This is how it all started for me. After a long and serious relationship ended I went into a deep depression. I found myself living alone at 22 years of age. My family had their problems and so I would see them off and on for periods of weeks or days. One night that my mother was staying with me she brought home a small canvas, some colors and a couple brushes. From that moment one I dedicated myself to painting. I knew nothing about it and now over a year later I am painting portraits of woman. Each painting seems to be closer to hyper-realism than the last. I try to capture the beauty of women. I don't want to get into excuses of how I feel when I am painting or the subject matter. Anyways, now that I have been able to paint better than ever before and have several drawings that came out excellent as I do studies before each painting I find myself having a terrible art block. It just doesn't feel the same and I don't feel like doing it at all. I dream and think about it but can't quite get back into it. I lose motivation and judge myself too harshly to progress into a drawing let alone a painting. This is also a difficult period for me as I have basically 0 friends and moved to a new town to live next to a person that left me shortly afterward. Does anyone understand me or have any advice? Has anyone been through strong depression and art blocks? General art block threat then..

>Has anyone been through strong depression and art blocks?

Every artist ever. Take a break. A short one, but a serious one. No drawing/painting/sketching or doing anything art related for ... say 2 weeks. That should help. It won't solve any problems but will clear your system of some anxiety that creeps up on you when holding a brush.

sorry about that anon. whenever i'm in an artblock i try to ease myself into painting again, and it'll flow as naturally as before. works different for everyone, but maybe you could take a break & travel or something like that, just to return with a fresh mind. figure out which direction you want to take your art in etc. good luck & hang in there!

Diagnosed Major Depressive Disorder here. I've taken lots of meds, done lots of therapy, and gone to support groups where I talked to a lot of people with similar issues. Loosing interest in things you once enjoyed is a symptom of depression, but you really didn't provide enough info for me to perform an armchair diagnosis.

Different people respond positively to different things, and without knowing more about you I'm hesitant to offer specific advice. Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are two things you can look into and try to apply to your life from your own home. Meditation has helped me to learn what sets me down into a dark spiral, and there are a lot of guided breathing meditations on YouTube.

Worth it to buy? It's $18 on Amazon right now. Or is there a better book out there?

it's good, it actually teaches quite more than just drapery too.

I'll say michael massen's book is better, it's really very scientific, boring to read and the examples aren't exciting that makes you want to draw but the principals he teaches is very solid and you can learn to analyze and design how a fold works and know why and how these folds happen that makes up the usual 7 types of folds that most others teach. but it's still very boring to read.
>>
>>2375028
This was one of my favourite books when I was starting out. It's very modest in how it presents itself, but it teaches figure drawing and drapery very clearly.

Couldn't find a similar thread, so brushes thread?
Just to make it more interesting, could you elaborate on WHY you like the brushes, and where you got them from?

hah I'm not sure if it's common or not but I use this exact brush set. Short of a few instances I've never needed anything more. Frankly a hard round with dual brush gets the job done every time. Also the cloud brushes in this set are super helpful.

Dump your muscular men and women. Doesn't matter whether it's irl, comics, anime/manga or 3d.

Post your current/recent studies from existing references.

Value/color/figure/composition/line anything goes as long as you post the reference used with the study as well.

never understood the point of copying like this. youre not learning anything besides how to copy that presise style on these precise paintings. if youre interested in actually learning, do a normal still life and try to actually innovate and think through what youre doing

or adapt this style and do your own painting with it. use it as a refernce, but straight out copying these doesnt serve much i think.

i think youre achieveing very little by these.

Anyone have a good source for cheap sketchbooks? I can get 100 page unruled, spiral bound sketchbooks locally for $3.50 USD which is around the same price as the cheapest I could find on eBay (with free shipping.)

Got any cheaper sources? I'm slightly autismo and I'm tempted to buy out the local supply so I'll only ever use the same brand but if I can get a great deal then I'll stock up

Alright, maybe someone can shed some light on this shit for me. Recently wandered out of the arts section and ended up by a bunch of texts on nuclear physics, organic chemistry and Munsells colour reference guide, The Big Book Of Colour.

