could the U.S. conquer Switzerland?
44 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
We're not so different, I think it would be a great challenge, if they were in fact our only adversary then of course conquest could be achieved due to superior numbers, production capacity, ect.
>>
Yes.

The real question is whether it would take more or less than a week to do.

Who are the most and least reliable Historians of antiquity?

I've read and heard that it's generally accepted that Polybius is the most reliable, but are there others that don't need as much caution as say Livy or Herodotus?

At most the stories rhyme, definitely not the same.

For instance how would you guys rate these historians/chroniclers

Yes, this is true. Communism is a form of socialism never implemented because it is a utopian fantasy.
>>

But people still believe in that utopia.

>>2982098
Yeah, and people believe a magic sky wizard either eternally punish or reward you for your actions on earth and act accordingly.

How good was Caesar as a military leader? And how much did his subordinates, specifically Labienus and Antony, help him?

pretty good desu
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Pharsalus
>>
>>2982021
Caesar was an excellent military leader. He fought plenty of battles as the sole general of any repute. Anthony was just a shitty kid for most of Caesar's military career and Labienus got absolutely rekt by Caesar when they met in battle.
He's in the top tier of roman generals. There are some others with more spectaculars victories like Marius and Scipio, but Caesar was all around extremely solid and an absolute master of sieges and mobility.
>>
>>2982021
>And how much did his subordinates, specifically Labienus and Antony, help him?
Labienus spent most of his service under Caesar leading independent commands raiding belgae and germans. If anything it's Pompey who got carried by Labienus during the civil war.
Anthony was more Caesar's aide/lieutenant than any sort of strategist. He himself certainly doesn't have a particularly impressive record as a general on his own.

Hello, /his/

I propose we organize a basic reading chart for Law.

Nothing specific that works only for American Law Students, lets keep it related to the General Theory of Law, Philosophy of Law and International Law.

For example, I suggest "The Pure Theory of Law" by Kelsen, "Discourses on Titu Livius" by Machiavelli, and "The RIghts of War and Peace" by Grotius as a beginning.

More so, I think we shouldn't "waste" space by mentioning the fundamental Greek classics such as "The Republic" by Plato or anything by Aristotle. Those are required reading for pretty much anything. Cicero, on the other hand, is something we should consider.

What do you think?

Legal theory was the hardest exam for me.
Harder than contracts, harder than criminal procedure, harder than roman law.

What i find fascinating is different legal systems and their approach to contracts and property.
Is there a comprehensive book about Germany's over reliance (in my mind) on the cadastre vs the French "lol, as soon as you sign the contract it's yours, have fun at court with the other 7 people he sold the house to"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Average_European

"Not all the languages listed above show all the listed features, so membership in SAE can be described as gradient. Based on nine of the above-mentioned common features, Haspelmath regards French and German as forming the nucleus of the Sprachbund, surrounded by a core formed by English, the other Romance languages, the Nordic languages, and the Western and Southern Slavic languages. Hungarian, the Baltic languages, the Eastern Slavic languages, and the Finnic languages form more peripheral groups.[6] All languages identified by Haspelmath as core SAE are Indo-European languages. However, not all Indo-European languages are SAE languages: the Celtic, Armenian, and Indo-Iranian languages remain outside the SAE Sprachbund.[7]"

Why would Celtic languages not adopt the SAE features? Anyone knowledgeable on this? Pic sort of related.
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Did you not read the article you posted?

>The Standard Average EuropeanSprachbundis most likely the result of ongoinglanguage contact in the time of theMigration Period and later, continuing during theMiddle Agesand theRenaissance. Inheritance of the SAE features fromProto-Indo-Europeancan be ruled out because Proto-Indo-European, as currently reconstructed, lacked most of the SAE features.
>>
>>2981938
Right, but Celtic languages would have come into contact with lots of Germanic/Romance speakers during the Migration Period, Middle Ages, and Renaissance.
>>
>>2981946
Not in a huge scale. Their languages stayed largely localized. Nobody outside of their small area would speak their language especially into the middle ages and Renaissance, and as you can see from the migration period of Anglo-Saxons, Celtic languages didn't survive to well of the British isles save for isolated areas.

Very legitimate, Qur'an says to follow the Messenger of Allah and that means to follow Sunnah, hadith is just what the Messenger of Allah said.
It was compiled after the death of the prophet and narrated from only trustworthy people, the same people who compiled Qur'an accepted hadith narrations, also Allah (SWT) said he would never mislead the majority of Muslims, so Ahlus Sunnah (The main body of Muslims) are correct for that and many other reasons (mainly we have the most objectively correct positions on things).

And about the shi'a vs. Sunni, you should watch this debate, if you're a non Muslim it might go over your head a bit but you could easily understand most of it.

I'm not talking about superficial things like language, or things that actually originated in Syria in the Late Empire. I mean actual ancient Roman advancements that changed the world. It seems there isn't anything in terms of science, technology, or culture. Is there anything else?

The one thing that is regularly brought up is law. Not the legal system, but rather individual laws, specifically relating to corporate law, which were adopted in medieval Western Europe from the codex of Justinian. But do those even date back to ancient Rome, or are they actually Greek/Byzantine?

Did China really need all that extra territory the Qing conquered to add to what the Ming dynasty already controlled? Would modern China be better off without large empty undeveloped places like Inner Mongolia, Tibet, and Xinjiang being a drain on the economy?
