>>My first course in philosophy was nothing less than a summary of the important systems of thought put forward in Western Europe during the last twenty-six hundred years. Perhaps that is a slight exaggeration--we did gloss over a few centuries in the Middle Ages. For the rest we touched upon all the historic names from Thales to Nietzsche. After about nine weeks of this bewildering transit a friend approached me with a sour look on his face. "You know," he said, "I can't make head or tail out of this business. I agree with each philosopher as we study him. But when we get to the next one, I agree with him too. Yet he generally says the other one was wrong. They can't all be right. Can they now?" I was too much puzzled with the same difficulty to help him.

Yeah, maybe it'll take you more than nine weeks of an introductory course to form your own opinion on the nature of this universe, morality and knowledge itself.

The answer is simple - OP is a fag

Not everyone cares about philosophy. They may unwittingly be influenced by a philosophers theories, but it ends there.

How do you win hearts and minds?

Why is there a giant thumb-up hovering over southeastern Iraq and obscuring its border?
>>
>>3022055

First, you have to actually believe your system of ideas is superior to the one you oppose. No Western state or politician believes this, therefore nothing they do will convince anyone to adopt their ideas. But it is possible to win hearts and minds, IF you have the iron-clad certainty in the superiority of your system, as for example happened in post war Germany and Japan.

Why were American ships so lacking in firepower compared to their Soviet counter-parts?

>>
>>3021896
Because their carrier wing was better.
>>
>>3021896

There's another ship nearby that does it's specialized job much better.

Instead of a Kiev that has half-assed aviation, bolt on SAM, and a handful of missiles, you have a Nimitz that has full fledged aviation and a Ticonderoga that has full fledged air defense.
>>
>>3021896
The striking power of an American fleet is primarily in its aircraft carriers. The surface combatants exist to protect the carriers, not to attack enemy surface combatants. Therefore the average US warship is built around some specific role in a carrier group like ASW or air defense. Of course, US surface combatants are still capable of fighting other ships, it just isn't their primary mission.
The huge resources allocated to the USN also allowed them to build multiple ships to fill different roles rather than one ship to fill every role.

What did Gorbachev do wrong?

In my view, if he was going to attempt reforms, he needed to go further. He tried to meander between reform and keeping the Soviet Union, which just alienated both sides and lead to collapse

He was somewhat friendly with the United States and Russians HATE Americans
>>
>>3021825
While he externally did a lot of retarded shit (conceding a lot to US/NATO while not having them concede much in return), I don't view that as being too related to why the Soviet Union collapsed
>>

First of all you should determine his goals. If it was breakup - he was excellent.

Any thoughts on this /his/?

I wrote this:

Redpill on architecture. I don't know what to take from this honestly. Do we promote buiildings that allow individuality? Like the philosophy of houses in neighborhoods to the degree they are allowed individualism? Is there a line? We can't argue that neighborhoods or even tower apartments haven't changed our society. A good debate should be on this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GapUEKYLE1o

Perhaps architecture needs a broader look at how the building helps humans live? Like more aesthetic reasons? There needs to be unity of design? Maybe there should be themes of city with individualism inside that theme. Because there is a promotion of thematics it helps the mental aspect of being human in a big city?
>>
While he has some points, I can't get over the whole "angry rant" ridiculous approach he has, and how that lunatic believes that postmodern is some kind of secret government program to turn us into submissive slaves.
I don't like a lot of newer architecture just like I don't like postmodernist art. But that guy clearly just watched a couple of documentaries and acts outraged.

Buddha sat under a tree at the age of 29, and after 6 years at the age of 35 he became 'enlightened'. He then wandered the earth for over 40 years until he died.

Are we supposed to believe he didn't become more enlightened over time? Buddhism teaches that everything changes, but apparently the Buddha's mind was static?

How should I learn reading latin?

I don't want to be able to talk latin, I just want to be able to read and understand. I was thinking of buying ORBERG's lingua latina,is that a good choice?
How long should it take before I can read a real text?
I studied latin for 6 years in school but that was mostly grammatica and translating sentences, that's not how you learn to read a language
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>3021204
also my first language is french but my english is pretty decent and I have some notions in dutch so learning a new language should not be an issue in itself and french / english allow me to easily understand simple sentences in latin
>>
>>3021204
learn the dialect and meter of ancient texts (dactylic hexameter) and learn how to look at latin sentences holistically instead of linearly. Vocab will take time, but looking at entire sentences and lines as constructions rather than strings of connected ideas helps with understanding the language
>>
>>3021257
you mean focusing on getting the general idea instead of focusing on every word?

If you are planning to visit the museums (there are good ones here and there), if could be helpful to learn about different periods (even if briefly). Some knowledge of Soviet period can also help to understand stations. Most of the other things in the Moscow worthy of note are Orthodox churches and obviously Kremlin.

>"The separation between the doctrine of life and the explanation of life began with the preaching of Paul who knew not the ethical teachings set forth in the Gospel of Matthew, and who preached a metaphisico-cabalistic theory entirely foreign to Christ; and this separation was perfected in the time of Constantine, when it was found possible to clothe the whole pagan organization of life in a Christian dress, and without changing it to call it Christianity." What if the Germans had pushed forward at Dunkirk and had a huge number of British POWs to bargain with.

Let's say they also secured the French fleet.

Then, instead of antagonizing England with bombing, Hitler tries for peace.

He doesn't waste time and resources preparing to attack so there are more aircraft and trucks for Barbarossa.

Let's say also that Germany focused more on truck production early and has another 40-80,000 trucks for their supply lines.

Then, on the eve of Barbarossa Hitler pledges to his generals not to override their best judgement in the field as he did in real life.

After this he goes to his office because he feels sick. His skin turns gray and scaley. His arms begin to contract into his torso, while his legs fuse together and begin to lengthen.

Desperately, he writes down everything that is happening until his now scale covered hand slips into his torso.

What was once the furher of Germany is now a long slender creature of significant girth. He retains all his memories and intellect and could convince the high command who he was.

Does the invasion of Russia work this time?
