Was a world war inevitable? It seems like regardless of what happened a major war would have been inevitable before 1920 considering how rapidly the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires were declining. Call it a hunch but I have a feeling that two large empires breaking up into numerous weak states would lead to some conflict

Not inevitable but likely IMO.

All it would've really taken to contain it was some cooler heads at the table. There likely would've been some smaller conflicts, sort of like the Balkan wars, but it breaking into a general war was mostly autism on the part of [side you don't like].

It was mostly the rise of Germany (with its unfortunate geography) and Japan that made a war inevitable.

Two part question.

First, how did the Ku Klux Klan become so damn popular outside of Dixie? Despite starting life as a Southern institution, the Klan had chapters from Oregon to Maine and everywhere betwixt. Indeed, the Klan was never more powerful than it was in Indiana in the '20s where one in three white men was a member, half the General Assembly were members, and virtually no local politician in the state could get elected without a Klan endorsement.

Second, why is the Ku Klux Klan in specific, and racism in general, labeled as a southern problem? Liberals across the west coast and Yankeedom proclaim in all seriousness "we just aren't like that here" and write off racism as a problem strictly for southern rednecks. The deep south is forced to consider and reconsider its vile history of racism half a century after the passage of the Civil Rights Act, but whites in Chicago, Boston, and other major northern cities aren't written off as "a bunch of racists."

>how did the Ku Klux Klan become so damn popular outside of Dixie?
Klan died and was reborn in the 1910's, no longer focused on dismantling reconstruction-era southern governments, but instead adopting anti-Catholicism as more and more Catholic European immigrants started coming to the US. This broadens their appeal from strictly southerners to people in Midwestern and East Coast big cities who have to deal with the European immigrants.
>>
>>2889975
There is a false impression that the South, or rather the Southern people are more racist, though the inner cities of the North have insured this isn't quite true however to answer your 2nd question: During the Civil Rights Movements of the 60s, Southern states were the last to desegregate, they were also the states with the most push-back. Although racism was still widespread in Yankeedom, it wasn't excepted as easily in regular society. There's video somewhere of a Pennsylvannia suburb where a black was moving in and whites were complaining that their property values would go down, and even some eluded to the potential for shady activity that the black family could attract...that being said, the people in said video seemed a little reluctant to share those views, some who didn't seem to say much clearly didn't care for it...in the South those same people would have had no problem saying those things. Another thing is the stereotype that "the south is more racist" is derived from a time when it actually was, Chicago, Boston, New York burroughs, etc. weren't the shitholes that are associated with black communities that they are now...in other words, the North has less exposure to blacks at the time and opinions on blacks were less sharp. There's also the obvious connections of the South with the confederacy and the original formation of the KKK.

>The first genome data from ancient Egyptian mummies

>The study, published today in Nature Communications, found that modern Egyptians share more ancestry with Sub-Saharan Africans than ancient Egyptians did, whereas ancient Egyptians were found to be most closely related to ancient people from the Near East.

>The study found that ancient Egyptians were most closely related to ancient populations in the Levant, and were also closely related to Neolithic populations from the Anatolian Peninsula and Europe.

>The data shows that modern Egyptians share approximately 8% more ancestry on the nuclear level with Sub-Saharan African populations than with ancient Egyptians.

Why the hell did the Confederates start a war they could not possibly hope to win? Would secession have been successful if the Confederacy remained peaceful?

>Why the hell did the Confederates start a war they could not possibly hope to win?

They didn't think they had no hope. They weren't counting on an extended war, they just hoped to defeat the federal army quickly and force a peace treaty.

>Would secession have been successful if the Confederacy remained peaceful?

Well, there was no legal basis for it, and Lincoln was quite committed to holding the union together. But maybe, if they kept pushing for it. It's hard to imagine a situation where half the country us actively trying to leave continuing for decades.
>>
>>2883411
They possibly could have had a chance to win if they weren't under naval blockade by the union, a blockade that kept them from receiving the imported war materiel they so desperately needed as they were not as industrially developed as the north and thus not nearly as self sufficient.

However, they had excellent commanders like General Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest that would put serious whoop ass on union armies even though they were almost always outgunned, out supplied, and under-manned compared to the union forces.

As to whether they could have peacefully seceded or not, I doubt it. The north was extremely hell bent on having a massive and wealthy United state, from north to south and east to west. If the jonny reb's had never started shelling fort Sumter, I'm sure some other crisis or reason would be found to keep the south in check through force.

I'm not prejudiced against blacks or a southerner in the most traditional sense, but it breaks my heart to see crazy SJWs tearing down old statues of general Lee and the others. You don't have to share their beliefs, but once history is destroyed you can never get it back. Same as Isis destroying ancient sites across the Levant, we'll never have those treasures of human antiquity or American historical monuments again.

Alright, thread's over, we have a winner.

Im curious about the lesser known Christian denominations! The Nestorians, The Coptic Catholic, the St. Thomas Christians, the Apostolic Church, Oriental Orthodox, these sorts!

