To what degree does capitalism influence out sexual mores? Could it be said that government austerity programs lead to a breakdown in traditional structures, allowing for commercialist views of sex as a disposable commodity to arise?
Just compare the purely hedonistic sexual dynamics of the 80s to the attitudes of the 1960s. While both eras saw a culture that celebrated promiscuity, in the 60s it happened in the name of love, as hippie communes saw sex as not simple hedonism, but a means for procreation and human connection. In the 80s, the emotional value of sex had been thrown to the sideline, as the act was considered by so many Wall Street upstarts and new wave pop divas to be only another luxury to be consumed -- akin to a Coke, even less of a serious investment than the purchase of the latest Michael Jackson cassette.
An example, non-American: while both East and West Germany were known for their comparative sexual immodesty, the government of the GDR believed "free" sexual relations would promote social harmony despite poverty, and increase the falling birthrate. In West Germany, the sex trade (both pornography and prostitution) was massive. Most young men would encounter sex not through love, but through capitalism.

Shaolin monasteries relied on themselves for protection of their lands since Chinese secular, bureaucratic patrons would come and go without much guarantee of continuity or a supranational organization that can administer and defend it from afar with top-down political influence.
Christian monks however could reasonably rely on aristocratic patrons, landed families, and generations of knightly houses or free city militiamen to protect its interests. And if they couldn't, there was the network of bishops and the pope/patriarch who could appeal to imperial or royal authorities to do the job in a pinch.
As for why little came about from Viking raids, it's probably because most raids are fictional accounts written centuries later in a time of peace to give a monastery a legendary founding story and fiery baptism against heathen forces.

Fahrenheit is a much more specific way to measure temperature which is deemed necessary due to the wide diversity of extreme and moderate climates within America.
This problem could be solved if Americans just learned to use decimals, but let's leave it at that.
For other measurements, America was already too accustomed to the pound/inch/whatever system to change it and unlike other countries, wasn't pressured to change for trading purposes for whatever reason.
