Inspiration thread anyone?

I feel like people beginning would like to see how much you can improve in a certain amount of time. I know I do.

Show your progress from when you first started.

What is the minimum level of skill art-wise (ergo. excluding design skill) that you need to find a job as a concept artist? Does anyone have any examples or stories about your first job?

alright who here has experience dealing with trying to calibrate one of these fucking things? I recently got a Huion GT 220 (also with the 8192 levels of pressure update) and this fucking thing ALMOST works but the god damn cursor offset is making it unusable. I tried calibrating so many damn times, even trying to purposely mismatch some of the dots to try to counteract the offset but to no avail. How the fuck do you fix the cursor offset? I'd assume a solution for one of the Huion pen displays should work for others. muh googlefu has failed me these past few days

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The original developer of the site has taken a leave for quite a while, originally due to medical reasons. Progress on the site is almost non-existant at this point. You can try contacting him at @LavaFlake or emailing him at [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>Your streak will go back to 0 and you will have to start again. No other penalties.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>There is no week system anymore, instead new users are given "streaks" based on the number of consecutive days you can submit without getting eliminated. (token losses do not reset your streak)

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.
there. kick rocks.

How can I draw like my goddes Hirame-chan?
56 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
>>3061826
First, you have to have to have sex with and then sacrifice a goat to Satan and then you have to molest a little boy, then will you be able to draw like Hirame.
>>
>>3061835
In that order?
>>
>>3061837
The molestation part can go first or last, but all 3 need to be within the time frame of a few months.

It's best to to have sex with and then sacrifice the goat in the same day, preferably during the winter solstice

Perhaps many of you feel the same as me, I make time to practice art and then feel a bit lost. I think for me a big part of that is knowing there are many skills to learn and how much time I should be giving to any one particular skill. Very interested in learning more about how you guys use your time.

If my question doesn't seem clear I'll blog post for a moment: I felt like I haven't been doing my due diligence in head construction, so I've been grinding Loomis for the past 4 days, just drawing heads both from my imagination and with a figurine for help. It's not that I'm getting burnt out, in fact, I feel more confident about drawing heads as the days go by, but I'm left wondering if I should be diversifying my practice more. The areas I personally would most like to improve are figure/gesture, specific anatomy, and perspective. I just haven't really consciously thought about how to budget my time to effectively make gains in all areas.

So that's where you come in: Do you cycle between practices daily, or do you really like to challenge one skill for days or weeks at a time, waiting for some detectable improvement and then jump to the next?

>>
I think it helps to have some sort of semi serious project that you can apply your studies to. It should also give you challenges that force you to "solve problems with what you have learned. Also draw as much as possible from life, and try to get to the point where you can draw moving objects. Books and teachers are fantastic for helping you gain an understanding of the principles,

Personally I'm focusing on perspective and anatomy for the next few months, I draw gestures and quick sketch's in public places, and at home sometimes, then go home and "graft" the muscles and bones over the top.
>>
>>3080396
maybe we could have a feel general where you bitches can put all your 'wah wah art isn't magic' posts together, so the rest of us can do art things undisturbed
>>
>>3080413
All interesting points. /ic/ has implanted in me almost a desperation to focus on gains that I have probably been shunning my creative side. Moving objects would be a real challenge that I should probably embrace. I take my sweet time getting all my proportions right, and I get all flustered if my subject moves.

Grafting muscles as an exercise is also creative. You work on your memory or is it more a chance to study?

I know you guys are all into muh loomis and muh art.

But I know I wont be able to make it in illustration, I still like to draw but I don't think I'll be able to be a master draftmen.

Plus, I was looking at local jobs, and all asked for technical drawing and autocad skills.

So, I want to ask, what's this board opinion on joining a trade school and learning tehnical drawing, some autocad as well?

>>
No, we'll only approve of you if you take up window cleaning or anesthesiology, all other jobs are frowned upon here.
>>
>>3080144
i would research what the job market looks like for someone that knows technical drawing without an engineering or industrial design background. I'm sure you'll pick up things from both..but i'm not sure guy who just does technical drawings is much of a thing anymore. tell me if i'm wrong.

why don't you just learn to photobash? most retards nowadays can't tell the difference and you'll be lining your pockets with patreon bucks easily. all you need are sufficient references to photobash from
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>3080096
People can tell the difference quite easily. Most just don't care. Your picture is a good example of something that wouldn't be achievable by most artists even if they were using photos.
>>
for the same reason I don't care to learn grime art, found object art, abstract expressionism and a hundred other movements. The philosophy doesn't appeal to me, the method doesn't appeal to me and the results don't appeal to me.

I'd rather slave away with archaic methods than piss about with some business ethic that emphasizes quantity and minimizes human expression. The day I let my taste be determined by deadlines and despot art directors I might as well off myself and be done with it.

So what if laymen think it looks cool, sure, go ahead and lick their balls if that's what gets you going in life. Not my thing.

At the end of the day, even in the hands of a skilled artist, photobashing looks sterile. The ugliest, messiest art can make sense in the right situations but sterile art is an inexcusable offense

So can we have a thread discussing the different drawing softwares and their pros and cons?

