Recently I came upon this article that states there is little to no evidence of the one handed military flail being an actual weapon used in the middle ages.
http://www.publicmedievalist.com/curious-case-weapon-didnt-exist/
In one of the sources cited (Kelly DeVries and Robert Douglas Smith, Medieval military technology) it is writen that there is some scholarly debate on if these things existed at all. They do not give any sources for this though.
My question to you /his/ is wether any of you are familiar with this debate and what are your thoughts on this subject.
please provide sources to your claims, because the internet seems full of unfounded claims on this subject

No this is a thread about the historicity of a medieval object and scholarly debate about said object. Is this not a board to discuss the science of history and other humanities
Makes sense.
There isn't a lot of advantage in terms of kinetic energy, and it makes it harder to hit.
Was the French revolution a failure?
>Allowed for radical factions to take over
>Allowed for Napoleon to take over
>Made any future government in France unstable.
>>1312766
The revolution failed, but things were never quite the same after so you could argue that it won in the long run/in the world of ideas.
>>1312766
>Allowed for radical factions to take over
>Allowed for Napoleon to take over
Pretty much any political movement will split off into radicals and moderates. That's not a failure per se. There was literally nothing wrong with pre-1804 Napoleon. There's also a contradiction in these statements: you're at the same time complaining about the radical AND the moderate elements.
>Made any future government in France unstable.
That was the Coalition. That same Coalition that violated the Treaty of Amiens. The one treaty that was supposed to bring peace to Europe and give France the stability it needed after a chaotic revolution. And the stability it was never given, paving the way for the empire.
>>1312766
>Was the French revolution a failure?
>a failure?
at what?
You have provided an incomplete question. As it stand any answer would rest on the value judgments of the answerer. May as well as 'how do you feel about the French Revolution' rather than couching it in a pretension of objectivity.
What is the difference between communism and socialism? There seems to be a great deal of confusion between these two terms for Amerifats for some reason.
>inb4 they're both the same
Socialism still has private property
>>1312414
Socialism grows out of Capitalism and is a system of production based on public ownership of the means of production (Anything from Soviet-style central planning to worker-controlled industrial democracy), Communism is a further development of this, also known as the 'higher stage' of Socialism, with no state, no money, no class system etc.
It would be correct to say that the USSR was a Communist state (They at least claimed to be developing Socialism in anticipation of transitioning to Communism), but it wasn't a Communist society.

>for some reason.
Because both were equated with the Iron Curtain and thus everything that used to be considered unamerican.
You have to choose to join the Democratic-Republicans or the Federalists.
Which one do you choose?
Bonus Points: Which one aligns with modern day Republicans and which one aligns with modern day Democrats?

>Bonus Points: Which one aligns with modern day Republicans and which one aligns with modern day Democrats?
Why the fuck do Americans always try to shoehorn everything into their retarded political system where not even red is left wing.
>>1312393
Democratic-Republicans, Hamilton was a shit
>Bonus Points: Which one aligns with modern day Republicans and which one aligns with modern day Democrats?
That's easy, the Democratic-Republicans align with modern Republicans and the Federalists with Democrats. Not that they're actually similar but hey you asked the question.

Why can't Americans invent their own symbols?
I see both factions being equally vehement about the others being absolute barbarians
who are the aggressors? Was the Azeri invasion this year justified?
>>1312328
I'll sum it up: The land has always been Armenian and was over 90% Armenian at the end of WW1 when both countries were annexed by the Soviet Union. Before then the British Allied forces had betrayed the Armenian forces who controlled the area by saying it would be given to them at the Paris Peace Conference, but in actuality wanted to give it to the new Tartar state called "Azerbaijan", taking the name of the Iranian province it is not part of, in order to access their Caspian oil reserves in return. Stalin also wanted to put the region under the Azeri SSR both because he wanted to create conflict and good relations with Turkey.
During Soviet rule, Artsakh Armenians were treated as second class citizens in their own land (Karabakh is the name foreigners use). Lots of churches were demolished, the use of the Armenian language was discouraged, and lots of Azeris were settled in the area. By the end of the Soviet period the region was about 70% Armenian.
The Soviet Union was falling apart and independence would soon be given to its states. Armenians wanted Artsakh to be joined wih Armenia, and in response atrocities were committed against Armenian civilians living under the Azeri sphere. This led to war for the region. Armenians were on their own. Russia funded both sides for money. Azeris recived lots of help from Turkey, Chechen and Paki jihadists, and Israeli bankers, but they all got BTFO and the Armenians of Artsakh declared an independent republic.

