like you.

Not civilization, but patreons. The average person never saw those paintings.

Those works only exists because kings and the church sustained the artists.

Who here has read Art and Fear?
What was your opinion of it?
I finished it like a month ago and felt disappointed.
You can tell it was written by two different people with totally different voices.
One author was straight to the point and understood the struggles artists go through and addresses those struggles well, the other was a pretentious name dropper more interested in showing off his knowledge of obscure art history than trying to provide useful information to the reader.
It pissed me off because to me it felt that the latter dominated the book than the former.
I didn't want to read some smarmy art school faggot randomly drop quotes from a host of literally-who's that add nothing to subject at hand.
But that's what I got.
There some insightful stuff in the book but it gets drown out by the uppity stuffy author.

Can you drop the insightful stuff here so I don't have to read it then?

Right, It didn't feel like it was aimed at artist in the painting and drawing spectrum of "art".
Not surprising being both authors are photographers.

A very small OC that I designed, of the Watchdog species found in Wander Over Yonder. I like her a lot so far. Thoughts? Improvement suggestions?

That's the thing with watchdogs! There's so many of them, there's really endless possibilities. It's not a genderbent Peepers, just a female of the same species.

Cute, I like it. Enjoyed WOY myself when it was on, helped me through depression too.

She's got good geometry and shape. Colors stick to the canonical watchdog uniform and looks like she can blend in with others, very good. Personally wouldn't add blush but isn't bad. Hand on hip looks like it's cupped and awkward, use references to help you. Colors escape lines but it doesn't look like a 4 year old did it. Would recommend filling in colors so that pencil/crayon doesn't make pre-sketch indents (my autist eyes noticed the oval you drew to make the torso).

Overall, simple and good. Can use tidying, but off to good start.

Try thinking in volumes instead of lines.

Check sketches of Disney characters, and notice how they're basically all a pile of balls.
You'll automatically better understand this as you grow older though.

I work full time and need more money
How much money will drawing furry bara get me?
Now how much will it earn me if I'm actually good?
What if I remove all restrictions and draw ANYTHING they want so long as they keep the transaction private through email?
I'm serious.

If you don't like furry, it's pointless to do.

If you were actually good, you would set your own prices.

You wouldn't do that anon, you're too much of a bitch to even do that. Just look at you making your own thread and being all desperate.

You're not serious, just in a down phase.
>>
if you're truly desperate for more money and see only furry commissions as a viable route, I hope you're okay with drawing progressively fucked up shit for an audience you don't seem to be wholly interested in.

Maybe try to get a raise or a better job? How much do you need the money?

Good. I've been painting and drawing my whole life, was raised by an artist mother who encouraged us to always be doing art. Once I hit high school, I got into the advanced class, where we worked on our own. It was pretty cool. We could do pretty much anything we wanted, as long as we brought in the materials. I wanted to do oil, because I had a full set thanks to my mom, but the school said no, water based only.

I always loved the week portfolios would be on the wall, and the try hard's stuff was up. This one girl, who thought she was the most talented artist ever, who'd sneer at the stuff we were working on, put up sheets of papers with (not kidding) clowns and balloons and kittens on them. Needless to say, she didn't get a scholarship, or even into any art programs.

Is there any value to art without any sort of technique or training?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No
Golden number bullshit is fake too
>>
>>2950723
Yes if you mean art that purposefully rejects already learned technique or training. Art is contextual and usually a commentary on the societal aspects of a particular period of time. This commentary can be enhanced or simply changed by the techniques and traditions used by the artist or lack thereof.
No if the artist legitimately doesn't know how to do shit. (There are still some exceptions to this but that stuff is allowed for very specific circumstances and situations.)

Keep in mind that Basqiat was trained as an artist and knew more about drawing and painting than anyone on /ic/. Picasso too was someone who got a lot of shit from idiots who only saw the cubist stuff and assumed he couldnt hack it as a realist. Picasso could draw and paint like an angel.

Moral of the story. Go back to life drawing. Your style shit aint gonna cut it,.

>>2950723
yes, it's an unregulated market so you can make a mint, now that's value $$$$$

http://takiminada.deviantart.com/

So, this artist is like my biggest idol ever. I love everything about her work from her anatomy to values to color. I've been grinding hardcore for the past 2 years to reach her level and i'm still not even close? What gives? I practice the same stuff that she does? Are some artists simply unreachable due to uncontrollable factors like talent?

Definitely not. The person you've linked isn't particularly talented, fairly average compared to the artists out there.

It's about how you practice and apply yourself.
