Religious people: how would your worldview change if extraterrestrial aliens were real and did not have any religion? They are technologically equal to or superior to modern day humans.

Non-religious: how would your worldview change under similar circumstances, but the aliens had a religion that was very similar to Christianity, but with people/locations changed to match their home world?

>how would your worldview change under similar circumstances, but the aliens had a religion that was very similar to Christianity, but with people/locations changed to match their home world?

It wouldn't change. But it would be the first time in history the same religion popped up independently of each other in two places (one of the many reasons I think religions are false, but certainly not the top reason)

Is majoring in history really financial suicide?

Is it even possible to get any jobs with a major in history?

Im nearly finished with my history major and while I loved every second of it and would be glad to do anything with history in the future Im kinda starting to have doubts. Living in Germany btw.

If you're not really interested in going through academics: yes

t. history major.

Though desu with you, I took history because I have no idea what to do in life. My classmates went on to have office jobs in commercial companies anyway so meh, its not like its going to cage you into academics.

I just don't like office jobs.

Musuem curator historian history teacher idk , i was majoring before i left college because of this exact reasoning.

Anyone interested in neoplatonic movement ?

I've started reading Plotinus months ago and i find him very profound and intelligent.

>>
I'm reading him after Plato and Aristotle.
>>
>>448731
Yes, Plotinus has one of the best arguments I have read on what the infinite might be, given that it is more abstract and easier defined than most other attempts I have read on it.

His works use less loaded or emotive language when doing so, IMO a problem later introduced by monotheists and Gnostics, attempting to explain either a benevolent or malevolent focal point for created existence (Valentinian Gnostics being the exception).

His views on materialism do need to be handled with care, he could be argued as being anti-materialistic, when he saw the material world as a limited imitation of the divine or the infinite.

What about our rights should only apply to humans? What property about them leaves them human only?
>>
>>448656
Not OP but I think animals should have less rights then humans. obviously they should have someone, torturing animals for fun should be illegal, certain practices in the meat industry should be banned, but giving them rights equal to humans is silly
>>
>>448647
No, the reason humans are where they are today is because we've dominated & controlled every other species on the planet. Humans are worth more than animals because we control them; if we give them rights we admit we are equal to them, which we are not.

How important do you believe that drugs were in the course of history?
Some people claim that the reason Europeans have been more aggressive is due to the fact of drinking alcohol.
Others said, that one more reason that Europe entered the Renaissance, was because coffee started to be imported, which is a stimulant, and people stopped drinking alcohol, which is a depressant.
What do you think about drugs shaping history, /his/? What do you think that will come up next? Do you think that the reason weed gets legalized is to make people calmer and less likely to revolt?

Nietzsche said alcohol and Christianity were the two greatest vices of Europe.

> Europe entered the Renaissance,

Weren't a lot of them drinking mead, because it was safer/cleaner. So basically beer all day.
>>

>How important do you believe that drugs were in the course of history?

Extremely.
>>
OP here, also on what drugs do you think each religion was created on?
I recently saw a documentary about the roots of hinduism, and the man there said, that there were scripts, about a drug(probably something like mushroom tea) that was made and then drug, making you hallucinate, seeing visions about Gods.
This, at first, was only taken by samans, for only spiritual reasons, but then people started abusing it, and then, anything about it was lost, so that people would stop taking it for recreational reasons.
Christianity obviously is based on alcohol, especially wine, and I also 100% agree on what >>447405 said.
What do you think about weed as well? Ancient Greeks used to smoke it, but only to see visions of the future and only a few people were allowed to it.
What do you also think about other drugs? What about coca leaves?

We, the “have-nots...”

46 million Britains control over 40 million square kilometers of land — stolen by brute force in every part of the world! That is more than a quarter of all the inhabitable space on earth!

86 million Germans on the other hand must earn their daily bread from 600,000 square kilometers, and should even have to ask the London plutocratic clique for permission to do that!

We, the German “have-nots” fight for our food — and what about the British exploiter caste? — They fight for dividends at the cost of the blood of the peoples — but for the last time !!!

