Was Pearl Harbor really that injurious? Even today, americans talk about it like one of the most perfidious attack ever. We know the tensions were high and that the americans knew the japanese were about to attack.
This "day of infamy" just seem huge propaganda to hide the fact the Japanese scored a huge tactical victory over the US, and that american intelligence had completly fucked up. So why so many people still believe in this myth?
>>2996103
it nearly destroyed the pacific fleet , even though that cocksucker FDR caused it
it still hurt
They were mainly pissed that the US got pulled out of peacetime and into war.
It represented the beginning of a war which killed 400,000 Americans, a war which the United States didn't start
>inb4 oil embargo
>inb4 can't inb4
>>2996103
>Was Pearl Harbor really that injurious?
Not really, no. 4 battleships were sunk but 3 of them were later raised, and to be honest, all of the BB at Pearl were obsolescent vessels; if the Japanese had completely pulverized all 8, it probably wouldn't have changed much about how the war went.
>Even today, americans talk about it like one of the most perfidious attack ever.
The level of perfidy in an attack has little to do with how strategically crippling it is.
>We know the tensions were high and that the americans knew the japanese were about to attack.
OP, just because tensions are high and people might be expecting an attack doesn't mean that it won't be harshly decried if it happens. Tensions were high with Al-Queda in the early 2000s, and while shocking, it's not like the Twin Tower or Pentagon attacks crippled America's military capabilities. You have noticed how nasty a reaction that got, and how much America mobilized to stamp out "terrorism" in its aftermath, right?
Really makes you think.

Better than requiring religion for morality rather than simply being moral, but he has no right to talk shit.
Why is that only Europe developed small local identities? I use the HRE as an example because it's borders help me with the point I'm trying to make but the same could be applied to larger European empires like the British, French, Spain they just accepted to unite under their common identity quicker then the Germans. Now try to find the idea of local identities in the Ottoman empire, whatever Chinese empire, what evidence is there of any sort of patriotism for ones town, village, city etc, it's non existent.
Is this what made Europe better than the rest of the world?
Feudalism. A local count/duke/whatever had more influence on a particular place than the king did. This didn't happen as much outside of Europe.

Was this the beginning of the end for Poland-Lithuania?
How can you get so utterly fucked by everyone?
>During the wars the Commonwealth lost approximately one third of its population as well as its status as a great power.According to Professor Andrzej Rottermund, manager of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, the destruction of Poland in the deluge was more extensive than the destruction of the country in World War II. As Rottermund claims, Swedish invaders robbed the Commonwealth of its most important riches, and most of the stolen items never returned to Poland. Warsaw, the capital of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, was completely destroyed by the Swedes, and out of a pre-war population of 20,000, only 2,000 remained in the city after the war. According to the 2012 Polish estimates, financial losses of Poland are estimated at 4 billion zlotys. Swedish invaders completely destroyed 188 cities and towns, 81 castles, and 136 churches in Poland.

How would a large-scale conflict be fought today? I imagine close air support and other sorts of indirect fire would play a greater role.
Also, should I evade the draft if such a conflict did break out?

>How would a large-scale conflict be fought today?
Between who? This entire question is so broad that it has no meaningful answer.

Even if the conflict doesn't go nuclear, the war will be effectively over in a matter of days if not weeks.
Modern weapons are extremely lethal and extremely mobile, but the industry to produce them has very low throughput and very high footprint.
Whichever side that still has it's modern arsenal somewhat intact after first contact will be able to run roughshod over whatever is left of the enemy, and there's just not enough time to mobilize untrained personnel and turn them into an effective fighting force. Even if they could be trained to satisfaction, there's not enough heavy equipment to make them effective in anything more than defending urban areas/be partisans. The war will be effectively over before you even make it to your conscription depot.
In your opinion, what nation had the greatest mythology?
Based on narrative and aesthetics, I'd say Rome.
Obviously Greece and Rome. Contrarians are going to cite some more "exotic" one, but let them.
>>2995858
Aztec. That thicc story was based
>>2995858
rome if you want to talk about founding myth, national/tribal myth. the link with troy and aeneas, the descent from mars, the twin brothers,... is beautiful and strong.
but if you are talking about purely mythology the hellenes reign supreme.
the iliad is in my opinion still a work of absolute perfection.
also the enormous amount of it makes it incredible. the iliad, the odyssey, metamorphosen compiled by ovid, Oedipus tragedy, the argonauts, Heracles, perseus, theseus, the titans, the gigants,...

