Well, COINTELPRO was also aimed against the SWP and other socialist movements [1]. Various defectors have reported that the Soviet Union was involved in various West-German, Europan and American movements, predominantly the "peace movement", but also various other movements. Between the 30's and 40's they were directly involved in various Communist and Black movements in the USA.

So I would't be surprised that they were also involved in the 60's and 70's, the Soviet Union was involved in ALL socialist/communist movements worldwide. The BPP is also described as socialist.

That is exactly their strategy. To appear "conservative" even maybe "nationalist", financing both sides, left and right. We see this in Germany right now. Putin was a fucking Lieutenant Colonel in the KGB. He knows how to weaken an enemy (and the West IS an enemy). So I wouldn't be surprised that Russia has his hands in the current BLM/SJW movement. Because they did it, they know how to do it, and it will profit them in the long term.

Nor can I see the Soviet Union intentionally collapsing itself, losing all its Eastern European territory and enduring decades of irrelevance, in the hope that a secret underground movement would remain the dominant force in world politics despite overt US dominance and successfully undermine the West.

The driving force are the members of those organizations of course. But they definitely get support.

No need for that. Most of the citizens are leaning to socialist policies or are infact socialists. You don't need an underground network when you already seeded the seeds over decades.
