if Luther didn't want to build a new religion why didn't he just joined orthodox?
>>
>>62102
because he's german and too much of a KC assburger
>>
>>62102

Why the hell do we have like six threads about religion?
Half of them about Luther?
Cant you make you stupid questions in one of them?
>>
>>62102

He didn't have enough test to grow a proper beard, so that would have been awkward.

>Why the hell do we have like six threads about religion?
This is literally the religion board, dude.

>Half of them about Luther?
Luther is the founded of Protestantism, and the contention regarding Protestantism is probably the central debate in Christianity.
>>
>>62177

Sorry, but I am not American.

>>62350

My point stands.
And the fact that my response is the most debated thing in the thread proves it.
>>
>>62139
Because this is a containment board.
>>
>>62350
>This is literally the religion board, dude.
Yeah, it's not like this is a History and Humanities board or anything.
>>
>>62402
Your point doesn't stand because 1) this is literally the religion board and 2) at least half of /lit/ is Christian by now and most of us have come here to discuss the things we used to discuss, among which were Christianity and the religious in general. We're the people who are neither /pol/ nor Reddit.
>>
>>62464
This is the board where people are supposed to discuss religion. Or did you not read the asticky?
>>
this board was born just two days ago but I'm horrified seeing what is already happening
there is an alarming atheophobia on this board, I'm baffled

there are countless religious threads in what is supposed a HISTORY and HUMANITIES board
all the atheist threads gets deleted, ignored or vandalized
what is this discrimination against atheism here?
>>
>>62988
People started believing the fedora meme unironically and turned in religious fundamentalists

Religious studies are humanities. Go back to tumblr if you want an atheist circlejerk please.
>>
>>65236

It's classic 4chan contrarianism. Weird it didn't start in this scale any sooner.
>>
>>62988
A general atheism thread doesn't really have much to do with history or the humanities? Relate it to the board somehow.

>>65327
Although, as an atheist, I feel compelled to ask - okay, but who's God is true, then?

Basically the early Lutherans(not sure about Luther himself) didn't know that much about the East but they sent letters to them about possible union, discussing their beliefs and so on. The first reply from the Orthodox was "lol no" the 2nd one was "lol srsly guys, no" and the 3rd was "pls stop writing us unless it's just as friends"

That's about all there is to say about it, it was clear the Lutherans weren't going to abandon their ideology for something foreign to them and the East never really budged for Rome itself, it sure wasn't going to compromise with the western schismatics.

Some Brits actually considered Orthodoxy during the English reformation, but ultimately decided that they didn't want any priests at all

technically atheists societies existed during the major socialist regimes
>>
>>65426
Hence why they ended up the way they did.
>>
>>65426
You mean like Eastern Bloc countries? Completely untrue, the establishment was atheist but society still had religious majority. Notice how when Hitler kicked the Soviets out of Ukraine the first thing the locals did was re-establish masses and other religious ceremonies. The same with all the other ex-communist countries going through a massive religious revival after 1989/1990.

tl;dr religion was only suppressed but never eradicated, most people were still religious
>>
>>62988
The very notion of history is inherently mixed with the idea of a higher truth, an unchangeable 'reason' behind the contingency of daily life.

Most Russians were and are religious. Also USSR lagged 50 years behind the west in development, eventually disintegrated and the successor states are now a hotbed of prostitution, drug addiction and poverty. Hardly something worth bragging about.
>>
>>65392
>who's God is true, then?
well say that there is a God and he does have followers on Earth, then how would one manage figuring out which one is "correct?"

Lots of historians point to Judaism being most likely candidate for this since it is the first recorded monotheistic religion. Then from there you have the two major branching religions: Christianity and Islam. Islam is the religion of a conqueror and pedophile used to create political power among nomadic tribes.

