Napoleonic Wars Thread?
Napoleonic Wars Thread.
Daily reminder that Napoleon a shit and was brought down by his own hubris
>Muh constant expansion
>Having a bigger army = being a better general
>Continental blockade is a good plan XD
>>906072
I mean he was good, one of the reasons he lost so many land battles towards the end of the wars was because other armies started using his own tactics against him
>>906085
>Use same tactics over and over again
>Wonder why they get countered
>'Good'
If the nation is a modern concept, then what did monarchs rule over?
States
Their personal property
>>905370
You mean medieval monarchs?
Feudal holdings. The Kingdom was a collection of feudal properties with the king as a primus inter pares among them.
If you are referring to ancient times, then it was empires, kingdoms or city states.
Would you watch Jousting if it was broadcast on TV?

Are people who are consistently poor throughout their lives happier than rich people?
I am starting to seriously think so. Consider:
Poor are ok in shitty conditions: if a rich man moves to a poor neighborhood, he feels horrible, even suicidal, while the poor there are pretty much used to such bad conditions, they are often enough even happy with daily things.
Poor are big spenders: the rich man likes money because of its potential power, because of safety etc..., the poor man likes money because it mostly allows him to have quick fun. So it is fair to say that poor people spend mostly on entertainment, while rich people don't, therefore poor people are naturally more entertained. Poor people won't even get bored with their spendings, because soon enough they won't have money!
Richfags suicide: Rich people kill themselves very often. Holy shit, rich countries have high suicide rates, and a higher suicide rate than a homicide rate, often twice as high!
Religions propose voluntary poverty: Buddhism, Christianity, etc propose poverty, even extreme poverty, as a lifestyle towards happiness/heaven/nirvana. It seems poverty itself makes you happy.
Money, and wealth, requires work: The more money and wealth you have, the less free time you get. Wealth pretty much makes you a manager, a leader, and that is a hard full time job. Wealth spoils you, you won't be able to live without it easily, so you have a big motivation to worry. The kind of mental work expected from you will be equivalent to afternoons of hard math homework. As long as you are a normal human being, money will take a mental toil on you. Even if you start partying hard with it, unlike the poors, you won't run out of money before an overdose or high tolerance for entertainment. You will be either bored, or on rehab, or doing math, that is, if you don't die.
Fake friendships, fake life: Your personal life will be basically shit because of it. Everyone will lie to you, and you will lie to everyone.

Fuck no.
t. third world.
it´s no fun lacking proteins to develop your intellect, dying from mild diseases, being a wage slave or cannon fodder, etc.
I often wish I was born into a poorer family that I actually loved.
But then I realize that I'd likely have the same social problems, only I'd lack money too.
>He who is without wealth amidst unlimited quantities of it, is either a coward, a born slave, or a lunatic; and no self-respecting woman should marry such an imbecile.
What did he meme by this?
He meant that the Jews are sexy ubermenschen.

The whole book is advocating radical action.
If you're a poor, you kill the rich man and steal his possessions. > it heavily advocates amorality, consequentialism and psychological hedonism. In Might Is Right, Redbeard rejects conventional ideas of human and natural rights and argues that only strength or physical might can establish moral right
"Christs may come and Christs may go but Caesar is forever"
>>904638
NO; IT ADVOCATES EXTREME ACTION; YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT RADICAL ACTION IS; DO NOT USE TERMS, OR WORDS THE MEANING OF WHICH YOU IGNORE.

If you're interested in even more history of philosophy I'd recommend The History of Philosophy by Julian Marias. Durant's book used to be my favorite because I read it as a kid, then I read Marias'and it was terrific.

How does this makes you feel?
Like we should have just gassed them like the rats they are to halt their advances.
How will peoples reactions when finding out that all sides of the conflict partook in the looting make you feel?

As percentage of sites assessed, we see 21% of sites
looted in ISIS areas and 16.5% in Syrian regime areas, compared with 28% and 27% in Kurdish and opposition-held areas respectively.
It's no shock considering the country had -9.90% GDP growth last year (even Iraq and Afghanistan experienced a more positive net growth) and all sides are pulling funds which ever way they can through crude, amphetamines, and other anti depressants; Pfizer must be making a killing.