What differentiates them from larger bodies of Christianity, like the Catholic Church? What is the difference in their doctrine, what do they profess to be the core beliefs of Christianity? Any seminal writings from their respective churches that they consider part of their canon, or at least gave way to helping define their beliefs? Any juicy bits of history worth knowing?

A lot of these branches are very ancient, so I want to know what they see as Christianity! I can offer up what little I know

>Coptic Catholic
literally just Catholics LARPing as Copts
>St. Thomas Christians, Apostolic Church, Oriental Orthodox
The last term encompasses the first two.
The Armenian Apostolic Church and St Thomas Christians (the Malankara Church) are the parts of the Oriental Orthodox Communion that are in Armenia and India, respectively. The Oriental Communion, presently, is Miaphysite, which believes that Christ has one nature which is both human and divine, as opposed to the Chalcedonian (Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox) belief that Christ has two natures (one human and one divine) that are in union with one another.

Pic related, it's the Holy Synod of the Syriac Malankara Church.

Both Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox agree now that they *currently* believe the same thing; however, at the time of the Chalcedonian split, the Oriental Orthodox wasn't Miaphysite, they were Eutychians(spelling?), meaning that they believed Christ had a single nature that was only divine, not human.

(pic is an oriental orthodox icon of St Cyril of Alexandria, who led the struggle against Nestorius.

Okay so I go to a Catholic School, and we were given an assignment on Hitler's relationship with the Catholic Church. Being a history buff like most of you fags, and with a specific liking towards WWII, I went really over the top with this. I'm casual with this teacher so the language is rather colloquial and I used the royal 'we' in place of I because it's an in joke we have and I like being an asshole. Anyway here it is, if anyone would like to read it and give and advice I'd greatly appreciate it, and if not then no harm done.

First we want to bring up Hitler’s Kirchenkampf (Foreign words will be italicized and have their meanings after them. This one means Church Struggle and is pronounced Kir-Chen-Kampf), his attempt to essentially eradicate German Churches (Protestant and Catholic alike) with the end goal of establishing one German Protestant Church dedicated to loyalty to the Nazi Party above all. This was a section where we explained the Kulturkampf but hey you already know that; TLDR the Church knew where this was going and the Nazis had their game plan to follow. Now for more backstory, as article 24 of the Lateran Treaty specifically states “In regard to the sovereignty appertaining to it also in the international realm, the Holy See declares that it desires to remain and will remain outside of any temporal rivalries between other States and the international congresses called to settle such matters, unless the contending parties make a mutual appeal to its mission of peace; it reserves to itself in any case the right to exercise its moral and spiritual power. Consequently, Vatican City will always and in every case be considered neutral and inviolable territory.”(Lateran Treaty), dictating a mandatory impartiality of the Vatican when viewed as a political entity, and would (almost definitely) be viewed as null and void if any Pope were to go against it, leading to a probable Italian invasion of the Vatican and the resulting horrific results of that.
>>
Ironically (and tangentially), the Italian government probably violated it in 1938 when they put out the Leggi Razziali (Racial Laws) based on the Manifesto Della Razza (Manifesto of Race) (A pseudo-scientific report about how Italians were pure descendants of the ‘Aryan Race’ and declared Africans and Jews inferior and the related Leggi Razziali (among other really dumb ideas) banned Jews from marrying non-Jews, a direct violation of the Papal Concordat that accompanied the Lateran Treaty, which stated in Article 24 that “The Italian State, wishing to restore to the institution of matrimony, which is the foundation of the family, that dignity which is conformable with the Catholic traditions of its people, recognizes the civil effects of the Sacrament of matrimony regulated by Canon Law...The provisions and the relative sentences when they have become definitive shall be carried to the supreme tribunal of the Segnatura.”which gave the Segnatura (essentially Papal Authority, literally a papal document with the signature of the Pope) the final say on marriage, and (was supposed to) guarantee that the Church had the final authority over her marriages and that only she could end them, something the Leggi Razziali section on Jew to Non-Jew marriages. This shows the disregard that Hitler (and his ally Mussolini) had for the Catholic Church, and it makes us skeptical of any collaboration between the two.
>>
Back to the Kirchenkampf though, where Hitler tried to create the Reichskirche (Reich Church), attempting to turn the Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchenbund(German Evangelical Church Confederation, a loose council-y thingy sort of like a League of Nations for German Protestant Churches) into a really dumb Nazi dogmatic ‘Church’ that restricted baptism to Aryans only and a ton of other really really dumb ideas. To the credit of German Protestants they formed a counterpart called the Bekennende Kirche (Confessing Church) that stuck to universal baptism but never actually called out the Nazis for anything, but even then their resistance to Hitler led to many of their leaders being sent to concentration camps and being executed, and through the Confessing Church many passports and identification documents were donated to Jews, and a small number of Jews were hid by the Church. If you would like to hear more about them I recommend googling Marga Meusel or Hans Ehrenberg, they have some cool adventures and stuff, but I neglect to put them here because this one paragraph is definitely big enough.
