Can anyone explain why Imperial Russia was so behind from the rest of Europe in the early 20th century? Was there some kind of big thing in history I'm forgetting or were the Imperial family just fucking around?

It never had the need to transition away from an agrarian economy. During the renaissance, there was a surplus of labor within manor lands in Western Europe, which caused a rural exodus, and the rise of cities. Russian had a surplus of land, so any transition away from an agrarian society had to be done through reforms from the top-down, a la Stalin.
If you look at Russian history, all modernization attempts within Russia were done from the top-down, rather than from natural population movements like in Western Europe.
