Wow, that's painted in 1761? There weren't any baroque guitar or lute composers around anymore. This painting must refer back to one or two generations before these children.

Why 13th/14th century Artists were obsessed about drawing knights fighting snails?

Some kind of forgotten medieval meme?
24 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Symbol for gluttony.
>>
The first meme. Some artist may have done it to represent a royal house he didn't like or maybe he did it just because snails were the most pathetic creature he could think of and thus thought it was funny to draw a knight fighting one. Either way, other artists started doing it themselves just because he did it and the rest is history.
>>
removing pests like snails was a common task for children and they might be invited to collect snails from a garden in exchange for keeping them (as food)

snail shells are like armor

Any else ever do a roman salute in public and be confused as a nazi? I've never been punched but the worst came from a girl who walked up to me and started going at me. Everyone looked at me. I tried to explain it to her but she wouldn't have it.

>Any else ever do a roman salute in public
No.
>>
>>3053525
The Romans never did a salute like that. It was made up by painters during the Romantic Era. It was started by Jacques-Louis David's painting The Oath of the Horatii (1784).
>However, this description is unknown in Roman literature and is never mentioned by ancient historians of Rome. Not a single Roman work of art, be it sculpture, coinage, or painting, displays a salute of this kind. The gesture of the raised right arm or hand in Roman and other ancient cultures that does exist in surviving literature and art generally had a significantly different function and is never identical with the modern straight-arm salute.
http://www.liquisearch.com/roman_salute/early_roman_sources_and_images

Closest I can come up with is Trajan's Column but soldiers do all sort of variations of that salute. So with that it may not even be a salute but something else entirely.

Also a lot of neo-nazis or white nationalist(I know that they are different) like to say they are doing the roman salute and not the Heil Hitler as wesel excuse. So I would not do that salute if you are in just plain clothes. Would only do it at reenactments if that's the salute they use there. From what I know the real salute was the right arm against the chest, but I am not entirely sure and if other known for certain should correct me on this or you should look into it.
>>
what the fuck? who actually does this?
btw chances are that romans didnt salute with their arm like that

Did the historical character of Jesus not get along with his parents?

There are no recorded interactions between him and his father. He doesn't even come to see his son before he gets killed.

Mary attempts to visit Jesus once in Mathew 12 and Jesus refuses to speak to her and implies that she is not even his real mother because she doesn't follow his religion. She appears again when his sentence is being carried out and the two of them do not speak.

No other interactions between them are recorded.

With these as the only sources I can't see how you could come to the conclusion he had a positive relationship with his parents.

Catharism was so successful at converting Catholics that they called a crusade to stop it so id say it was on to someting

Some of the things from the ways they carried out their activities could be useful and perhaps put into practice.

"They all have access equally, they all listen equally, they all pray equally - even pagans if they happen to come… They also share the kiss of peace with all who come." (Tertullian Prescription Against Heretics 41) Anybody who came to a meeting was seen as potentially spiritual and was made welcome. While newcomers would not have been allowed to address the group, any of the full initiates could be invited to speak based on drawing lots (Irenaeus Against Heresies 1:13:3).

Valentinian initiates took turns performing the various liturgical tasks ensuring a high degree of participation by the membership. According to Tertullian, "Today one man is bishop and tomorrow another; the person who is a deacon today, tomorrow is a reader; the one who is a priest is a layman tomorrow. For even on the laity they impose the functions of priesthood." ( Tertullian Against the Valentinians 1) He goes on to relate that even women could take the role of bishop, much to his horror.

Gnostic ideas are little more then very poor derivatives of (Neo-) Platonism.

The most important distinction being that rather then attempting to gain a greater level of understanding and closeness with the trace of the One within them.
Gnostics have historically instead cursed their own existence, in such a manner that 'suicide cult' would literally be the best term to describe most historical Gnostic movements.

In fairness to the Cathars.
Their own interpretation of Galilean theology is second only to Marcion and their ability to live by their theological beliefs were second to none.

Yeah, Japan was the ultimate paper tiger. They lasted about six months against the U.S. before getting utterly annihilated at Midway. Their soldiers were great at raping peasants but against organized opposition they were about as effective as the Italians.

Yeah that's why the Allied army in Southeast Asia could fend off the Japanese invasion, right? Oh wait.

So I herd an interesting theory in the other thread before le autistic French ruined it.
It said that all western European aristocracy and nobles stem from Germanic origin.
Like during migration age, Germanic tribes conquered everything that was left of the west roman empire and made themselves at home.
Lombards took Italy, Visigoths took Spain, Franks took France (and Belgium and the Netherlands and Alemanni took what is today southern Germany/Switzerland.
All those societies where tribal, early feudal and Germanic, and so all the noble families where of Germanic origin.
Due to class laws, clear distinction between Germanics and Romans, hugely favoring the formers and constant intermarriage the Germanics (now culturally adapted to their new homes) made themselves the ruling class, and this system kept on going up to the French revolution.
Is this true? Did Germanics really take over all of western Europe?

Not so sure, there is plenty of Polish, Sorbiana and Silesian noble houses who seem to be of Slavic origin. The Russian Rurik dynasty might have some Germanic in them.
The Frankish empire on the other hand had only nobles of Germanic origin as far as I know.
>>
Patrilineally, it is most probable, excepting of course Hungarian and Slavic aristocracy intermarrying with Germans in HRE.

Matrilineally it is most doubtful.

Why do modern day neo-nazis claim that third reich hatred against slavs and generalplan ost was fake?

Especially since the most arguments goes like "generalplan ost was fake because i said so"

Why cant nazis just accept that Hitler wasnt a perfect representant of their views?

They actually do think that Generalplan Ost was a good idea and that the Holocaust happened but made the world better.

But they think Slavs are necessary as allies in the present day despite their inferiority and that their ideology would look better if the Holocaust did not happen.

Realistically, what might Mexico be like if Maximilian had stayed emperor of Mexico? Presuming few other "points of divergence" from our own timeline (possibly just having the American Civil War last longer), how different would Mexico be?

Would Mexico have been a Franco-Austrian puppet? Without Porfirio Diaz, would Mexico have developed a more equal economy?