He was a good statesman and was responsible for the industrialization of France and helped in making it a major power during the 19th century

Second French Empire was pretty damn GOAT in general.
What do you think about the evolution of ballet, particular 19th century ballet compared to modern ballet?
>>901647
I don't know much about it other than that Balanchine is the guy who's pinned as being totally responsible for the whole thing. I do know that ballerinas have very ambivalent opinions on whether or not the transition was an overall good for the art form. Most of the negatives seem to come from the new, rather extreme body types (and feet) required for professional ballet. This is just me making observations from the 2 (professional) ballerinas I've dated.
I'd be interested in seeing a thread with people more knowledgeable than I, but this is 4chan. Here's your reply for starting a thread on an interesting topic.
>>902753
I would say the transition can't necessarily be called bad or good. I do think the changes from late 19th century ballet/early 20th century to modern ballet includes losses and gains. We've pretty much lost these really fantastic terre à terre steps they used to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAQs_rlyCKo (by the way I highly recommend all the Ballet Evolved videos, very very interesting look at the history and evolution of ballet) yet modern ballet dances can do far more fouettes/pirouettes/other turns than before because of the changes in shoes and different standards for ballet training. Modern dancers can also balance for longer period.
In modern ballet, legs are lifted higher and straighter and there is much more emphasis on achieving a specific aesthetic with the body--achieving a line or arc at a certain moment, and making sure every thing looks "clean," each step and jump measured to perfectionist. Modern ballet requires you to be an athlete, and also as you said, requires or expects a more extreme body type. Whereas in the past, the emphasis was more on those little details--their feet movements, leg movements, arm movements, all creating stories and drama and reactions. You had to have great strength in your feet and legs--more so because the shoes of yore provided almost no support--but it wasn't nearly as intensive, physically.
Compare this old pas de deux: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YNpnbGmM5M or Ellen Price dancing La Sylphide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7xkcl0I6zA and you can get a better idea of it.

(continued)
There's been a lot of buzz since last year because of Ratmansky's new production of The Sleeping Beauty, which is largely based on the original Petipa of 1890. Ratmansky painstakingly transcribed Petipa's original notations, adding some things where the notations were unclear and to add a bit of modern sensibility to certain pieces, but overall it's meant to evoke the feel of the late 19th century/early 20th century ballets, costumes and sets included.
Here's a short sample of a few dances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVQTJFPqvjE
Personally, I disagree with those that dislike modern ballet as a whole, merely because modern ballet can theoretically be anything. You can recreate the original 1890 Sleeping Beauty as meticulously as you want, or you can re envision Sleeping Beauty with vampires and gothic elements, or you can take the music scored for Sleeping Beauty and use it to tell the story of the fall of the Romanov family. Be free!
If Roman Legions came to be a standing army for Rome, why is it that such a concept disappeared from Europe during the Middle Ages?
>>900986
None of the tiny Feudalcuck states had the fucking money, resources, nor political organization for the longest time.
Showed up again by the time of the Renaissance. But fully impelemented after the end of the 30 Years War and Treaty of Westphalia.
>>900986
Standing armies require a much more complex and prosperous economy than feudalism and levies.
>>900986
Standing armies are expensive as fuck as it requires you to pay your soldiers all the time instead of just when they are needed. Not even the parthians kept a standing army IIRC.
Another thing that makes having standing armies a problem is having a military aristocracy. Nobles aren't that fond of spending long amounts of times away from their lands, especially if it means hanging around some god forsaken border province.
What would you say are the most important cities in history? (while listing no more than 20 or so)
I think you definitely have to include:
Memphis
Thebes
Babylon
Athens
Jerusalem
Alexandria
Rome
Constantinople
Paris
London
Tenochtitlan
New York
No idea what was relevant in China or India.
I know which Memphis you mean, but I laugh at the idea that people might think you mean Memphis Tennessee
>>900897
homeland of the KKK right?
pretty important then kek
>>900792
Istanbul
Rome
London
Paris
Vienna
Moskov
Let's be honest, Muslims in the Middle Ages were pretty badass, weren't they?
These dudes were kicking the shit out of Persia and Byzantium while Europe was mostly a gagglefuck of squabbling kingdoms and city states. They had immense cavalry, and the idea of them starting out as mere tribes from the middle of nowhere and forging powerful empires. They also left a legacy that is still felt today.
>>900611
>kicking the shit out of Persia and Byzantium
>a desirable thing
apart from you know the middle east being the site of most technological advances until 1600 or so
The middle east is a fairly cool place until relatively recently in history.
Shame it's now hell on earth.
