I was watching black sails and I was wondering. Were warships and galleons really that superior to regular ships? The Spanish warship defeated a small English fleet and destroyed an entire village with a bombardment in one episode and with 3 rounds of volleys destroyed 2 regular ships and made them explode

What the hell are 'regular' ships?

And yes, obviously a huge First Rate with a billion FUCKOFF cannons has a couple of advantages over smaller ships. Big surprise.

So let me get this straight.

>literally who peasant from some shitty backwater village
>fails exam and has a nervous breakdown
>reads a pamphlet and has some weird dreams
>concludes he's Jesus' bro
>convinces a few other people he's Jesus' bro
>starts a religion based around himself
>somehow it catches on
>his cult captures a few cities and he ends up running his own country
>starts a war that leaves 20-100 million dead

And yeah I know alot of the casualties were from famine and disease, but the whole situation is pretty crazy.

A lot of the rebels joined up because their lives were shitty and they hated the Manchus, not because they really believed he was the son of God and little brother of Jesus. Mao Zedong considered the Taiping Rebellion to be a legitimate example of peasant uprising and class struggle.
>>
>>2870618
Eh, the whole reason most people supported him was mostly "let's overthrow the dynasty, this nigga's someone that wants to do it and we can get behind".

Having crazy guy as that fella was just a coincidence.

Philip II of Macedon, who after invading southern Greece and receiving the submission of other key city-states, sent a message to Sparta:

You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city.[3]

The Spartan ephors replied with a single word:

If.[4]

Subsequently, neither Philip nor his son Alexander the Great attempted to capture the city. Philip is also recorded as approaching Sparta on another (?) occasion and asking whether he should come as friend or foe; the reply was "Neither"

Alexander the Great's father basically made them his puppets by establishing the League of Corinth.

That's all I know on the topic I know. I don't know if anything happened between then and Alexanders conquests.

considering them being >italy pretty good

early war they could land a hit as good as the RN at day, but as the war progressed and the RN got RADAR they lost their edge and also then there's Taranto

How did the Arabs become so piss-poor at fighting in the latter half of the 20th century?

At least in the 19th and early 20th century you had Arabs such as Muhammad Ahmad, Muhammad Ali Pasha, and Abd el-Krim (to name a few), who all provided a serious challenge to the various colonial powers.

What happened to all that zeal and fighting spirit?

Because they fucked their cousins for thousands of years and so they all ended up retarded.
>>
1. 20th century Arab states are, and I can't think of another way to put it, colonial constructs. Instead, personal loyalties often go to religion or:

2. Tribalism. Look how fast the Iraqi Army bolted when ISIS had momentum. They don't really care about the 'country' they're defending. But that zeal comes through big-time when faced with sectarian matters (which is religious tribalism)

3. Arabs and modern warfare just don't mix. I read something about a someone in the US military who worked in the Middle East with Arab 'allies', and he complained about how they refuse to do the nitty gritty work of maintaining all their fancy equipment/tech. Also, something about how Syria's air force being really stupid against Israel.
>>
>>2870204
>Muhammad Ali
>Arab

The Arabs weren't great fighters anyway. Even during the Abbasid Caliphate they were relying on Turks, Circassian mercenaries and Dailamites to do the fighting for them

Is there any reason for us humans having such a hard time engaging someone we disagree with without insulting them, whether it be internally or externally?

Is it normal to think everyone we disagree with is an idiot? And why is it so easy (especially online, but it used to happen in antiquity as well) to outright claim anyone with a vastly different view from us shouldn't even be given the opportunity to voice their toughs?

I mean, I guess the first reason is that we somehow feel dissenting opinions are a threat to us in some way, and it's not always unfounded, but it does seem like an odd natural reaction to something that surely we didn't initially evolved to deal with.

It's a combination of a huge ego, sensitive feelings, and the fact that most people have a us or them mentality.

I would also factor in that we have anonymity, at least as far as this site goes. The layer of anonymity lets people shoot their mouth off and voice their innermost thoughts and feelings. The fact that there is zero stigma attached to you afterward gives one a sense of boldness.

The Germans wanted to remove Russia as a regional power, because it was rapidly industrializing, and due to Germany's appalling diplomacy, the French, Russians, and English were all hostile towards them.

The assassination was an excuse to execute military plans that had been on the drawing board for a decade leading up to the war.
>>
>>2869876

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the most consistent and powerful voice for peace within Austria. Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf had gone to the Austrian government many times before, asking them to declare war on Serbia. And each time, who was it who talked them out of it? Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The assassination was like the perfect storm. It gave Austria-Hungary casus belli against Serbia (although there was zero evidence of Serbian involvement) and simultaneously removed the guy who would have had the best chance of maintaining the fragile peace. Hötzendorf immediately recognized the opportunity and took full advantage of it. His biggest obstacle was dead, and he now had an excuse to declare war. Perfect.

Basically, the bismarckian alliance system combined with the age of colonialism provoked an unstable period of relationships between European powers. The murder of Franz Ferdinand was simply the fuse of the war.
