In the 19th century most of the common folk had very negative opinions about Germans. And they respected the Russian emperor a lot more, because he actually improved their condition (end of serfdom in 1816/19, full liberation in the 1850s/60s), unlike the germans, under whom they had been living in slavery for hundreds of years.
Nowadays the opinions have changed; most people are anti-russian and either neutral or pro-german.

What does philosophy have to say about what the point of society and the human progress should be?
Not in the sense of "hurr durr human are made to procreate", but I mean what we as conscious, modern people should strive for. Should it be a society of leisure where everyone can spend their time following their interests as machines replace labor? Or a society of discovery: trying to learn more about everything for the sake of knowledge itself? Etc.
What do some well-known philosophers have to say?
