do you think you can get better at art from simply going into it head first without knowing what you're doing, or go in with some experience on the things you want to do?

Well think of it like this
>Want to get into designing and building cars
>don't have a clue about anything or bother trying to learn from sources of knowledge
>okay now I've got to build a wheel
>spend 10 years discovering how to build a wheel
>okay now I've invented the wheel time to move onto the car door
>spend 20 years inventing the car door
>okay great now I've got to-
>die of old age

The sole purpose of writing things down is so that other people can read them and learn from them so they don't have to spend all the time you spent learning it

How do you make colors in Photoshop? Is using the eyedropper cheating? How else do I get the colors to look like what I'm painting?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.

By painting from life. By getting it wrong over and over over hundreds/thousands of times to train your eye to see color correctly. Just like any artists learning to paint traditionally would do?

You'll never make it.

Practice and experimentation.

Try eyeballing the color and then using the eyedropped tool to check your work. The try eyeballing it again from scratch, knowing what the eyedropper color picked.
It also helps to isolate the color, so you can see the actual shade rather than what it looks like relative to the surrounding colors.

I liek some of her stuff.

How long does it usually take you to finish a piece of work once you get invested in it. Lately, its been taking me an average of 15-20 hrs due to the fact I take long breaks. Even then, I just end up polishing a turd.

minus the breaks: 4-10 hrs

Even polishing turds can be a good practice (for polishing.)
>>
Usually 12 hours. I rarely fully render out imaginative work so i'm basing this more so on studies. I think it could take me 20 hours on an imaginative piece because of the lapse in skill required for me.
>>
Eh..it can take me almost a month. If in really into it can take up to 10 hours or so? But that's just for sketching, painting is what ends up taking years to finish.

can we talk about shoulder health? i'm drawing 6-9 hours a day atm and ontop of all the other health issues what worries me most is the fact that my right shoulder seems to be a bit achy, tender and unstable.

wat do?

i remember back a year ago when i got tendonitis (not carpal thank god, carpal is bad news, tendonitis is quite manageable as it turned out) and somebody shared a set of exercises for your wrist/hand on here, that seemed to help tremendously. cured my tendonitis without me quitting drawing within about a week.

is there a shoulder equivlanet for that? i have 2 20kg dumbells lying around if that matters.

I work in the slaughter side of an industrial beef plant. Most people there have sore hands. Mine are sore all the time except on long breaks. I also have trigger finger at night and in the morning. It's terrifying, tons of people there get carpal tunnel. Scrap one cow head fine. Scrap 1000+ cow heads for 8 hours and it hurts to masturbate.
My advice: Take breaks and put your hand in the warm knife purifier.

How important is being classically trained if you want to be a digital artist professionally? I want to know how far I should take it because my options here in Ontario for classical training are quite good.

The handful of classically/atelier trained digital artists I'm aware of have been quite good (Daarken is the first one that comes to mind). I think there's something to it and I'm following suit and have just begun attending an Atelier myself.
>>
>>2419437
Being able to draw and paint well in hand would give you tools that set you apart from the average digital artist from what I see but there are other factors like creativity, connections and being good at selling yourself when it comes to landing a job in that profession.

It really depends on what your ambitions are. Since you are asking here perhaps you need to do some reflections on what you are actually burning for as you can't make it far in that industry without the passion. Being in school is no excuse for not already being ahead of the class and working in your spare time on the very things you are studying for and checking visiting the industry and that would let you know already now what skills you need.

The almost constant stream of "I can't dredge up motivation to draw" posts/threads.

If you can't stir up your own structure/motivation then take a class. Honestly if you can't be a self-starter and you can't put together the money to pay someone to give you structure and tell you what to do, professional level art probably isn't for you. There's no magical solution out there. There are resources to give you free learning materials/inspiration/goals, but in the end, it's up to you to use them.

People just flatout ignoring good advise.
Seeing them stagante throught the time is really annoying.

How do you guys price out your work? I'm being inquired about a few original sketches. What questions should I ask myself to come up with a formula on how to charge for my original sketches?

Pic NOT related at all.

Check out other artists pages, see what they charge for different things, compare yourself to them and think for yourself about how much time you are willing to spend vs the product you create

Videos aren't specific to drapery, but rendering. IMO it's a bad habit to try and think "this is how I render drapery" and "this is how I render cars". Light obviously behaves differently with different materials which you should learn but the basics of direct light, highlight, shadow core, cast shadow, and reflected light go a VERY long way and are fundamental to rendering of all objects, regardless of shape or material. Complex forms like drapery is just like the long division of rendering. It takes longer but you're still applying the same fundamental concepts of lighting.
