What are some good books to read covering the Crusades? I've heard about God's War and Through Arab Eyes but not sure whether they are biased or not. Any recommendations?
The Crusades by Zoe Oldenbourg

Robert de Clari's 'the Conquest of Constantinople' on the Fourth Crusade is a good read. I had to use it for a uni project. He was a lowly knight who participated in the crusade and gives a nice perspective of the events.
How about these, they any good?
The Crusades: A History - Jonathan Riley-Smith

So... How people like Stalin and Mao was able to kill like millions of other people? Surely, possible victims can realize that they are fucked by tyrant and try to rebel or something. Elites can see how crazy the guy is and overthrow him. People could just leave the country or something. Why citizens doesn't even tried to oppose only one crazy guy?

it's not like Mao and Stalin directly went out into the country with a shotgun and started shooting people. Many of the people who died under their regimes died due to starvation from mismanagement (collectivization or in Mao's case also failed attempts at increasing production). They also had powerful people working under them who due to sycophancy, incompetence or both were a large part of the problem as well. There were individuals within the party that opposed Stalin or Mao respectively but they either were proscribed or purged by the loyal faction.

>Surely, possible victims can realize that they are fucked by tyrant and try to rebel or something
Can't say anything about Mao but Russians have a bad case of "Kind Czar surrounded by evil boyars".
>Comrade Stalin is eliminating all those enemies of the people! How great that is!
>What do you mean, I'm the enemy of the people? It's just a mistake!
>Stalin just wasn't informed well! Surely it's a misunderstanding! He doesn't know!
Doesn't help that despotism is essentially their natural habitat.
The far right is a big problem here but so are most 'extreme' parties whether they be religious or other wise. Globally the issues we should be tackling are the root causes.
If you look at the concentrated distribution of wealth throughout the west and the rest of the world - you'll see that there is a positive correlation between how poor a nation / region is and how extreme its members of the community are prepared to act.
Evidence points to more access to higher educational materials , not just schooling but open - source leads to people being able to make better rational decisions and to live their lives independently from a doctrine spelt out by the 'masters of mankind' (the masters being powerful people who create doctrines that do not benefit the entire human populous and only a small group of themselves: ISIS, Labour, Conservative, Republican etc) So if people are choosing not to follow extreme ideas because of better wealth distribution - that should be the focus point.
The UK is about to decide whether or not it should leave the EU. If it does leave, this would be a massive regressive step on a chess board to big to comprehend.

Bring a better chart, I bet Venezuela is lighter now, maybe Russia too
The chart is neither here nor there. The chart represents a snap shot of time. It is constantly changing. The point is that by treating countries as monoliths we are never going to create an equal society and we will always have a maxim per country that is trying to out do the rest of the world.
The far right is a big problem here but so are most 'extreme' parties whether they be religious or other wise. Globally the issues we should be tackling are the root causes.
Sweden, Finland, UK (if not for fptp), Austria and France all have groups that you would label as "FAR RIGHT EXTREMISTS" leading polls and making up the governments.

Was Nero really that bad or is it just a meme? If it just a meme what other rules was represented by being much worse than they are in reality?
Is this an accurate depiction of Nero?
>>1303107
No. Now fuck back off to /a/
>>1303047
A meme is just an idea that can be transmitted from person to person. All human knowledge is composed of memes.
Celts are a fucking joke. Vikings can oftentimes be overhyped, but there is truth that they raided far and wide, even had an empire (Cnut's North Sea Empire), and influenced the peoples around them at least as much as they themselves were influenced. What did Celts do? Go on the decline since the bronze age. Bitched by Italics out of continental Europe and then in the British Isles by Germanics. They mostly can't speak their own fucking language for fucks sake. HURR BIG CLAYMORE LMAO ENGLISH ARE GAY LOL they just about never won a war and I'm convinced they're only hyped because their cucked diaspora has saturated the English-speaking civilised world. The only successful Scots have been Anglic Lowlanders.
Don't forget that Celts were literal cucks as their women were free to fuck who they want and the guys themselves resorted to fucking other guys.
Cucks and faggots.
Why are the English so bitter and butthurt over the Scots?
>I'M ANGRY
>ANGRY ABOUT SCOTS
Wait, so Mannerheim was black? Why did the Nazis ally with Finland then?
Just fucking kill yourself you cancerous shitposting twat
Hitler shook a black mans hand when FDR wouldnt even see him.
Despite what retarded overuse of the word, neonazis, and modern propaganda would imply the Nazis were allied with many Black and Arab countries. Nazi only hated Gypsies, Jews, and the like. They didnt really give a shit about what went ethnically on on other contienents

What are some noteable known examples of descendants of well-known historical figures?
It's easy to track down the ancestory of royal figures, but for other famous people, such as scientists, it feels like their offspring went under the radar. The only case that comes to my mind is Rommel's son being the mayor of some city in Germany.

Being the closest thing to a Nazi Communist one could possibly be, and seeing humans as living automatons. Not mindless machines per se, as they would still have to cultivate themselves and practice sports, while still working, but legions of clones with the same needs. No place for individualism. Every one would have to be a perfectly happy and comfortable member of the collectivity.
He just forgot Humans have a taste for emotions and feelings, and a tendency to not enjoy living in concrete cubes.
i'm going to begin university soon, and i'm interested in majoring in history or museum studies. but are there any real jobs i could get with those degrees? do any of you work in a history related job?
also, i only care to make enough money in order to live. i don't intend to live a big life, so making shit money is not a huge problem.
>>1300053
No there's not many job directly related. But it's a fascinating topic.
>>1300053
I mean there's teaching. I'm in uni and I want to be a history teacher. You can also work in a museum, or if in the states, places like your city hall.
history graduate here
honestly history has 2 viable paths once you have your bachelors, teaching or law. that really boils down to what your passion is. if you want to stay in jobs related to history go into teaching and do what you love, just know that teaching is a lot more competitive, where getting a Masters is pretty much necessary to even teach high school with the competition you face.
Law is more like putting the skills you honed in history put to another use, it's a lot of research and reading, a lot of writing and persuading people to buy into your argument like you would any thesis. Only problem is that it's not history, you're just using your talents in a more lucrative area.
I ended up choosing law and ended up as a paralegal as I'm nowhere near able to afford law school. and honestly it worked out okay for me, make $18 an hour and at least able to be self-sufficient. but both paths are equally viable depending on what you really want to end up doing.

Why don't you smoke?
>comparatively good for you
>at least not AS bad for you as other drugs
>cheap
>from the earth
Reminder if you use others examples and experiences as your own you are ignorant
Reminder you cannot form a proper opinion of something you have never fully tried
Reminder almost everyone alive has some sort of vice, who are you to judge who does what?
None of these are really compelling reasons to indulge in small potatoes.
Weed culture is awful, and this is coming from someone who smokes literally everyday. Smoking just to get high is an absolutely worthless hobby, but getting high to program, write music, read history or watch documentaries is simply amazing. I pity those who smoke just to get high, those are the idiots that move onto harder drugs once their tolerance is far too strong.
I wouldn't recommend weed for most people. Most stoners I know are useless humans, only those with the discipline that can enjoy it responsibly as a pastime should do it.
>>1318536
Well it has the obvious perks of being relaxing and 'fun'. But I didn't want to mention those obvious qualities.
It's your turn now to say why you don't smoke, without using ignorance as your example.
