Dunno if anyone here is into facial reconstruction but the technology has just gotten craaazy

this is a 3D reconstruction of 4 individuals that were exhumed from a burial site in shíshálh Nation territory, Salish Sea region of British Columbia (remains were returned to the nation afterward) aka DjRw-14. Calibrated carbon dates for these 4 individuals places them in the Charles period (4500 - 3500 BP). The man was buried with some 350,000 stone disc beads + 1,000 disc shells beads which suggests that material wealth-based inequality arose in Coast Salish society much earlier than previously thought (i.e., the 'Marpole first' hypothesis)... The woman and the two adolescent males were also buried with a shit tonne of beads, but the adult male had like 6 or 7 times as many (he was buried under a 5 cm thick deposit of the things)

Anyways. This shit is cool.

Bumping: just to put this into context, to make the 350,000 beads = approx. 3,500 man hours to produce. Not including the time it would take to acquire the materials + the time needed to make/re-sharpen the manufacturing tools

Look at this gem ive come across.
A double hand rifle owner by the queen victoria herself circa 1880.
The precision, symmetric, and detailed handle realt shows how sophisticated life was back in the day, And how much they cared and put time into all the little details.
Truly magnificent and outstanding work.

Why is Israel such a big talking point in American politics?
Why, historically, does the US have close relations with Israel?

Israel is a Rorschach test for people's views about things like race, religion, national security, and foreign affairs.

The US started backing them during the Cold War as a counterweight to Soviet backing of the Arabs in the region.

In the late 70s the US won a bidding war with the Soviet Union and bought the Arabs as well, and now it pays Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan to be its friends and not go to war with one another.

Also, Arab leaders use Israel to deflect from the endemic failure of governments in the region to provide services.

Well like most countries, around the 1950's america and canada held their embassy in the old capital of isreal.

shouldn't there actually be some evidence of the ruins of this great structure if it had existed? I mean it was this towering building threatening to reach into the clouds. It must have been massive. Furthermore all that was supposedly done to it was that it was left in a state of disrepair because the people building it couldn't communicate. So seriously where the fuck is it?

probably about the only thing in the beginning of genesis that I think actually was just a parable, being about the neobabylonian empire (babel). obviously in the context of genesis it's not, but the story could have existed before it was put in genesis

Terrible because God contrary to popular belief is pure evil and he hates humans, as made evident in Genesis: Instead of showing his loving and forgiving side, as soon as Adam and Eve fucked up, God punished humanity with eternal suffering. It took his own Son's death to convince him otherwise, but even then, it's still kinda debatable since he resurrected.

Mutually assured destruction is probably the best guess and that both the Soviets and NATO weren't run by a bunch of lunatics. Also for the fact that if the war didn't go nuclear until a few weeks later, expect hundreds of thousands of NATO/Soviet and Warpact casualties.

So there's something that's been bothering me about the idea of purgatory. As I understand it, it's a place where souls go that aren't good enough to go to heaven, nor evil enough to go to hell. There, they suffer for a certain amount of time to cleanse themselves of sin, before being accepted into heaven. My question is, how is this not just downright torture? Individuals go through an intense amount of pain, until their souls are filled with the "right" kind of character, before being allowed to enter utopia. In what is this concept different than the one of repressive torture? And before you say "people aren't forced into purgatory, they choose to go there" may I remind you that the alternative involves eternal suffering and pain, so I'm pretty sure every sane man would pick torture for a while over torture for eternity.

why do people consider Dantes Divine Comedy as some kind of doctrinal book?
Purgatory is a place where your sinful tendencies are burned out. Not literally. If you are there, you are already saved - but not enough good to go and see God. Even more - it's not God's decision, but yours. You yourself WANT to peel away that pride, greed and egoism before you can sit near your heavenly Father. That doesn't mean that you are far from Him - you KNOW that He is near you and is welcoming you into His kingdom. In some way, Purgatory can be viewed as a layer of Heaven - those there are already saved.

>s I understand it, it's a place where souls go that aren't good enough to go to heaven, nor evil enough to go to hell
Then you understand it wrongly. Purgatory is a place where people who are already saved by Jesus' sacrifice and through faith and holy sacraments still have to face results of their sins if they didn't repent from them during their earthly life.

>how is this not just downright torture?
Facing results of your actions is a torture if you were a hencham yourself.

So there's something that's been bothering me about the idea of the Krusty Krab. As I understand it, it's a place where fish go that want to buy Krabby patties. There, they eat for a certain amount of time to relieve themselves of hunger, before driving home in their boat car. My question is, how is this not just downright crazy? How the hell can a car work underwater? how can they use ovens and fire underwater? In what is this concept different than explosions in space? And before you say "fuck off, it's a kid's cartoon you aspie" may I remind you that this is History AND Humanities?

Well, most of it was built after the Civil War ended, so no. Even before than, it's not like slaves were highly trained stone masons and engineers.

We've all heard the meme about how Christianity repressed one thousand years of technology.

But this got me wondering: what are some times when technology actually was repressed in a serious way that prevented it from growing for a long, long time? Whether it be a religious reason or a political one.

I have an additional question, but this is a little harder to convey. Do you think the overall development of science and technology progressed "logically"? Imagine if Newton never existed. Do you think someone in his place would have also come to the same ideas that created modern physics? Do you think Newton's laws of physics could have easily been discovered in the past if not for science being repressed ever?

Another example I can think of is this: one of the biggest anachronism I know about is the supposed steam engine that existed in ancient rome (called the aeolipile). Do you think that, logically, steam power should have been discovered by the time of the roman empire's height?

>We've all heard the meme about how Christianity repressed one thousand years of technology.
A meme invented by Protestants to make Catholics look bad, which was co-opted by atheists to make all Christians look bad.

The truth is that the first country on Earth to systematically construct centers of mass-education and research was arguably the first truly western country: The Frankish Kingdom of Charlemagne.

Throughout the entire Roman Empire there was only a single educational institution: the Academy at Athens, where Aristocrats sent their sons to what was essentially a bickering cadre of ideologues with no rigorous, systematic process for quantifying knowledge. Getting ahead in Roman times meant having the right family, and one of Plato's principle critiques of Athenian democracy was that uneducated people are not fit to run a democracy.

During the middle ages, somebody who got his engineering or medical degree at a Catholic university in France could take that degree anywhere else in Europe and find work in that profession. The true knowledge revolution only gets under way well into the Christian era, as hermitages gradually mutate over time into monasteries, and then into universities.

Prior to this knowledge was the province of bickering, competitive pagan temples who jealously horded whatever knowledge they had, and transmitted it orally rather than wrote it down, which meant that it was completely impermanent, and when a society suffered a downswing, a potentially huge amount of knowledge could have been lost. This stopped happening in the Christian era when these new fangled inventions called "books" meant that if the vikings came and wiped out all the monks and took all the valuables, the next batch of monks sent by the church could just find the books (which the vikings ignored or disdained) and pick right up where the previous generation left off.
