What is your opinion of Michael Collins and the IRA in the Irish War of Independence? Are you pro-treaty or anti-treaty?

In my opinion Irish should have fought on.
Or at least declare war during ww2, british occupation of north is still very hippocritical
>>
Arguments for Treaty
>Only reason we've been successful against British forces is because they've treated us as an insurgency, so they only sent their army. If we don't sign they'll treat us as a rogue state, send their full airforce and navy to assist the fight, and deal with us the same way they dealt with Germany.
>The Scottish population of Ulster doesn't want to join us, and they have no plans of evacuating the land their ancestors conquered.
>"Canada-status" will only last 2 decades
>got best treaty possible since de Valera, Ireland's best negotiator, decided to sit home since "Ireland's President doesn't travel abroad for negotiating" (ie. didn't wanna be the one bringing the bad news home)

Anti-Treaty
>Have to pay off massive amount of UK debt
>all members of the Oireachtas still have to swear allegiance to King
>Royal Navy still allowed to control 3 vital ports in our country
>Irish people are lazy, and if we don't win the war now, we'll never get around to finishing reunification of the island later

Probably still Pro-Treaty since Ireland wouldn't stand a chance in actual all-out war, let alone be able to militarily conquer the North without losing the moral high-ground and sympathy of the world.

What is reality? What are we doing here? Is it the Supreme Brute Fact, or just a quantum queef that shouldn't have happened? If so, then how am "I" here? Why should my consciousness have even arisen in the first place, what ties to me all this?

What can you guys tell me about the FFL? Especially the training. I've heard the training is brutal but I can't find any info on what makes it so hard.

You don't sleep, you don't eat, you walk, you run, you crawl, you get treated like shit and pushed beyond your limits until you become a new man. You're also taught French.

French soldier here, if you have more specific questions.

I need all the specifics you can give me, monseiur. I heard they make you run 20 miles in 100F heat and make you eat raw animals that you kill yourself. Any of that true? Is there more?

He is just as divine as his current counterpart, the pope. After all, both share the title Pontifex Maximus.

Didn't Julius Caesar's death coincide with earthquakes that were felt as far as present-day Germany?

Why did Britain perform so atrociously during WW1? Was it late forced conscription? Manpower issues? Deployment issues? Terrible leadership? Pride? All of the above?
62 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
They didn't. In fact their overall performance by 1918 was pretty remarkable and easily the best.
>>
>>776085
Early in the war they did not perform well. Failing to defend Belgium, the earlier stages of the Mesepotamian campaign (like the seige of Kut) and barely being able to halt the Germans into a stalemate in France.

>actually blaming the ideology for what people did in its name

I thought this board was supposed to be full of historicians who can recognize the geopolitical circumstances and historical evolution, while in every other thread i see people blaming everything on Islam/communism/christianity/god knows what else.

I argued about it shitload of times, but my time is better spent on somebody else who isn't a literal plebian who can't see past what the government says

Just wanted to say to you that you are retards one last time before i leave.

It's a shorthand you autistic fucktard. No-one actually thinks "Communism" murdered millions, normal people understand that they mean "people claiming to be Communists" murdered millions.

Gas yourself my friend.
>>
Well when the phrase "you may take slaves in the name of Islam" is in the Quran yes it is the ideology that is the issue.

And yet Communists blame death under capitalism to the institutional framework of capitalism, not individual capitalists

Is autism a modern phenomenon or did it exist throughout history? It seems kind of overdiagnosed and that makes me wonder wether our modern lifestyle somehow causes it. Maybe some other condition is mislabeled as autism nowadays.

It existed through history but assburger was often distinguished as "different" thing. Dunno how it is today but it changes every 3 decades or so.

Either way it existed but obviously nowadays we over-diagnose it just like we do with ADD.
>>
>>775486
No reason for it to be recent, if there are no records of it it's because nobody really cared about studying and identifying mental disorders before two centuries ago.

I'll preface this by saying I am a very traditional Catholic.

Is there something in particular about the Catholic Church and its structure that has caused its hierarchy to be so corrupted and shitty throughout the ages?

