What century irreversibly shaped the world we live in? I don't really know how to phrase this so I'll just make my argument.

Most people would say it was the 5th century that saw the collapse of the Roman Empire and rise of medievality, the 16th century Renaissance, or the 18th century enlightenment. I think the 20th century was the one. It saw the fall of all the world's great powers and an emergence of just two (also saw one of the two falling), as well as two wars that reshaped warfare forever and sucked the glory right out of war. What else?

Turks are probably the most genetically-tested people in the world besides the Jews. It's been consistently found that:

1. Modern Turks are the descendants of people native to Anatolia.
2. They're more European than anything else.
3. Central Asian contribution to their DNA is 13-15%.
4. They're most similar to the people of the Caucasus.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_studies_on_Turkish_people

> Several studies have concluded that the genetic haplogroups indigenous to Western Asia have the largest share in the gene pool of the present-day Turkish population. An admixture analysis determined that the Anatolian Turks share most of their genetic ancestry with non-Turkic populations in the region and the 12th century is set as an admixture date.[14][2][2][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
> At K = 3 level, using individuals from the Middle East (Druze and Palestinian), Europe (French, Italian, Tuscan and Sardinian) to obtatin a more representative database for Central Asia (Uygur, Hazara and Kyrgyz), clustering results indicated that the contributions were 45%, 40% and 15% for the Middle Eastern, European and Central Asian populations, respectively. For K = 4 level, results for paternal ancestry were 38% European, 35% Middle Eastern, 18% South Asian and 9% Central Asian. K= 7 results of paternal ancestry were 77% European, 12% South Asian, 4% Middle Eastern, 6% Central Asian.[2]
>Other studies revealed that the peoples of the Caucasus (Georgians, Circassians, Armenians) are the closest to the Turkish population among sampled European (French, Italian), Middle Eastern (Druze, Palestinian), and Central (Kyrgyz, Hazara, Uygur), South (Pakistani), and East Asian (Mongolian, Han) populations.[2][32][33][34]

they have a complex relationship with china, on one hand China was Japan's Ancient Greece, source of culture and knowledge, but also an invader
i forgot specifically when, but during a dynastic change in china the relationship got really bad because the japanese noble class were descended and had good relationship with the ousted dynasty
they thought little of the empire after that

Could I get some information on the relative size of armies from countries between the 1400-1793.
Some major questions I have
Did monarchies usually field a higher percentage of men than republics?
Did larger countries always have a larger armies?
How likely was a country to use mercenaries over levies?
Did local mercenaries behave differently than foreign ones?
Did countries hire mercenaries from all over europe or where they usually from only one area.
If mercenaries found themselves stronger than the country they were hired for would they be more inclined to plunder or rather take over the government?

If you would push the age a bit earlier, the catalan company would answer lots of them about mercs. If you have some free times read about them, it's a pretty fun train wreck about the ERE, including Kebab removing, backstabing, atrocities and lots of combats.
The first question is not always, republics tended to hire more mercs while monarchies tended to use, specially earlier, lots of feudal troops than would figth x days each year for free.
Bigger countries didn't field larger armies ever, but of course was pretty common for them to have more men.
Levies it's a last resource thing, you don't want the peasants and free men than are the backbone of your economy to die if you can hire some mooks. Mostly tough it was a mix dependigng of the zone, in Spain in general it was common to use the local troops for anything, in some city states in Italy to hire mercs for example.
Of course they did, different culture and only cared for money. So they were better for body guards because they were isolated and you got they loyalty as long as you paid them enough, like the ERE emperors did with they varangian guard.
They were recruited from all over, but determined zones produced more renowed mercs than other, like the Brabançons from Brabant, Aragones from Aragon, Bascoli from the Basque country, Genouse Crossbowmen, Stradiots from the balkans etc

If Europe is a classroom, then what kind of kids would European countries be?

I guess it depends what century/grade it would be. In first grade, Italy would be the one kid who hit 5' at age 6 and bullies everyone, but by grade 12, Britain is 6'7 and takes steroids so he's a fuckhueg chad with a multi-ethnic gaggle of Stacies following him around (India, Africa, Chinese) but by college he mellowed out, started smoking pot and lost all his muscle so he's a harmless lanklet.