To prove Christianity wrong you need to somehow come up with argument against Jesus fulfilling the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament. You also need to come to head with the fact that Christianity is the only religion in which it is not man working towards God, but God coming down for man. It's the most unique religion in human existence, is the continuation of God's first recorded interaction with mankind, and serves no worldly purpose in itself.
>>
>>65724
>USSR lagged 50 years behind the west in development
no
the russian empire did

>>65676
>>65724
then it would be retarded to label an atheist society as a failure like this poster did >>65482 sine you people are saying it was not atheist
>>
>>65539
The administration was entirely atheistic and intentionally suppressed all forms of religion. That's the closest any society will ever get to being "atheistic"
>>
>I'm baffled

what a cry baby.

and what could you possibly discuss in an atheist thread, besides religion is stupid, muh enlightenment principles, and muh space exploration?
>>
>>62988
It's impossible to discuss human history and civilization without discussing religion. Christianity is central to the West and caused massive intellectual movements that influenced history.
Is this really such a hard thing to grasp?
>>
>>62988
>all the atheist threads gets deleted, ignored or vandalized

Neither of those have anything to do with atheism.

I didn't say that
>>
>>65804
Depends on how "civilized" you want to see the pre-20th centuries.
>>
>>65996
I'd like to see your definition of "civilized"

the 20th century saw more brutal and massive loss of life than any prior to it. Most of this was caused by political movements attempting to "progress" society.
>>
>>65996
Well the officially "atheist" regimes of USSR, communist China, Cambodia, have some of the some of the highest kill counts of innocent civilians in human history despite existing for less than 100 years. If that's your idea of civilized, be my guest.
>>
>>65724
Most Russians were and are not particualry religious. While about 75% of Russian population claim to be Orthodox Cristians, only claim 8% of them visit chucrch at least once a month, and 38% persent don't visit church at all.

In Russia religion has more to do with cultural identity than faith. The vast majority of Russians don't care whether a god exists or not.

The most important thing in Christianity is that we need to love and connect with God, and have a valid conception on Jesus and His teaching and live our lives accordingly

God is not exclusive to religion, all religions attempt to understand God, but religion is easily hijacked by men in ways we can't even imagine, but can because it is very evident that religion is a good thing that people can make bad, in a sense
>>
>>66233
literally 90% of those have nothing to do with the inherent qualities of unrestriced free trade

the difference is that socialist regimes killed people FOR socialism and that killed more people than any other idealistic force in human history
>>
>>66233
>everything that isn't outright communist is labeled as capitalism

Yeah no. Just on your list I see several feudal/mercantilist "crimes". I'm sure as fuck capitalism wasn't a thing in the 1500s.

Also Saddam Hussein was a socialist. Slobodan Milosevic was a socialist. Your picture is a load of shit and likely just a troll attempt.
>>
>>65332
As much as I agree with you. Atheism is also a humanities issue so one should also be able to regard it.

The atheists should tolerate people speaking on religion and vice versa. It's all fits in the board
>>
>>65725
Not only that but Christianity is the only religion where man has a *personal* relationship with god. Not just working for god but god also working for man in this dynamic relationship.

Thumbs up guy
>>
>>65996
To maintain truly historical who should speak of other times as they were and how the people saw it. "Civilized" regarding past times should be defined based on the times they're set in.
I mean, you could compare them with today but not define them based on our principles. That's just bringing unnecessary bias.

No, Vatican ruined everything. In his early days, Luther criticized only Johannes Tetzel. He explicitly said that Holy Father would be enraged if he knew about this. Later he discovered that the Pope not only tolerates this faggotry, but outright endorses it. Luther tried to reform the Catholic churh and the Vatican's response was to excommunicate him and run a witch hunt. Can't really blame Luther for the Vatican royally dropping the ball on this.

That's because the Communists destroyed thousands of churches, hospitals, monasteries, seminaries, universities, executed thousands of clergymen, and forced their school teachers to be atheists. One only needs to watch Andrei Rublev or read The Brothers Karamozov to realize how Christian Russia was before then.
>>
>>66712
Only on paper. I've grown up in an East Bloc country and my family was protestant even though they publicly declared to be atheist so they wouldn't be disadvantaged or persecuted.
