Why is this a bad thing?
>>

An historian's job, ideally speaking, should be to understand, not to judge.
And even if you are going to judge something, at least do this in light of the context in which it happened.
If you slap your own conceptions over the past, you pretty much just use history as an excuse to preach and push your own values.
Green isn't an historian, at best he is a commentator or a polemist.

See his Crash Course Litterature video about the Illiad, where he complains during half the video about the Patriarchy.

Or just watch any of his video, really. It's proaganda for teenage girls. And I heard they show this shit in American classrooms.
>>
for me it's the fact that he's balls deep into the "west is bad" mentality.
His vids have a lot of bias cherry picking one or two sources to get a view of history most in keeping with his own political vieuws/feelings.

If i wanted some garbage re write of history for political reasons I'd go watch the greathest story never told. At least /pol/ has decent edditing.
>>
>>284973
They do. In place of actual learning I can still remember just being shown a 15min video and getting handed a 8 question "test".

>West is evil
>But le Mongols are awesome.

The Mongols are awesome, is terms of pure terror, brutality and ruthlessness inspiring awe. Not in being safe cuddly tumblr memes.
>>
>>284939
It's detrimental for your better understanding of the events. By judging the events with modern ideas and morals, you're falling away from the ideas and morals of the time, therefore hijacking your own understanding of the ancient people's motivations. Considering that trying to understand past mentality is already pretty difficult, shooting your own foot is something you should avoid.

Don't forget that the purpose of history as a subject is knowledge of the past (and then you can use this knowledge for whatever you want, or ignore it if it doesn't suit your agenda).
>>
>>284973
Literally our entire unit on Imperialism in high school consisted of white guilt and "watch this john green video which is about guess what more white guilt."

I'm not a stormfag, but it was ridiculous.

I hope that wasn't at university. I'd walk out if my lecturer started a John Green video.

You need too many degrees and years of study to teach at a university. With that much experienc,e you cannot decently show John Green to anyone, except as a counter-example of how vulgarization should be done.

I remember that our teacher used the documentary version of guns, germs and steel in my first year of university. It's been a long time so I don't remember if it was for pre-history or ancient history.

She asked for a review and I remember I made a moderate critique, questioning some of Diamond's points but overall not bashing him much. After all, most teachers want you to show you can be critical but they actually get butthurt if you go too far against his ideas.

From what I could gather by asking my companions, I got one of the best grades. Apparently the teacher hated Diamond's guts and wanted us to completely dismantle his point. Most sudents limited themselves to just agreeing with the documentary, believing they were agreeing with the teacher.

Green studied Religious Studies. Believe it or not, that's his specialization, not history, not literature.

Yeah it's horrible. Stemshits should be banned from writing history if they're not gonna get some baggage into humanities first, t.b.h.
>>
>>285171

I have a professor that actually shows a lot of John Green videos
>>
Aw cool /his/ now
Has a hivemind. This is gonna be epic
>>
Doesn't he have some gaudy 'kill all fascist' sticker on his laptop in every video now?
>>
I like John Green whenever he is not going full retard about MUH PATRIARCHY. Also his non "euro-centric" approach is really interesting if you want to learn about non western history. Just don't swallow the "the west is evil, but the Mongols were totally fine" cool-aid.

And no. I'm not female nor have I ever read any of his fiction.
>>
>>285924
>believe it or not, that's his specialization, not history, not literature
>not literature

I believe it.
>>
>>286040
My post was badly phrased as he obviously didn't graduate on history either. I got surprized by the religious studies thing, though.
>>
>>286024
>now

Since the beggining. Is from some american musician, he and his motto also appear in that book written by Green that got a movie with Cara Delevingne recently.
>>
>>286038
I was curious and checked his fiction (only paper towns) and to be honest it's better than anything I did read when I was a teenager. I'm ok with my little sister reading that and not twilight, for example.

The videos could be better, but there's really no better option. They're mostly just not for anyone who browses an history board, and is expected to already have a general knowledge of history beyond pop history.

I actually enjoyed some of his later videos though. Like that one about civilization, I didn't know shit about that Zomia thing. Maybe Green isn't the best to learn about it, but he gave me a 10 minute introduction and since I had zero knowledge about those stateless peoples that's what I needed to start.
>>
>>284800
That is a very interesting interpretation of that quote.
>>
>>286024
"This Machine Kills Fascists".
I think its from a WW2 propaganda poster or written on the side of a tank. Something like that.
>>
>>286024
What's the deal with the anti-fascist movement? I recently moved to a university city and anti-fascist stickers are absolutely everywhere, despite the fact there's no actual fascist movement to speak of.
>>
>>286277
>What's the deal with the anti-Satan movement? I recently moved to a holy city and anti-Satan speakers are absolutely everywhere, despite the fact there's no actual Satanist movement to speak of.
It's a religion desu.
>>
>>286277
"anti-fascists" are just some leftist thugs. Basically hooligans, but leftwing instead of rightwing. Don't worry about them, they probably undermined your student council, but all this leftist shit at universities is just a very loud and obnoxious minority.
>>
>>284452
I don't. He gets some things wrong here and there but overall he's a great pop history resource
>>
>>284659
ITS A QUARREL
>>
>>286252
not quite, it's actually a phrase that was written on the guitar of Woody Guthrie, a legendary American folks musician.
>>
>>286373
Right. I could have sworn I'd seen it in WW2 photographs but they could have been shoops.
>>
>>286277
Fascism is a buzzword nowadays. It mostly means "thing I don't like" though it has a more or less stable right-wing connotation. Precisely because there's no strong fascist movement anymore, the word fascism will probably evolve to become closer to this definition rather than the original one.

