Who was the leading figure of Enlightenment Era ?

Between Voltaire and Rousseau, or in general? Locke and Rousseau are equals at the top, I'd say. Rousseau is not well liked around here, and maybe for good reason. To judge that, I suppose we'd have to look at the degree to which Western society accepted the ideals of the individuals involved. Rousseau and Hobbes appear to have 'lost', so to speak, because society turned away from absolutism and never even considered returning to the so-called natural state.

>Locke and Rousseau are equals at the top

Locke and Voltaire, rather. My mistake.

The enlightenment was a cancerous mistake.

I'm looking for the best arguments that will help me decide which life aim is objectively more reasonable. This is dumbed down to an annoying level for most of you, I'm sure, but to be clear I'm torn between aiming to live a life where I:

A(comfortable hedonism): Focus on maximizing my current temporary life with frequent comfortable pleasures that feel fulfilling despite their futility in the grand scheme. (Smoke/drink, video games, sex, etc.)

OR

B(will to power): Focus on maximizing my abilities (power) for the future through tests of endurance, reading/learning which grant a type of satisfaction afterward, rather than during the act. (exercise, work a bunch, eat healthily)

Yes this proposition is full of pitfalls and obviously subject to the black and white fallacy. There is definitely overlap, but for the sake of argument I'd like to ignore those because I'd rather just be persuaded one way or the other.

Yes, technically you can have both, but I feel that one holds more value than the other in determining a balance, and I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a philosopher or writer that could best quell my inquiries on the matter.

>>
Just aim for a balance of maximizing both at the same time.

I don't know shit about philosophers. How about Aristotle and his Golden Mean.
>>
>>890083
Also, I like Erich Fromm, which shouldn't be very much liked around here (not as much a philosopher as other occupations, also not very autistic or a Nazi). In "To have or to be?" he argues a different way to live, without trying to maximize anything, but putting emphasis on living and experiencing life itself instead, but not necessarily in a hedonistic way.

The year is 2016, common era. 20 years ago was 1996 and things seemed pretty alright(ish). If you were to take a peak back then, and a glance (not a detailed look, obv) at now would you say we were moving towards a historical peak or trough? Why?
31 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
Why are you holding a cup with your feet?
>>
Peak in some ways, not in others.

A 96er wouldn't understand our obsession with the internet, particularly social media. They also wouldn't understand the existential angst the West feels over terrorism//financial crisis/the rise of China/government surveillance.

But they'd still think it's a trough, because us 2016ers would all seem like needlessly serious, self-centered, self-righteous people to them, and these qualities come about through hardship.

This is /his/tory's best architect Mimar Sinan
He lived to be 98 in the times of the middle ages
He erected many buildings from East-Europe to East-Asia
He was the kindest man for he had 4 apprentices which were orphans. One of them later became the architect of Taj Mahal.
This is/was undoubtedly history's best architect

A thought just occurred to me while watching The Messenger:
What happened to all the "royal" plate armor from noblemen and Kings from the middle ages?
Was any of it held on to throughout history? Is there anywhere you can see it on display if any of them exist?
I'd like to see some actual legit armor from the Richard's, or the Louis'.
I've never even heard of any of this stuff still existing other than IIRC some crowns and jewels and such.

Pic related's website has some interesting info, and only a few pictures, I'd really like to see some stuff from kings or well known figures in history from 900-1500 AD

US Christians creepy, sycophantic love for Jews as the chosen people is fucking weird. They still believe they're going to hell, anyway.

Modern American Left Behind-tier Protestants are an embarrassment and an insult to millennia of Christian religious, intellectual, and philosophical tradition.

Israel needs to exist so the temple can exist so sacrifices can exist so etc. with the end goal of Jesus returning.

Haven't seen this on /his/ yet. What did different people eat throughout history? What did the Egyptians eat and the Pharaohs? What did the Greeks, Alexander and Leonidas eat? What did the Persians eat? What was a common meal for Roman plebs? The Ceasars must have had delicious food. What about vikings or mongols? Or a common colonial British colonizer?
How do you think their diet affected their success? Why are we Americans the fattest fucks ever?

China and Rome pretty much invented fastfood for merchants on the go.

Well, not exactly fastfood, but Bistro style eateries that just shat out food for sale and ready to eat.

Also fastfood pretty much popularized and solidified Chopsticks as THE Chinese utensil par excellence (fun fact: they had spoons and forks too). Because Chopsticks enabled you to eat anywhere. You don't need a table. You can eat on the deck of your ship, on your cart, or if you're a porter, on foot. It's versatile.

the Romans put a kind of fish sauce called garum(i think?) on loads of their food, there is even a hill somewhere in Italy where grass has grown over an ancient Roman landfill composed of old garum amorphae

There is some ancient Egyptian cookbook in my collection. Haven't read it in a while, but i remember one of the things they ate was a lotus bread.

I also have a couple of books on the Sumerian diet and they basically smothered everything in onion and mint.

Read about the daily lives of aztecs, the nobles knew how to throw feasts. Some of the memorable dishes i remember are turkey egg tamales, a "cheese" made from flies, posole but with human meat, and amaranth/blood mix snacks.

I imagine Persians ate a lot of the same foods that are still eaten today in Iran.

It's late here, but this topic used to interest me a ton. I've cooked ancient recipes from around the world, Most cultures you choose will have at least one book dedicated to their cuisine. Pick and read up.

Europe hasn't witnessed peace for more than 30 years in total. A battle that ensnared the whole world was what 65 years ago?

Considering how much disinfo is floating around in our technological age of easily accessible information, how can we be sure that historical accounts are accurate? Since the information was more tightly controlled in the past than is possible now, if anything, past history is many times less accurate than the information future generations can gather from our era. Having said that, can we not conclude that the study of history, being a study of lies and myths, simply a waste of time? Some argue this to be the case. I seriously hope you didn't major in history.

There's a lot of assumptions packed into this one thing.

Also you also assume that lies and myths aren't worthy of study in their own right.

Historians prefer to work with sources that were produced without political intention, like births and deaths rolls, or monestary accounting tables.

We also spend 10 years a historian training them how to read for bias ("hermeneutics" or "reading").