Why are so many in the humanities ignorant of economics?
It's embarrassing really.
Because economic is serious science of the level of math, physics and engineering and we all know that humanities hate STEM.

How France was able to get into The World War II victory club? United State used the most powerful weapon in History, sure. Great Britain fought until the end from the start. Soviets role in undeniable, just see how many Nazis died in Stalingrad battle or something... What the fuck France doing here?
Brownie points
de Gaulle was leader of the Resistance so he was leader of the Republic toward the end of the war when it was liberated and because the Resistance fought very very hard they got a special place with the big boys

How can a Jew, or anyone for that matter, justify God's existence and the necessity of evil after this? How do you witness people getting baked in ovens, their screams silenced by throats melting shut, skin sloughing like a serpent shedding and be scared of the Hell that awaits the disbelieving? You're in it already. Life is garbage, and no amount of love for God will change that. Is this a test? What is the question, oh Great Teacher? How long it takes to lose all hope in virtue? What are these Chosen People chosen for? To suffer above everyone else? Why pray? Why? What good does it do? Will a miracle ever occur in your sight, so as to give you some sort of reason for continuing? No, miracles are for people who lived thousands of years ago, not you! But nevertheless, I won't keep you from groveling enough to the incorporeal air so as to get your all-expense paid trip to Sugarcandy Mountain

Faith helped many survive the camps and in turn go on to live fairly healthy lives. There's even been studies on this.
I'd say it was worth it since Jews finally returned to their promised land after 2000 years of wandering.
How come culturally, Britain seems so much more closer to ANZACS than Canadians? Same with emigration, there seems like theres tons of Brits with direct connections down under, but not out west. Is American dominance to blame over the north? Or were Brits simply never too interested in Canada?
Nobody likes Canadians

When Rome was a republic, would you say they were mostly centrist on a political chart or did they lean more toward the right?
I understand they had a very large government and that their state works extended to providing mail service, giving bread to the poor (ancient welfare), free water from public aqueducts, free sewage service, and public roads. Which makes them quite a left-wing society.
But on the other hand, they were also very right-wing, due to their large military, nationalism, and other things like that.
Would this make the Romans, essentially, moderate/mixed, in comparison to most nations today who lean more left-wing or right-wing on their economic and fiscal policies?
Did the Roman Republic have the best of both worlds, left-wing and right-wing?
>>1310020
Modern political classifications dont really work when applied to ancient cultures
>>1310039
One could argue Rome was a modern state of its time, they were so organized of a state that they could be considered a modern nation due to that alone.
>>1310056
They were an oligarchy of landed nobility

What can I do with my life if I stick with History as a career?
I know that many famous people have a degree in history, but they all ended up doing something else.
I love History, but I'm starting to get disillusioned. First of all, I don't get much human contact because I spend most of my time reading books and contributing to Wikipedia, so there's practically no way to make connections with important people except for other people who like history. Second, I don't have a clue about how I'm going to make a living once I'm done with college. Third, I'm starting to think: "What the fuck am I doing with my life? Why am I not focusing on myself, and why am I focusing on dead people who have nothing to do with me?" Lastly, I'm getting tired of being looked down on by others whenever I mention that I'm in History.
To put it bluntly, I don't want to spend the rest of my life spending 6-8 hours a day making edits to Wikipedia, because honestly that's what gives me the most pleasure in my life at the moment. But it makes me think: "For what fucking purpose am I doing this? Why contribute to the historical knowledge of others, when the vast majority will never give a shit and think of me as a shut-in autist."
Lastly, I don't really have an answer to the question: "How do you know that your historical knowledge isn't biased or falsified?" What am I supposed to tell people like that? (I'm into pre-modern history, not modern shit)

>What can I do with my life if I stick with History as a career?
Teach/nothing.
One of my ex boyfriends studied a M. A. in History. Now he is running my hometown´s museum and published a book. You can do a lot of shit as long as you have some connections and concrete ideas about what you may want to do with your degree.
>>1308162
OP here. While arguing with a "friend" about History, I said the cliched line of "You need to know history to avoid making the same mistakes" but he countered with "What's the point of history when people will make the same mistakes over and over again no matter what."
What can I say to counter that?