one must bear in mind , at the time he burnt Mt Hiei , the fanatical armies he fought were manipulated by power hungry Buddhist leaders (who were no different from other daimyos, in fact probably worse because they hid their true motives to their followers ) , and at that time he burnt Mt Hiei (1571) Nobunaga was surrounded by hostile factions allied against him and looking to completely crush him , he was actually in a precarious position , and had to somehow show his strength to avoid a general rebellion in Kyoto .
Later on he had to fight them (Kennyo's warrior monks ) for 10 years and lost thousands and thousands of men , proposed them many agreements which were not honoured and later on when Nobunaga was almost Japan 's ruler , they were sill a threat to peace and stability , because aside from being allied to clans hostile to Oda , they could attract thousands of armed men to fight for their cause with a level of fanaticism and readiness to die whilst taking in death with them as many as possible , which greatly impressed Oda generals and affected the morale of Oda's soldiers . Also they were no poor and could count on donations and " free upkeep" religious soldiers which wasn't the case for Oda . Also had Oda not crushed them , they'd have been a long term menace on Nobunaga's rule , once he burnt MT Hiei on a sort of whim (which he probably regretted later on ) , then he was stuck to "finish the job" , he had to completely wipe them out at that point because it was clear that as long as they stood strong , they would be a long term menace for him and especially his successors and son , and not just a political threat , but a religious one which is much more dangerous on the long term

No, the American race is the master race, for now.

We've gone through this a few days ago, Austria could not unify the Germans because every non-German ethnicity inside the empire was against it and it wasn't in Franz Joseph's interest to let go of the parts of the empire not part of the German confederacy and not rule over them directly.

Destruction of kafir heresy.
Am I the only one who feels some kind of disdain for Pure Land Buddhism? It sounds nice on paper, and I certainly find the cosmology to be interesting: however, the idea seems so intellectually lazy when compared to other Buddhist traditions.
>"this world is so terrible, we can't ever reach Enlightenment on our own, why even bother trying?"
>"welp, let's pray to this fanfic-tier celestial Buddha that he'll let us be reborn in his Heaven-realm and literally hand-hold us into nirvana"
All Buddhist sects are fan-fic. The Buddha was nothing more than a wandering skeptic and moral philosopher of the likes of Diogenes and Epicurus. In India there's no separation between religion and philosophy. If Plato or Aristotle had been born in India their schools would have undoubted have become religious sects, with their followers attributing every sort of miracle and apocryphal text to them. The Mahayana tradition is the worst when it comes to making stuff up.
>look at this manuscript I found containing the "secret teachings" of the Buddha, a thousand years after the Buddha's death and written in Chinese
>>2995316
You think Mahayana is bad, look at Vajrayana.
Theravada is the only acceptable school, and even then-
>>2995285
Except it's an entirely orthodox concept:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An%C4%81g%C4%81mi
In either case Adi-Buddha is slightly more common in the Vajrayana traditions that straight Mahayana; and even then it's most often referring to, again, an orthodox concept:

Wait, what?
According to most of the Tibetan schools the only valid goal is achieving Liberation as quickly as possible. "One who aspires to become buddha as soon as possible and then help sentient beings in full fledge."
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso notes:
>In reality, the second two types of bodhicitta are wishes that are impossible to fulfill because it is only possible to lead others to enlightenment once we have attained enlightenment ourself. Therefore, only king-like bodhicitta is actual bodhicitta. Je Tsongkhapa says that although the other Bodhisattvas wish for that which is impossible, their attitude is sublime and unmistaken.
Why do you think Heidegger suggested studying Aristotle for ten to fifteen years before approaching Nietzsche?
Because Germans are extremely conscientious.
The composer Richard Strauss advised his students that they should read and learn by heart all music scores by Wagner before they even wrote a string quartet!
So you can see Nietzsche is totally devoid of methodology or rigor. Nietzsche is quite useful as a "really makes you think" philosopher, but noobs get carried away sometimes and start taking his armchair psychology and proto tweets as Gospel
Because just about everyone misunderstands what Nietzsche means, especially the God is dead part
I literally do not know dick about the Ottoman Empire. Where do I begin?
Ask yourself where did the Turks come from. Go from there.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manzikert
founded by a guy called Osman, most of the middle east was already thoroughly raped by previous Turks and Mongols and a bit by crusades so they just slipped in the power vacuum taking out the Byzantine Empire (last vestige of the Roman empire) and quickly taking over the place with an army of specially trained Christian slaves called Janissaries.
From there they start raping Eastern Europe, Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Egypt. It took a collation of Germans, Poles, and Slavs to stop them at Vienna but they kept the Balkans until the 19th century which messed up the Balkans quite a bit. They hit their peak at Suleiman the Magnificent and afterwards had all the same problems the Byzantines had with political takeover by Eunuchs, military takeovers, family clusterfucks, and Germans and Russians. From a look of fear to a look of pity they get pulled left and right by European powers until they went into WWI to get some prestige but ended up losing everything
