After watching the documentary series "making a murderer" i have a lot of questions about the whole jury system in murrica.
Its a "classic" story about the american court system failing massively, not only because one of the defendents couldnt pay 100 thousands of dollars for a lawyer, but i think mainly because the whole case is decided by 12 random people with no expertise.
As a german, the whole jury system is pretty alien to me. In germany we have 1 judge in smaller cases and 3 judges in more serious, violent crimes. Myself and many germans prefer it that way, but i know many americans find this system absurd.
How can you give so much power to 12 completey random people?
Now this is gonna sound weird, but why cant jurors ask questions during the trial? They potentionally decide to kill someone, so every detail should be explained to them until they understand it perfectly. Maybe even until some third party is convinced the juror actually understands.
Refering back to the documentary, some people just arent very smart, actually fuck that, some people are really fucking stupid. They dont grasp the concept of evidence and proof, they dont understand reasonable doubt.
jurors decide not to talk it through as long as it takes, because they wanna go home, cuase they got shit to do.
People have issues with racism, prejeduice, get influenced by emotions etc. They can even decide that despite it being absolutely 100% clear that the defendent did it, to let him walk free, for no reason.
Do you think if we could just implement a completely new justice system tomorrow, someone would defend the jury system over something like 1 judge, multiple judges, a jury made up out of lawyers and judges, maybe juror as a completely standalone job, you'd still have to study law to some extent.
All of these systems have problems and flaws, but less than "just let 12 randoms decide whatever they want ignoring facts and law alike"

A lot of what he writes about is factually true but his ideological spin is suspect. His argument for reparations is poor, his idea of "white supremacy" is silly and overly-academic. His writing is very poor. At his best he's valuable for explaining things like post-War housing policy but that stuff isn't groundbreaking work or anything -- anyone slightly familiar with radical politics should have known of that stuff way before Coates started writing, so I don't see what his value as an intellectual is except

Could a "Rabbinical Christianity" exist?
One big problem I have with Christianity is the insistence on Orthodoxy. Why should everybody be expected to believe the same way? Why should heretics be punished for questioning the Orthodoxy? Judaism is cool because it's determined by experts rather than preachers. Even among the ultra-Orthodox, Rabbis are expected to question previous interpretation of scripture and find new ways to apply old teachings to modern life.
I feel like it would be really great if Christian preachers were also expected to interpret Christianity and the teachings of Jesus on their own accord. Because historians agree that the Bible was written and compiled by multiple different people, shouldn't preachers and clerics try to find their own interpretation, rather than assuming the text is God's literal word? A "Christian Rabbi" would consider how the faith should be interpreted in the context of both Christian history and the greater theological tradition.
This would, I believe, create a more intelligent, more theological, and more productive Christianity that encourages piety and personal theology among the clerics and laypeople.

Literally the best villain ever. Because of Confucian insistence on Ren and De, he couldn't just act tyrannically. So we have a very nuanced character, someone who knows how to motivate the common soldiers, who understands basic psychology, and who looks after the families of his followers, even the ones he kills for political gain.
It's hilarious that western works haven't learned from him, working for a villain is always "you have failed me for the last time" kind of stuff, whereas this guy was actually on top of his game and there was actually an incentive for people to work for him.

I've been studying Gnosticism for a while, and I have this particular question for you: Why can't the True God do something about the Demiurge's reality?
I mean: Why don't the True God save the imprisoned souls?
The Demiurge is not all-powerful, after all.
So why do we need Gnosis?
Why they sent Lucifer and Jesus to help us, instead of tearing down the prison and just free us?
While I think Gnosticism is a really interesting topic (and answers a lot of questions regarding to the Abrahamic religions), these questions bother me a lot.