I've recently started using the Munsell system for referring to colours, and mixing my pigments and am blown away by how easy this shit is to use for design. For those who don't know, here are a few examples 5R 3/4, 5Y 9/20, 10PB 2/26, N3.

The formula is (Hue slice) (Value)/(Chroma). Where this system differentiates from RGB and co is that it understands that the colour space is not symmetrical (look at the slice for 5Y compared to 10PB, 5Y has high chromatic light values while 10PB has high chromatic low values). I'm digging this shit for design work and palette generation because a 5 value of any slice will be exactly the goddamn same. If I have a 10R 5/10 beside a 10PB 5/10 I know that the amount of chroma between the two colours will be the same and all that's contrasting is the pure hue. If I need to lighten something, I can wrangle around the value numbers and know exactly how much of a difference I am getting! Need a neutralized triad? 10RP 5/4, 10Y 5/4, 5B 5/4. Need to have a bit more chroma? 10RP 5/6, 10Y 5/6, 5B 5/6.

Why the fuck are we using a uniform space for colour reference that holds no value for design and creation? I mean I get the practical nature of storing 8bits per channel info, information theory and all that. but that's useful for information storage, not working with it. But is there any similar method to working with HSV / RGB sliders?

Moreso, can I get a Munsell colour picker for photoshop and shit?

uh, photoshop, everyone works with sliders, and its 16bit, adobe rgb, or lab if your monitor can go the distance.

Do you prefer realism or surrealism? Why? Do you think one takes more skill than the other? Why or why not?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Surrealism takes creativity
Realism takes skill
Photorealism is a waste of time
>>
>>2373202

generally, and this goes toward all art, if i look at it, and cant tell what the fuck im looking at i dont like it.

if i look at art and i, as someone whose skills suck all kinds of dick think i could legitimately do equal or better work, i don't like it.

what i apreciate in art is skill, not a story or a message, raw fucking skill, now if that skill is pushing a message or a story, all the better.

there are some exceptions with needing to know what the fuck i'm looking at, and also some exceptions to skill, but by and large they are the rules.

it's what i have a disdain for modern art, conceptual art and the like, while even heavily commercial art i can enjoy.

as for >>2374467 photo real isn't a waste of time, but copying a photograph perfectly is, well... at least small scale copying a photograph is.
>>
I remember the last time I went to our states modern museum. They have a room for surrealism, and I felt like I needed to shake a layer of dust off my shoulders. Surrealism has had its time. Dalí was a really talented painter but the motif world of the whole movement is just... After that there was the cubism room, as if things couldn't get worse. The things that stood out in their collection was some Matisse and Klee and a few other things, like the Soviet propaganda posters. But my point is, surrealism really is dead and I feel like there isn't much point in discussing it anymore.

Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/4YDuzW77 (needs updated)

last one reached bump limit so here's my question

can someone help me out with photoshop brushes? how do you guys organize your brushes? i've downloaded multiple brush packs by good artists that were recommended here, but all of them were like 200+ brushes with loads of stamps etc.

that would not be a problem, because i'd try them all, but i cant find an effective way to organize them in ps. you just move them to the top of the brush list? or go through and delete what you dont need? is there maybe a way to create brush folders or something like that?

also i saw the ctrpaint custom brush curse, and it states that you should stick to makeing your brushes on your own for the tasks you need to get done, but i think it would be nice to have some premade ones too.

No matter how much I practice trying to draw faces, with pencil, it always turns out like shit, and I draw as light as possible, and I am long passed that symbol drawing shit.

My features always look like shit, and even worse, I can't even get the jaw to look right, one side is always curved differently than the other. What the hell can I do? Practice is useless if I keep doing the same fuckups.

Draw yourself in the mirror to failure. Multiple angles. H lead pencil. Try not to erase; put down confident lines and ghost them to find the right placement.

And don't forget that all those soft features lie on a solid foundation that is the skull.

post your work
>>
Nobody can tell you much if you refuse to post examples.

If you're already aware of what you're doing wrong, try to practice those factors in isolation. If your feature placement is fine, do some studies of just the features. Draw a bunch of simple heads and work on the jaws, etc. Do a full portrait on occasion to apply it all at once though.
