Imagine that you must fight for French in WWI or for Soviets in WWII. What war would you choose?

I imagine if you're able to survive the first half of the war as a soviet, the latter half was much more exciting with all the rape and looting they did in their way to berlin.

Soviets in WWII, of course. WWII (for the Soviets) was about survival of their people, WWI was about satisfying the interests of the Anglo.

Hey /his/,

Why is this guy so hated by modern historians?

Also has anyone written a decent concise history of the United States?

I want a primer before branching out to other topics. At this point I have only read 1776 and John Adams which were both kind of pop history.

I did read one concise history of the American Revolution that was pretty okay but I want a more broad overview.

Because of the Trail of Tears. If you get a modern historian worth their salt then they'd include putting money into Wildcat banks and causing the Panic of 1837 and that he increased the powers of the presidency by ignoring the Supreme Courts and Congress.

He was however the first people's president and was elected by all white males, they didn't need property to vote in this election.
>>
>Why is this guy so hated by modern historians?

He isn't. He tends to be rated highly even by modern scholars.
>>
>>1110825
They'd also mention the destruction of the second bank of the United States. And the Spoils System.

I heard that Muslims stole this symbol from Byzantine Empire. Is it true? Why would they do that? What is original meaning of crescent and moon?

It's Parthian originally. Beyond that, I don't know. Probably some near east moon fetish bullshit.
>>
Blame the Ottomans for popularizing it. Islam doesn't have a symbol.

Tell me about Chetniks, /his/! I've never heard about them, but that flag is fucking badass! Who were they fighting for (I suppose for the Germans, since they have a skull on the flag) ?

>>
one of two rebel groups in Serbia during WWII, now overzealous nationalist bearded morons
>>
Chetniks were originally paramilitaries who fought in Balkan Wars. Name is derived from četa which means company.

Most famous chetniks are those of WW2 and that story is kinda complicated.
They were nominally Yugoslav but in practice they were Serb nationalists.

Most of them swore allegiance to the King and nominally accepted command of Draža Mihajlović but in reality there were several de facto independent formations which fought in different parts.

In the first year they fought against occupiers and their local collaborators, however later they started collaborating with Germans and Italians and fought communists. Mihajlović argued that they should wait until German and Italian defeat was imminent to avoid unnecessary loses, and that fighting communists was a priority.

Some of the commanders collaborated pretty openly, meanwhile Draža tried to keep a distance, and it's still debated how much he really collaborated.

They did some pretty gruesome crimes and those in Montenegro practically started an ethnic cleansing of Muslim population in the north.

In Croatia they fought with ustašas to protect local Serb population, but later many of them joined partisans while some of četniks started collaborating with ustašas to fight partisans (communists).

Overall by 1944 most of them abandoned the movement and joined Tito's army after he offered them amnesty.

As for my personal opinion, they shouldn't be demonized like they were, but they shouldn't be considered heroes either. Save for some exceptions most of their formations were pretty incompetent or openly collaborated with Germans and Italians.
>>
The Chetniks (from turkish Cheta which means band) were a rebel group during the WW2 which allied with various forces for their own advantage. Their ultimate goal was to establish an "ethnically clean" Greater Serbia in the Balkans which meant they terrorized Croatian and Bosnian muslims in several areas. Their leader was a bearded serb nationalist, Draza. Today they are more of a symbol of nationalist Serbian ideas.

So, do you think that history and social studies in general should use the same methodology as natural sciences? Or do you think that using the standard hypothesis testing procedure a.k.a. scientific method is unapplicable when we deal with the complex phenomena of human society? Most political scientists whom I've met agree with former, most historians - with the latter. What is /his/ consensus on this?

Pic related.

This is literally what economics is, OP.
>>
>>1110232
as I see it, there is a great deal of difficulty using the scientific method with regards to society/social systems. Especially presently existing ones.

>>1110392
economics sometimes gives me the impressions of religion or some form of physics envy (which I get from sociology too).
they think everything can be reduced down to mathmatical equations and cold logic, not realizing they come off as autistic as a result.

They think people are logical/rational beings when humans are emotional and prone to irrational behavior.

Given that economists/economic theories seem to serve more as justification for a government's policy than anything else. I am not surprised.
>>
>>1110410
>they think everything can be reduced down to mathematical equations and cold logic, not realizing they come off as autistic as a result.
No, they (we) are simply applying scientific methods to research social issues. We don't think everything can be "reduced down to mathematical equations", but we try to in order to build models.
Compare it to how psychologists put up lists with bullet points for different psychological diagnoses. Every person is a complex individual and this needs to be taken into consideration, but having these diagnoses help psychologists form some order and research greater phenomenons on a macro scale. Models are a necessary thing for research, models allow us to research a complex, broad reality.
Adjusting models for things like human rationality vs. irrationality is a major part of economics. If you don't know this I don't think you have a lot of insight into economics at all, I have to say.

Do we have any sort of reference on the revelations that lead to cultures figuring out how to manufacture steel?

Obviously it's going to be different people and events across different cultures, many different people/instances within some I imagine, but I need to know more about the process of the progress of steel; specifically across western Europe and/or the Middle East, as well as any relevant metallurgy that could've been going on in northern Africa; Egypt and elsewhere.

The more obtuse question is: how long and how far could a hypothetical society go with modest access to iron ore, which they've been making into rudimentary tools and weapons, before they figure out steel? Like, what sorts of environments do you need to have to make it so that they've got all the iron they need, though not an abundance, but they don't figure out steel. Or, at least hey don't understand steel. They may have practices that they think are making the iron stronger, and it is, but not for the reasons they think it is.

That, however, is something I can easily address on my own for my purposes if I had a better understanding of the sorts of processes and revelations that steel came from. To my understanding a society with regular access to iron generally figures out some sort of steeling process within that same millennium.

They figured out steel as soon as they figured out Iron. There was no steel age, all iron was steel.

Steel is simply iron with carbon, which happened in all pre modern furnaces because of the charcoal they used. However i guess it would have been the Celts and Romans who truly figured out the right amount of carbon needed to make good quality steel.
>>
>>1109802
Copper in pure form is quite abundant in some areas and could just be grabbed and cold hammered into shape. At some point folks figured out said metal is also found in ores in mines and such. After figuring out that tin mixed with copper gives a good metal you're officially bronze age, or when you import bronze depending on your view of history.

As for steel/iron >>1109810 is spot on.

Here is a more in depth explanation about iron/steel which also covers Japanese shit.
