What I said the purpose of any academic field? Read the damn books yourself. That includes STEM shit. I taught myself HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java, and Python with only resources I found on 4chan. The same goes for Indian and Chinese philosophy. There is no excuse for academia.

Laying a foundation for other fields. You find a lot of philosophy in new, interdisciplinary sciences since you're forced to touch on methodology, a common language between the fields and other stuff more suited for philosophy than a single science. Just ask a random person with a master's degree and they'll explain it further.
