Not any more than Christianity in general.

This board is dedicated to the discussion of history and the other humanities such as philosophy, religion, law, classical artwork, archeology, anthropology, ancient languages, etc. Please use /lit/ for discussions of literature. Threads should be about specific topics, and the creation of "general" threads is discouraged.
For the purpose of determining what is history, please do not start threads about events taking place less than 25 years ago. Historical discussions should be focused on past events, and not their contemporary consequences. Discussion of modern politics, current events, popular culture, or other non-historical topics should be posted elsewhere. General discussions about international culture should go on /int/.
/his/ is not /pol/, and Global Rule #3 is in effect. Do not try to treat this board as /pol/ with dates. Blatant racism and trolling will not be tolerated, and a high level of discourse is expected. History can be examined from many different conflicting viewpoints; please treat other posters with respect and address the content of their post instead of attacking their character.
When discussing history, please reference credible source material, and provide as much supporting information as possible in your posts.

Since the Ancient Greeks who were all over-manly fags.
India, Yoga is older than Greek as a civilization.
I believe Harappan civilizations were the ones that invented yoga practices.
Yoga, as in whole range of body exercises, not just sitting down and saying "aum"

The rest of the world.
Nothing there.
It's Russia. Their entire history is "and then it got worse".
Their entire economy was dependent on exporting oil to capitalists. The oil crisis in the 70s made them strong. Then oil got cheap in the 80s and caused them to collapse.
They did well for a bit in the 50s and 60s. When they were trying to prove they were better than the West.

Should you mean history in general and don't mind searching/spending a fair bit I could reccomend both of asimovs books on the topic the Roman republic is rather thorough but mildly basic so is the empire it just depends on how extensive you want it. Also I could reccomend sulpicius's cook book or of course bello de Galico

I'm pretty sure you mean Roman Emperor, OP
there is no such title as "Emperor of Byzantium"
>>1237797
There is no "Emperor" either you pretentious prick. No one called himself Imperator.
I hope all Basileus's fuck you in your pretentious arrogant ass like a true greek pederast.
Should we treat cetaceans, great apes and elephants as if they're sentient?
We don't know yet if they are, or even what that means but evidence seems to indicate they're different from other animals. They're smarter and perhaps more aware. Is it the safest bet ethically for us to stop hunting them and try to communicate, if such a thing were possible?
They're not sentient, stupid. They don't have the capacity for self-reflection. Well neither do RepubliKKKans but that's beside the point.
>>1237772
>sentient
They are sentient.
You mean sapient.
They may be closer. You care more about them, because you can identify more with them.
As knowledge of their behavior becomes more widespread and people become more empathetic you can expect more people to try to protect them.
As it is, most people that hunt these animals don't really know or care. Often they can't afford to care, as they derive much of their livelihood from hunting or otherwise exploiting these creatures for entertainment.
Is it ethical to alter the genetics of these and maybe other animals to make them hyper-intelligent and definitely sapient?
Finno-Ugrics. What's up with these guys?
Finns and Estonians look like scandinavians and Udmurts look like Irish. Yet they're originally from central asia?

Even thousands of years ago they were immigrating to the far east of Europe.

What if instead attacking France in 1914, Germans instead attack Russians in the East and hold a defensive line against the frogs?
>>1237537
If Russia would have collapsed considerably sooner say late 1915 or early 1916 the war in the west would have had a different outcome. Personally i think France would have collapsed somwhere around late 1917/early 1918. Germany wouldn't have starved as bad (ukrainian agriculture) and maybe would have gotten some valuable ressources out of the empires rotten corpse.
I think GB and the Reich would have made a peace Deal at some point. France would have had an even worse face than Weimar, plagued by revanchists and left wing extremism.
>>1237915
france wouldnt, but italy practicaly did
>>1237925
France would have collapsed at some point against loads of german troops from the east and whatever A-U could spare.
Does appeal to historical progress, function as the secular equivalent to "Deus Vult" and "divine ordination"? It seems to have largely filled that vacuum.
>>1237533
Long story short: yes. Empiricism also plays a role, in the sense that science (including social science) is given quasi-religious authority in public debates despite none of the participants really understanding the research and data.

So the point is that we're supposed to be laughing at the stupidity of the article, right? You don't actually think like that?
Do any of you know what the oldest written language, or just oldest language known to have been used, is?
And do you know how the letters were used to form sentences, or have any good books or websites you could recommend?
>>1237517
That is Babylonian cuneiform, and it's not the oldest written script. Of physical examples we have, it's hotly debated if Sumerian cuneiform is oldest or Egyptian hieroglyphs. The debate is two-fold, the actual age of the strata in which they're found and the "long or short" reckoning to the events which they portray.
>>1237517
Earliest written communication was not phonetic or even syllabic. It was more like ideas and subsequent modifiers. You could say "man", then, "I mean this man who was a son", then you say "specifically related to this king", then "arose" (or became king, or deified), then "when this event happened" (which might be a conflict, or an astronomical sign, or foundation of a city) , and on and on.
I don't think theres a clear agreement on this, the first Sumerian cuneiform and Egyptian hierogliphic finds are from roughly the same era, plus there are several finds of protowriting even much older from all over the world.