Actually, leftism, marxism, etc. are also gigantic buzzwords. Not on the level of fascism, but well.
>>
>>284983
>picking one or two sources to get a view of history most in keeping with his own political vieuws/feelings.

That is pretty much most of how history is wrote desu.

>>
>>284452

His video on the Dark Ages is dreadful, which leaves me disinclined to trust anything else he has to say.
>>
>>286277
Anti-fascism is fascism itself
>>
>>286406
Would an american say "some american musician" senpai?
>>
>>286402
Not really. Any serious book is a flood of citations, way more than two.
>>
>>286427
An american would know Woody Guthrie.
>>
>>286432
Mainly was referring to how history has been written in the past. Almost all commonly accepted history has been revised by the conquerors.
>>
>>286008
No, it's just that one person is so unbelievably bad that there's a very clear consensus.
>>
>>286453
Well it depends on the conqueror, but yeah. It's not like historians trust the writers of primary sources though.
>>
I don't really dislike the guy. Then again, I never read anything or watched any thing by him, except for Crash Course, and an analysis of "Catcher in the Rye".

Thing is, I like the way he explains things. And I think he's doing a pretty alright job teaching people about stuff.

Maybe he's not a great philosopher or historian, but he's a good teacher.
>>
>>286425
Yes, but anyone who would call themselves an anti-fascist is probably so self-righteous that they'd never realize this.
>>
>>286408
Why? Didn't he say there was no dark ages like /his/ also insists?

>>286563
Yeah if I remember right he talks about how feudalism made a lot of sense for the period and how it wasn't the complete collapse of culture and technology that it's made out to be.

Now his Renaissance video, holy shit.
>>
>>286075
I'm not. There is a world of difference between "religious studies" and "theology", and John Green is an Episcopalian after all.
>>
>>284973
Yeah when I was in high school teachers would show his videos occasionally and all the annoying girls in the class would fangirl over him. I was always thought he and his brothers seemed like smug dicks who didn't actually know enough to tutor people on the subjects.
>>
John Green is so lame that fucking Tumblr bullies him.

>>285483

>>
Because look at this faggot
>>
>>284956
Doesnt help that the preferred academic term is historical judgments.
>>
>>284939

There's a difference between relaying history with an open mind and offering commentary on it. Some people claim to be historians, but are ultimately just using historical studies as a way to get an instant soap box where otherwise people probably wouldn't listen to them. A good historian knows when to relay the facts objectively and how to make clear what are just his own personal judgements without forcing his students to believe as he does.

It's also problematic to pass judgement on the past for not following your morals when your morals are themselves a product of that history and simply did not exist in the past for you to be able to expect others to follow them. Which is why the modernist critique of the classical and medieval period always feels shallow.
>>
>>284452

A screen flickers to light in a dark classroom in Stockholm, Sweden. The students eagerly await the video to load, so they can receive their anticipated lesson.

>Hi! I'm John Green and this is Crash Course: World History and we're going to talk about the Renaissance.

The Students clap and cheer violently, a round of applause going around the room and the children smile, knowing the all-wise John Green is here to educate them about the past.

>We all know those stupid Eurocentrists claim the Renaissance was driven by Italian innovation...

The students boo and frown, vaguely aware that the "Yuro-centrists" are always the bad guys in Mr. Green's lessons. A few are on the edge of their seats and in tears, hoping that Mr. Green will soon defeat the bad guys like he does every video.

>but every true non-fascist knows it wasn't done by privileged Italians at all...it was driven by Muslims!

The students cheer and cry tears of joy, knowing that at this point in the video they are transported into Mr. Green's "Thought Bubble", which shows them delightful images of men in turbans painting Renaissance art and raising children with white Italian mothers.

>But remember kids... the Renaissance didn't even matter! The Europeans still didn't have socialized healthcare and multiculturalism! See you next episode!

The screen suddenly goes dark, and the children dejectedly leave the classroom for their next class: Traditions of Islam and Cultural Awareness.

note how in the Crusades episode he rejects the marxist proto-colonialism narrative and also eschews the europeans seeking plunder narrative and talks about how people rich and poor back in 1099 were true believers and could actually be driven by religious fervor

i really dont get this white guilt thing honestly
maybe you can point to the glaring omission of the cataclysmic 30-years' war at which you could go 'muh yurocentrism' about but thats about it

It stems from the fact that he focuses on stupid fucking puns, shitty jokes, and shoehorned pop-culture references. He looks at history from today's morals, making history nothing more than stupid fucking facts to remember. Not to mention the fact that he breezes through important points in less that 10 minutes. All great posts.

I quite like Crash Course World History, but it suffers from that. As one of them said, it's not even close to academic work, it's more comment on history. Therefore his bias is inherent.
>>
>>284452
Hurr durr le actions of individuals and their opinions are completely inconsequential, only economics disease (stupid disease always ruining everything) matter. He is also just a hypocritical leftist in general, only mentioning things like homophobia and sexism when talking about the west, but never mentioning it around anybody else.
>>
>>295434
My only complaint, and it's against the world in general rather than against Green, is that there's no real alternative.

The possible "alternatives" don't offer what green's craschourse history gives. This is, a ten minutes explanation of a subject orientated to clueless people (mostly teenagers). Which is what allows the Green brothers to have 3.638.603 subscriptors.