For a long time I assumed clergy misbehavior was a thing of the past, a Renaissance relic. But officials all the way up to Cardinals have admitted 30%+ homosexuals in their ranks, and estimates have been made that HALF of all clergy don't follow the vows of celibacy. HALF. This isn't a few renegade priests struggling to follow the rules--it's an institutionalized hypocrisy.

I honestly feel sort of cheated looking back at all the priests of my childhood. My diocese was largely spared the child abuse scandal, but how many of my priests were secretly fucking other priests or women in the parish?

I'm feeling very disillusioned with the institutional church and wondering if maybe the Orthodox have got it right on sexuality.

>Meanwhile, Mr. Garrison has confronted his father about the issues of sexual molestation, however, the issue was not that his dad had molested him, but rather that he felt neglected because his father had not touched him. When Mr. Mackey finds out about this, he fears Mr. Garrison is so distraught about the issue that he could actually die if Mr. Garrison Sr. does not molest him. Afterwards, Mr. Garrison is assaulted in the middle of the night by a mysterious stranger, and he sets off for the concert happy to have sorted things out with his father.

t. you
>>
>>775193
It's very simple really.

There's no real policing of the clergy, the church won't do it since it damages its image of being virtuous. When there's corruption the church really just doesn't know what to do because they are damned if they act and they are damned if they don't, so they just try to pretend they don't know about it.
>>
>>775193
Most of this would be avoided if the pope just made it ok for priest to get married, like they were able to in the past. You're obviously going to attract odd people when you make "no sex, no relationships, no marriage, no children" your requirement.

can it work?

>>
Yes it can work.

>>

>why is it good?

It treats people as adults, suggesting that every man and woman has the moral agency to treat one other well.

>why is it bad?

Because it's not true. Some people are moral imbeciles. Others are sociopaths, yet others are free riders (lazy cunts). Anarchism would work for Angels or robots, but not for humans.

>>775166

Indeed, families are often run on analogous principles of consensus-building and communal property.

Have looked up the definition of socialism, but still am not clear on it's meaning or effect on U.S affair, or future affairs. Can someone help a brother out?
32 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
The "socialism" talked about in modern Western countries is actually closer to "social democracy," which is a system of government that still allows the market to determine the allocation of resources, but has strong government oversight to correct "undesirable" outcomes of natural market mechanics and supports a strong safety net so that the neediest citizens of a state don't go unprotected.

"Socialism" in its historical context is more radical than that, as it was the idea that there should be a central body that controls the means of production, and that ALL wealth inequality (not just excessive inequality) should be eliminated. It was seen as the first step towards communism; a point in social history where the state was still necessary but the profit motivation and exploitation of the working classes were eliminated.
>>
>>774876
Thank you!
>>
>>774876

Socialism and communism were used interchangeably in the 19th century, a different word for a different context. Anarchists are socialists too but they obviously don't advocate for a state. Upper-phase communism as described by Marx is just anarchy.

War and politics is beyond the scope of good and evil. Machiavelli covered this 500 years ago.

And in the present day when most philosophy see good and evil as a relative thing it's even more nutty.

What was the point of the Zimmerman telegram? I mean, even if they could convince Mexico to attack the U.S. in case of U.S. entrance into WW1, what could the Mexicans possibly do? They got crushed back in the last war, and the power disparity between the two countries had grown, hugely, in the years since.

I would almost believe it was a British plot, if not for Zimmerman's affirmation of it. The whole thing makes no sense. Why make such a stupid offer with such disastrous possible repercussions?

All the european powers were pretty much making requests and promises out of their ass during the war.
>>
>>774383

I'm not even talking about the impossibility of the Germans offering meaningful aid; I'm talking about the fact that from the German point of view, Mexico's aid is worth less than the likely cost in terms of angering the U.S. you have in obtaining it.

Why even ask at this point?
>>
>>774375
If the US gets involved in the war Mexico can distract them in North America so Germany doesn't need to deal with ten million American troops on the front lines and can still potentially kick France and Britain's shit in
