Christianity is on its way out in the west. And at least in America Islam isn't keeping up the pace to fill that whole. I thought that this would lead to most of society being atheist in the garden variety reddit style atheist (but with less flagrant autism).

Then I came across this article in the NY times
and saw some things in my personal life that got me questioning. The TLDR of the article is that those not going to church are more likely to believe in ghosts, aliens, and a lot of new age shit is filling in the gap. I've seen a lot of this sort of shit go around my campus as well. I knew college would have a few hippies into weird shit but its more popular with seemingly normal people than I anticipated.

I'm wondering if society is going pagan. Not in the traditional way maybe, but in a modern and individualistic way

how much would reparations actually cost?

at the risk of creating a /pol/ bait thread, has anyone ever run the numbers on roughly how much money is owed in wages/dividends/fees to slaves/descendents of slaves in the U.S.? would you figure they are owed whatever the minimum wage was at the time adjusted for inflation? perhaps prevailing wage would be used instead? has there ever been any legislative movement to seriously look at the numbers and determine the cost? I wonder what a comparison of the projected cost of reparations and monies paid out to black welfare recipients would look like. I apologize again for this seeming like obvious bait but I'm genuinely curious

I'm extremely serious about this question, so here me out.

What if in 1945, when Arthur Harris was preparing to launch the bombing of Dresden, instead he turns into a snake?

In this scenario on that late February day, Harris is sitting in his office alone, when suddenly he feels off.

He documents his experience:

>it becomes rougher
>his tongue forks
>eyes goes black, it becomes hard to write
>legs shrink into body
>arms shrink into bodies, Harris can no longer write

The rest of the transformation takes place; what was once a human of normal stature is now a slender creature of significant girth.

This scenario assumes that Harris retains his intelligence. What happens next? Will he still carry out the bombing of Dresden or will the allies develop a new strategy now that Bomber Harhiss is now a giant anaconda?

So I am reading through The Peloponnesian War and I am ignorant in Greek history (though trying to change that) and continually it references the Athenian decision to abandon their city and take to their ships during the persian invasion, did they actually, all Athenians abandon Athens and man a navy and defeat Persia?

When and why did American political vocabulary become so fucked? People over here unironically use "liberal" as a synonym for "left-wing", conservatism is taken to imply capitalism and "interventionism" (imperialism), socialism is taken to mean social democracy, no one calls themselves anarchists or libertarians but loony right-liberals, and the people who call themselves "centrists" are actually incredibly die-hard and sinister individualist liberals.