Been using Gimp then Sai and I'm really wondering why Sai is said to be really good when it seems rather buggy and minimalistic. Planning on testing Krita as well, what are some others and what do you use? Why do you use it?

Clip Studio Paint

Cheap, fast, lots of options.
>>
>>3079671
been tinkering with various open source softwares and here's what I've got so far

>Krita
Krita is probably better than Sai and has a community that's constantly working to improve upon it. I'd use it as the photoshop of my setup, mostly using it for raster sketching, colors, and something that I love doing with the recent update is storyboarding in the animation-mode

>Inkscape
with Krita as your photoshop, this is gonna be your adobe illustrator
when I first read Scott McCloud's book on making comics, he mentioned using Illustrator for lettering, and I don't think there's a thing you can do in Illustrator that can't be done in Inkscape. granted, I'm not completely accustomed to Inkscape because I just started using it, so there's a bit of a learning curve to using this

still, from what I've seen, it's very easy to use once you get the hang of it and it can make doing line art and lettering a thing of beauty

>OpenToonz
I recently got introduced to this and it looks good from what I've seen. will try to talk more about it in the future, but this is basically going to be my go-to for animations after storyboarding in Krita
>>
>>3079714
forgot to mention something here
Krita can apparently import Inkscape files, but I don't think it goes the same for the other way around, so it'd probably go from:
>initial sketch put into Inkscape for inking and letters
>transfer to Krita for colors, shading, etc

and I've heard that Krita's eventually going to have better vectors, but for the time Inkscape is going to be what you want to use

personally, I never really liked GIMP. only time I ever liked using it was because it was easy to organize images with (like PS), but Krita basically has the same thing

Since around March or April of 2015, I became... burnt out. Ever since that time, I became less and less motivated to draw. I wouldn't and still don't draw for a couple of days or weeks until I get a sudden rush of motivation.
Very recently, I tried to join an animation program, thinking the homework and projects given would force me to draw. But I failed the entrance exam.
Ever since I failed, I changed my drawing style from a mix of comic book and anime to Scott Pilgrim-inspired cartoon. I did so because I ran out of time during my test. For a while, it worked: I was drawing almost every day and I had more motivation to draw. I was drawing quickly, and I didn't need to spend huge amounts of time making sure the anatomy was perfect. But now, that motivation is gone.
And now, I'm asking myself this question: why do I draw? It's not fun for me anymore. Every time I tried to make it fun, it works for a small amount of time. Is it normal or am I just not cut for this media?
Even when it's not fun and I have no motivation, I still want to continue. I want to be at the level where I inspire others to draw, where others would say I'm a master at my craft.
When I look at videos about art or tutorials, I always hear how the content creator just drew every day or is always motivated or happy to create another piece. I don't really see videos on how at one point they wanted to quit or they were in a situation like I am.
I still struggle with what I'm struggling with since I've started drawing and it doesn't feel like I'm making progress. Really, whenever I want to draw, it's because I don't care about getting good; I just want to draw because I have an idea and I can't wait to put it on a piece of paper. Whenever that stops, I instantly forget how it feels to just be happy to create something.

TL;DR I'm a faggot who hasn't like drawing for over two years but still wants to git gud. Do I still try or do I quit

Just feel your forms anon and let it flow through your veins. The pumpkin in a tree does fall without feeling its forms first.

Do you honestly think a board full of losers and trolls are going to give you the answer?

maybe your heart's truly not in it and you're better off doing something else with your time, maybe you need to power through this to know what it's like to overcome serious obstacles and truly grow as a person and artist

The shit people present on YouTube videos and blogposts isn't true. Art is difficult, the art world/community is full of frustration, setbacks and impossible expectations. Lots of us are frustrated at times, but, when you're in the grind you tend to forget the irritation you feel working on your weaknesses and only remember the satisfaction as you reach new milestones.

I can literally get angry when I'm working because I never stop going for the longshots, doing exactly what I'm weak as shit at. the difference is that I have lived long enough to know that that zone is the growing zone, so I stay there and don't shy away from it. Wasn't always like that. I actually quit art for years due to burnout at one point. It happens to the best of us. i came back to it stronger when I had more life experience and priorities in check

What concerns me is that you judge your art efforts only in the connection with other people and their opinions, how they'll perceive your art and your capacity. Let me tell you all that's worth absolutely nothing in the long run. One day you'll be an old fart. When you look back on your life, what do you want to have accomplished? do you really want to obsess over the whims of insignificant assholes who mostly just care about what they're told to care about?

The thing that motivates artists through all that frustration is that at the end of the day, it's not about being perceived as a master, or getting some fancy job. They just want to fucking draw.

cheesy as it sounds, fuck all that other noise and follow your own voice, know that you'll look back one day and be able to say at least I did my thing, not someone else's.
>>
Your choice. What would a humane daily drawing habit look like for you?

I've yet to figure out the right mixture of enjoyment and "just do it" too. Sometimes I stop for months because I got too much down a hole of misery and being overly worried.
