Tell me if this is common knowledge and I'm just retarded for thinking I figured something out, but could the Roman Empire have transferred all of their power and opulence, ability to rule over mankind, into what became the Holy Roman Catholic Church? This seems like a no brainer for me as to what happened after the Fall of Rome, but what do you guys think?
>>2968679
Is being the heir to the Roman Empire the Western equivalent of the Mandate of Heaven?
>>2968679
It's not that the Catholic church is a heir of the Roman empire.
It's simply the Catholic church is a remanent, a survivor, an element of the Roman empire that was not erased.
It's like if the USA is dismantled and replaced by new countries with new cultures. But they kept the wacky American Christian churches such as baptists, Mormons, Jehovah's witnesses, etc.
what was the most effectiv or creativ way to defend your city against conquest in the high or late middle age
>>2968645
Build a massive wall.
do somebody know what kind of defense wall this construct under the have is?

>what was the most effectiv or creativ way to defend your city against conquest in the high or late middle age
Brave men are a city's strongest tower of defence
How much did fighting in an Ancient Greek war as someone in a phalanx (I don't know my terminology but you get the jest) actually come down to skill.
Was their room between you and your enemy for you to dodge and block, or was it just hundreds of men tightly pressed up against each other pushing swords into each others bellies. Wouldn't the bodies create like a wall between the two sides, did they make an initial impact and then back away for more skilled one on one fighting? Or just straight up a meat blender?
>>2968639
Nobody knows exactly how it worked, educated guesses are the best we can do, but no, they never separated for one-on-one fighting. The whole point was to break the other phalanx. Once that was accomplished the battle was essentially over.
>>2968703
This. Phalanges are vulnerable from the sides and rear, thus breaking formation was literal suicide.
Straight on blender. Packing more depth into one wing let you overwhelm the enemy routing them and letting you flank the other wing. One on one fighting was shit they did back in the bronze age like in Illiad, though even later on in Hellenic period badasses like Pyrrhus accepted one on one fights. Why? Who knows. Champion combat in Greek world was done in the olympics and other games.
For me, it's Karl Marx
>>2968627
They called him Moor for a reason
>>2968627
is Karl Marx black?
>>2968643
He wasn't black but his slavic background gave him somewhat asian looking features. He wasnt as dark in most pictures as he is in OPs pic. His asian facial features and the darkness of the photo makes him look darker than he usually does.
Is pension system/social security a literal pyramid scheme?
>>2968585
take from the young and give to the old , sounds like a scam to me
>>2968585
Literally a Ponzi scheme. Take from new members and give to old ones. The system will last as long as there are more new entrants than old members.
This means the first world will always strive to increase population one way or the other. And first workers have massively larger carbon footprints.
Ironically, leftist policy killed the world.
>>2968585
Social Security was set up by Roosevelt to be self funding, in fact the SS fund actually had a surplus for a long time, he was very concerned about not borrowing against the future to pay for the present. It wasn't until decades later after its creation that Congress changed the rules and took money that was earmarked for SS and used it to pay for other things.
what are the best resources to learn Latin?
especially the modern variant used as lingua franca during the Reinassance
>>2968482
I know memrise has Latin, but I've never used them. I'm learning classical Latin at a university.
>>2968482
The common method of 'learning' Latin strictly by analysis, memorising declensions, how the rules of Latin relate to the rules of english and how to mechanically anglicise Latin sentences (aka grammar-translation) is pure meme invented by g*rmans, doesn't work, and is a great way to ensure you never develop reading fluency. If you find yourself having to convert a latin sentence to English in order to understand it then you have probably been memed on.
The only practical method to learn latin is by massive amounts of comprehensible input. The other method is by communication - used from the roman period up to the 1870s, but is sadly impractical now due to a lack of speakers.
Renaissance Latin - neo-Latin - is a reaction to the 'impure' mediaeval Latin and is consciously and heavily classicised, thus you learn standard classical Latin in order to learn neo-latin. Classical Latin is what underpins all forms of Latin and has by far the most beginners resources.
The currently best textbook to learn Latin is the Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata (LLPSI) series. You can find the pdfs for part 1 and 2 through google if you don't want to commit to buying yet. You need to supplement this with as much understandable latin as you can find search 'libri scholastici vivarium novum' for a selection few dozen beginners books, but be aware that there are far more out there if you go searching.

Were mongols right about pressing surrended enemies into military service?
That's how hoardes work. Wtf do you mean 'right'? Ask an actual question if you want an actual discussion.
>>2968373
Yes probably, I think most people would get used to it and find comradeship with their new allies pretty fast.
>>2968697
>find comradeship with their new allies
Hordes tend to fall apart pretty quickly
How the fuck did people identify who is friend or foe in civil wars?
Especially in wars where you're up against a bunch of your own military rebelling.
Everyone would be wearing the same uniforms as you guys.
>>2968357
This is yet another reason why strict formations were so damn important.
Wherre they are running from
In small units which is how fighting occurs you recognize your lads and strangers and who leads you etc
>>2968357
Usually, its pretty easy to tell rebels since they fly the symbol of whatever they are fighting for: ideology, religious belief, a dynastic claim, or some shit.
Rebel groups tend to establish IFF very quickly in order not to accidentally their own guys in battles.
For example: this is why almost every uprising in Chinese history is known as *insert color of headgear* rebellion. The Way of Peace famously had Yellow Turbans, The Anti-Yuan and the Taiping wore red.
Feudalshits have it easy since they just sport the colors, sigils, or arms of their lords or some shit.
The eternal anglo is a stones throw away from a Jew while Nazism is anti-Jewish.
the difference is the 6 million murdered jews
The Anglos defended Christendom.
The G*rmanic defiled it.
