Hello /ic/, i wanted to make this thread for a long time. I wrote a wall of text, choosing carefully my words, posted it, but 4chan "thinks it's spam", so i have to rewrite all this shit. fuck whoever designed this retarded system.
So I a an european Art student, and i can't help but noticing how /ic/ and my school have different approaches to Illustration.
/ic/ seems to think technical skill and realism is the only thing one should focus on. In my school (which has a pretty solid reputation), one could say there's a kind of "signature style" that emerged, where nobody really cares about mimicking reality. pic related is a good example (that's a screenprint, btw).
So, i wanted to know what /ic/ thinks of our styles, and why do we never see anything close to it on this board.
Is it because we are hipsters? is it because Americans think about selling their art before anything else and thus tries to copy rather than invent? is it because this place is a circlejerk that doesn't want to discover anything different? I'm really curious to hear your opinion on this.
I will post links to former/current illustration students from this school, with some pics so you may see what i'm talking about.
website of the guy in this pic: http://www.simon-john-thompson.com
http://acacio-ortas.tumblr.com
The reason you generally won't see stuff like that on /ic/ is because it's deviantart-tier shit and most people here want to be better than that.
i can't post a fucking link without 4chan telling me it's spam. I SHITPOSTED FOR FOUR HOURS WITHOUT GETTING THIS MESSAGE ONCE and now that i try to get a constructive discussion going, i can't post even after filing the fucking captcha…
look up "adele verlinden" on google for this one.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?
>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].
What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

this link directs you to see the past submissions of artist without being part of the challenge. sort of like a "passive viewer mode" throught your past life until the point where you grew wings and became a beautiful butterfly..you then died because a toad ate you.

I see we all seem to be enjoying the tribunal? thats always fun haha. remember you need to view the submission before actually being able to vote!
k guys, this is it. when I killed my internet the jews gave me 3 weeks until I had to pay extra fees for the modem, from now on you all have to make the next OP until I come back..I want to not use the internet for like one to two months as a detox, ( I feel its hurting me to be always online) and only loggin on McDonalds to upload and get me some /MLP/ fanfiction plus vote you all of the tribunal of course. , sorry stella its meme time for a while.
KEEP PUSHING GUYS! sorry you slipped fmMood you are still my fave.
Why is this place so negative and pessimist when it comes to an art career?
>>2454373
Because we're all failures, or expect to be...
Or we're discouraging people from entering the industry so that it's easier for us.
>>2454381
cause art school makes you good automatically. I forgot
Anyone sketch girls at the gym? My workplace offers a discount to the Y so I'm thinking of doing it but I don't want to be creepy. I definitely wouldn't think of doing it in the showers or anything, but it's hard because there aren't exactly tables like in the library or a cafe.
Would they just be glad you aren't hitting on them or would they be genuinely upset moreso than in a park? I don't want to draw children or birds.
If you were bold enough you could just ask them
>>2452931
Probably one out of every four or five wouldn't find it weird.
I didn't say they'd be flattered. They just wouldn't find it weird. It's just not something they were expecting. Just hope that they have an appreciation for the practice that artists do. Also OP I hope you're ripped and 10/10 facial aesthetics too.
I'd say the gym is where you go to exercise and not draw, but you could say that about anywhere.
>>2452920
i would be annoyed. why the hell are you drawing instead of working out at the gym? like seriously, get out.
How can I make my digital art seem more painterly? I want the brushstrokes to be visible.
I'm on SAI but experimenting with the brish effects and textures isn't archiving what I want.
Anyone has examples of digital artists that are painterly? dosn't need to be something crazy just digital art with visible brushstrokes.
Mess with settings and brush downloads more. It would be easier to help if you used photoshop or corel or something
Also- what type of painterly do you want to be? You might as well look at classical paintings and look at the original stuff before just straight up studying other digital artists who came to their own stylistic conclusions
tldr- study physically painted work you admire, do studies based off of them / emulate them, then try what you learned on something original
or, y'know, buy some irl paint and skip digital. why force it.
>>2451578
Painterly like pic related
I have to give Corel Painter a try, I've seen people do really mellow stuff with it.
I tried photosho but it was very memory intensive and behaved in unexpected ways
>>2451617
another example.
What makes art "good" /ic/?
I was taught that and all art is subjective and considered to be "good" when the artist portrays his or her intended emotions through a piece. Is this right or wrong?
>>2447769
I think there should be a distinction made between good art and skilled art. Someone who's art is technically great might be stiff and not very good while someone who needs more education might produce something full of life that you want to see more of when they do improve.
Does that make sense?
It is highly subjective.
I'd say it's a mix of fundamental skill, portrayal of the desired mood, and visual appeal. Of course none of these can be quantified and each viewer has a different perception, so you can't objectify what is good art.
I'd say that the piece you posted is bad based on skill, but it no doubt was very meaningful to the painter and it has historic value. Does that make it good? That's up to you to decide.
>>2447769
Someone successfully portraying their emotions doesn't make their emotions compelling or worthwhile. This is the fundamental idea that many contemporary artists are unable to grasp.

what does /ic/ think of pseudo intelligent images?
for me it looks like people who want to catch easy followers that want to feel "alternative and intelligent" by saying "this is so deep so real"...
>>2454301
Asking the question and then answering it in one post. What is this thread for, again?
I mean, if you can sell some prints going with these "alternative and intelligent" ideas, then go for it. Make that money. We all know that the insights offered by this shit are about as deep as "cake tastes good."
>>2454310
>Asking the question and then answering it in one post. What is this thread for, again?
a pseudo intelligent reply, how fitting for the thread!
I honestly couldnt give a shit. It's not the worst thing I've seen drawn and if it gives someone some mild form of entertainment to look at it, by all means. It's not really to my taste but a lot of things exist that I don't care for.
Here's a few sketches I did for my first short erotica novel. This is my first artistic endeavour and I could use a little feedback, i.e. how to be less shiyte

Looks good but is it possible to get it as a high res file instead of real print?
I need ideas as to what to paint. Im at a blank. Ive been wondering here for 6. Hours. Black geso on canvas board. You're my last hope!
>>2453141
Get an apple. Put it in front of you. Paint the put-forth apple.
Grid it up and rip it off.
Sell it for ten times more
Just draw. Draw anything, it doesn't need to be good.