This is basically a different version of the polandball comics

Can the rise of absolutist monarchs in 17th century Europe be seen as a sort of proto-fascism? Were there any key differences between the two systems, either politically or culturally?
11 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Absolutism was about getting rid of rebellious nobles, and had nothing to do with "the people" or "the nation" that were so important to the Fascists. It was just one end of an Aristocratic squabble, and the Fascists were extremely anti-aristocrat
>>
>>2900703
Fascism was more march-y and police-y. Abs Monarchies were more tradition-y and aristocratic.

Funny things in history thread.

>Russo-Japanese War
>Pacific Fleet gets bottled up in Vladivostok, Russian land forces getting BTFO
>Admiralty decides to send the Baltic Fleet to the Pacific to save the day
>six battleships, most modern warships Russia has
>crews and ships completely unprepared for combat
>the battleship Oryol sinks in the harbor before they even leave
>finally make it out into the North Sea behind schedule in autumn 1904
>Britain is Japan's ally, not at war but suspected of aiding the Japanese somehow because you can't trust merchants
>midnight on the North Sea, Dogger Bank off the East Coast of England

>suddenly, the supply freighter Kamchatka signals that she is under attack by torpedo boats
>PANIC.jpg
>entire fleet comes about and steams straight into save their comrade, guns blazing
>the cruisers Aurora and Dmitri Donskoy are misidentified as Japanese and hit repeatedly by friendly fire, killing a sailor and a ship's chaplain
>numerous cruisers report being hit by torpedoes, begin emergency maneuvers
>the battleship Borodino reports being boarded by Japanese forces, crew attempt to abandon ship

>20 minutes of panicked firing later, someone signals to cease fire
>searchlights illuminate a tiny cluster of unarmed, severely distressed British fishing trawlers, one slowly sinking
>three Englishmen dead
>oops
>Russian fleet decides to just keep sailing and pretend nothing happened

>next morning, trawlers limp home, the Royal Navy absolutely flips their shit and raises steam on the entire Channel Fleet
>suddenly the Russians find their six-battleship fleet being pursued by TWENTY-EIGHT battleships
>surrounded and forced to park off Spain until St. Petersburg finally apologizes and gives Britain enough money not to sink their entire navy as revenge

If you're counting, you'll have noticed that the Russians only managed a 2:3 kill ratio against unarmed fishermen. The Oryol fired 500 shells and hit nothing.

This is the fleet they expected to save Vladivostok from the Japanese.

>fleet preparing to set sail, when a mysterious submarine is found in a crate aboard an American clipper
>base goes on full alert because it must be an attempted Japanese sneak attack!!!
>turns out the Russian Admiralty bought a submarine but forgot to tell anyone in the fleet or the port authority

>Bongs finally let the fleet go after holding them hostage at Tangiers under the guns of half the RN
>Circumnavigating the Cape of Good Hope, support freighters and transports keep falling out due to mechanical failure

>Baltic Fleet finally reaches Madagascar, only to find a message ordering them to hold there indefinitely

>turns out the Admiralty decided to dispatch reinforcements (all old, broken-down ships which the fleet commander had explicitly refused) with orders to "Locate the Baltic Fleet, whose course and heading are unknown to us..."

>2 months sitting in port at Madagascar in summertime
>all crews are confined to ships the whole time
>malaria everywhere
>four different Torpedo Destroyers lost to mechanical failures just from sitting at anchor
>three separate mutinies by pissed off, diseased crewmen

>reinforcements still not there
>decide to hold gunnery practice
>every single battleship misses their targets on every salvo
>exactly one hit scored, on the tug towing the target ship
>gunnery practice is aborted early because it turns out the Admiralty didn't issue enough ammunition for the battleships, while Kamchatka suddenly starts signaling that she's sinking for no reason and one of the cruisers has to stop practice because of a "very large snake" wrapped around the breech of their fore battery

>dozens of crew dead of malaria, decide to hold funeral at sea
>Borodino accidentally uses live ammunition for the salute
>hits the Aurora, again

>reinforcements finally arrive
>ur fucked now, cyka nips
>Tsushima ensues
>>
