AKA babby's first philosophy. It's astounding how many people at my school (especially my philosophy class) take eastern religions seriously.
"omg, I love Zen! I'm totally going to try to make time for it in my life (but I'm so busy lol)!"
"omg, there's nothing you can criticize about Taoism!"
I can't stand it, why are eastern religions so pretentious? They're frankly illogical. Thought isn't inherently bad like they tend to proselytize , it's a piece of human consciousness - it makes us what we are. I understand their plea to live in the present and whatnot, but your past is who you are and many people like to reflect and think about the past. Your experiences are framed through your previous experiences, and I'm a firm believer it's impossible to detach yourself from that. Impossible to be completely objective as they claim.
To me, they seem frankly illogical. If life is suffering, why not kill yourself? (lol edgy!) Why waste it chasing for a enlightenment that may never come? Why waste time being a Taoist in a world that is irrefutably in-congruent with it? It's simply more snake oil to make you waste time to chase happiness, when happiness is in the eye of the beholder. Or, you could be of the camp that happiness (or contentedness) is a myth, but I'm not quite there yet.
I understand I came off like a fedora and I don't mean to, I enjoy philosophy for the most part but I can't stand eastern religions (inb4 western state of mind)

Well remember that they were developed in ancient India, which was a pretty miserable place to be alive, so the natural sentiment is to dull your mind against nonstop suffering.
But if you are a pampered modern person you probably don't suffer at all and have no use for it.

Montezuma was little different. His capture by Cortez did expore a sort of naive innocence in him, though.
As for Cortez, his story is one of the most amazing in all of history, which he accomplished singlehandedly by his wits.

I wouldn't say exactly smart, but crafty (or maybe both). But I can fucking guarantee you that Fidel Castro's luck stat was off the charts.

Imagine being the ultimate trading empire straddling east and west. You have greeks mingling with indians, scythians, persians and the odd chinese trader.
It probably would be the oddest thing to see in that time and era.

>According to Plutarch, Bagoas won a dancing contest after the Macedonian crossing of the Gedrosian Desert. The Macedonian troops, with whom Bagoas was very popular, demanded that king Alexander should kiss Bagoas, and he did so. Athenaeus tells, that King Alexander also was madly devoted to boys. Dicaearchus, at any rate, in his book On the Sacrifice at Ilium, says that he was so overcome with love for the eunuch Bagoas that, in full view of the entire theatre, he, bending over, caressed Bagoas fondly, and when the audience clapped and shouted in applause, he, nothing loath, again bent over and kissed him deeply.

It's cosy (sic) knowing I am part of the invisible church that Peter belongs to, and not to the Church of Peter.

Here's a discussion question to get the ball rolling:
A study from last year found that 40% of economics experiments failed to replicate. Is this good, or bad news? What does this study mean for the debate on whether economics is a "hard science", "soft science", or a science at all?
Source: http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/03/about-40-economics-experiments-fail-replication-survey
>>910714
This is really a thread for /biz/, and I don't really think it has much effect on economics status as a science, social sciences have always been soft with difficult to reproduce results.
I think this is good news. A 60% replication rate doesn't seem bad at all for a social science.
Also, it's useful to compare this to the same initiative taken for psychology. Psychology is a "harder" science than economics, but only had a 36% replication rate (http://science.sciencemag.org/content/349/6251/aac4716)
Overall, I just like that people are waking up, and these replication studies are very good and should improve the social sciences.
>>910714
I don't think its good or bad within itself. But it shines a light on the limitations of economics as a science. There are many unknown variables at play in an economy that are simply impossible to isolate.
