Was the French army the best fighting force among european great powers by 1918 ? They had the greatest amount of tanks, planes and trucks, their soldiers and generals were experienced and had a high morale, but how was it really like in comparison with their british and german counterparts ? Also, were the russian, ottoman and austrian armies that bad compared to the three mentioned above ? Why ?

by 1918 the french had come so close to mutiny in the trenches a million times, the soldiers were war weary, shellshocked and tired of being bombed by their own commanders for the past couple of years... the commanders (most of whom were still being drafted from the nobility and bourgeoisie by that time) might have been in good spirit, the average jean in the trenches was not... brits had the largest navy and the possibility of one of the largest armies in the world (look up the battle plan the americans had to fight against the evil british empire in the '20's)... the germans were even worse than the french because their economy was dieing faster than a cow hit by a train...
>>
>>2883933
The british forces were far from being better than the french. In 1917, the Germans attacked the british troops, because they knew they were weaker than their french counterpart.
>>
>>2883882
The French army might have had a lot of materiel and experience, but it's important to note that it had *severe* manpower issues by 1918. After 4 years of grinding warfare, the French army, and by extension the French male population was bled white. This is also the reason for them giving more and more jobs to the US army.

Althoug my life is a relatively serene and happy one, I don't really think it does really counterbalance even the less tragic of all the fucked up events that characterize this world.

If there is a God, should I be grateful to him for my life, even if I know for a fact that babies die every second for unnecessary reasons? With what courage could I believe in a God that would allow things like this to happen in even only one istance? Am I really supposed to forget that the world is basically a disease-infected monumental bloodbath, at all levels of nature?

What are the reasons for believing in God, given the horror that human life, actually life in general, has been since the dawn of time? I can easily imagine a world that is better than this, why couldn't he?

Maybe that suffering is there so you can make it better. Maybe you'll make a whole lot more better than just what you are working on in the process. Maybe you'll make things so much better for everyone for so long that it justifies the suffering that led up to it.
Stop bitching about things like some sad sack of shit. If there is something you don't like about this world, then attempt to change it. Other people make meaningful changes in this world, why can't you?
>>
>>2883585
>God deliberately makes a shit planet and a flawed species to rule over it, which results in unfathomable suffering.
>This is done so that humans might change it and make it better, but God already knows whether or not humans will succeed in this endeavour because he is omnipotent, and therefore omniscient.
>The logical conclusion of this is that everything in our life is fated/pre-destined, so there is literally no point to anything we do because God has already decided it.

What a horrifying view of human nature and reality.

Question:

Why did God create humans in this way? If what I said before is true, and it is if you assume God is omnipotent, then surely he does it for his own amusement?

>but he loves us
Killing 5 million children every year through starvation sure is a strange fucking way of showing you love someone.

Stalin was better than Hitler because Stalin didn't mass murder people based on their race.

What tactics could the Romans have used to avoid the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and the loss of 3 legions ?

Context :

The legionnaires followed along rudimentary trails that meandered among the Germans' farmsteads, scattered fields, pastures, bogs and oak forests. As they progressed, the line of Roman troops—already seven or eight miles long, including local auxiliaries, camp followers and a train of baggage carts pulled by mules-became dangerously extended.

Varus and his troops were entering a passage between a hill and a huge swamp known as the Great Bog that, in places, was no more than 60 feet wide. As the increasingly chaotic and panicky mass of legionnaires, cavalrymen, mules and carts inched forward, Germans appeared from behind trees and sand-mound barriers, cutting off all possibility of retreat.
Rather than face certain torture at the hands of the Germans, he chose suicide, falling on his sword as Roman tradition prescribed. Most of his commanders followed suit, leaving their troops leaderless in what had become a killing field.

>"An army unexcelled in bravery, the first of Roman armies in discipline, in energy, and in experience in the field, through the negligence of its general, the perfidy of the enemy, and the unkindness of fortune was exterminated almost to a man by the very enemy whom it has always slaughtered like cattle"
Velleius Paterculus, a survivor.

Did the Roman Army systematically loose when it had no choice over the time and place of the engagement ? I'm seeing a parallel between fighting germanic tribes hiding in forest and the conquest America. Of course, legionnaires lacked the mobility of the spanish musket infantry or the US cavalry, but does it really all comes down to that ? Mobility ?

What do you think about the French commercial strategy in New France ? Setting Forts, trading with the native, making alliance and make them fight each other. Could it have been adapted to Germania by Rome ?

I have suddenly become extremely interested in the holy roman empire. however, it is overwhelming to begin to learn it's history. where do you begin with this incredible segment of western history?

You must first realise that it is not roman.
Then you must know that it is just a bunch of petty princes and isnt an empire.
They were excommunicated a bunch so they aren't holy.

You are in full command of 227 men.

113 are fully trained western Frankish knights, all wearing full plate Armour and mounted on large trained horses. They are equipped with steel 13ft lances, swords, maces, warhammers, and heater shields.

100 men are early Saxon Kneel. Think of the early Saxon invaders of roman Britain, or 600ADish Celtic warriors.
They are wearing chainmail coats over boiled leather jerkins and are equipped with both spears and swords and large oval shields capable of forming a shield wall. These warriors also have access to horses, though they are smaller, more akin to a Hunnic horse than a knights destrier

the last 15 are Geonese crossbowmen, wearing chainmail and leather, equipped with a crossbow and sword. They also have a large pavise style shield that they can hide behind as they reload.

With this dynamic force, How would you defeat a larger force of 600 mongols. These mongols wield the composite bow, though they do not have access to bodkin arrowheads. They fight in the typical mongolian fashion, I will let your own knowledge of history determine your enemy's tactics just as you determine your own.
How would you win the battle, Imperator?