Think of it this way.

There are civilized countries, and there are nomadic countries. Civilized countries are obviously focused on building prosperous cities and having an actual economy and shit. Nomadic countries, or peoples rather, who live in tents and don't know how to farm or write, have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain by nigging out and invading their much more prosperous but much more peace-loving neighbors who are just minding their own business. Steppe nomads are like intercity youths who do nothing but play basketball all day err day, to make it big in the NBA someday, because that's the only way out of the hood for them. The same deal with the nomads. Invading countries is like basketball for them, and China is like the mansions, and lobster dinners, and the blonde-haired white women that comes with the fame and money of being an NBA superstar. So as long as nomadic fucks exist, they're going to constantly be invading China because they have absolutely nothing else going on for them.

Why is it not allowed to like Žižek and Chomsky at the same time?

Why are they considered to be opposites of each other?

I've watched videos of them on YouTube a lot, but I haven't read anything so I don't quite get why you apparently have to choose between them as I like much of what both of them have to say.

Which Žižek and/or Chomsky book would you recommend to get first?

Also general Žižek and Chomsky thread

>>
You don't have to choose between them, some faggots edited some clips of them saying dismissive, inflated, or false things about each other and it became a meme that they're absolute opposites whose differences can't be reconciled. Ultimately Chomsky is an analytic and Zizek is a continental philosopher. There isn't much between them other than the divide.

The Scots language is actually a variation of Old English, which makes the language Germanic in nature. Parts of Scotland also spoke Scottish Gaelic which is a Celtic language, but they are isolated hill people. So what are the Scottish people? GERMANIC or CELTIC ?
51 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>444853
Celtic. Scots exists because Anglo-Saxons ruled over southern Scotland for a while, thus the existing Scottish population likewise adopted the language. As such things tend to go, it eventually drifted enough to be considered its own language.

Just a simple case of acculturation. The British have a pretty extensive history of that sort of thing.
>>
>>444853
Celts whos speak a Germanic influenced language due to prolonged exposure and interbreeding with the Germanics living to the south. The Irish were ethnically very similar but linguistically retained their Celtic roots because they were separated by the Irish Sea
>>
>>444853
Not even remotely true. Scottish Gaelic is most closely related to q-Celtic languages such as Irish and Manx. It's not even in the same sub family. English is a North Germanic language.

Are Babylon, Assyria, Carthage part of "western civilization"?
Are Russia and Poland? Were the Ottomans and Persia?

Where do we draw the "western" line, when did we start drawing it, what reasons do we have to draw it, and has the "western culture" won and taken over all of the world by now, leaving "eastern" values in the past?

I'd like to hear a historical or philosophical approach, and would like to avoid a /pol/ approach. Thank you.

Why is Jesus dying a big deal? For one, he didn't really die, Jesus is alive. Second, he already knew life after death exists so he wasn't sacrificing anything just returning to his former state.

Either that or he is just a fallible human and his teachings shouldn't be followed

the creator of the universe chooses to become corporeal and suffer with and for his children. it's like how soldiers will have infinitely more respect for the general that charges with them than the one comfy in his tent scribbling battle plans in his tent while the real fight's going on

i don't really believe it but it's an extremely beautiful and evocative idea

Anglo here.

Tell me about Civil code. Is it just a special rulebook? Do precedents even matter, or do judges look to the book every time? Do governments constantly update their laws? What happens if there's a verdict that is inconsistent with previous verdicts?

General law thread, based common law welcome.

>Is it just a special rulebook?
Yes.
>Do precedents even matter, or do judges look to the book every time?
Precedent doesnt matter, it's the attorney who argue their case based to their interpretation of book. Judges rule based on what presented before them and their own understanding of the book.
>Do governments constantly update their laws?
Depends on their need.
>>
>>428458
It's simple. If the law is misinterpreted, then Napoleon will rise from his tomb and strike down the offender with a great mass of artillery.
>>
>>428458
1 ) yeah , but there is other codes ,68 of them
2 ) they somewhat do, sometimes rules a created from precedents
3 ) if it's needed yes
