I'm doing some research for a game based in a Middle Eastern setting, and I was hoping /his/ could shed some light on a few things. Although the setting uses mythological elements, I'm not sure how to balance that against what might be perceived as a conventionally Middle Eastern political or societal atmosphere.

For instance, women in parts of the Middle East largely don't share the same rights as their male counterparts, which seems at odds with the existence of female warriors in, say, Persian history or mythology. This might create a problem for players who want to play as a female character, depending on the type of government or ruling class most prevalent in the game. Should prominent in-game governments just not enforce these types of gender politics at all? Is there any sensible way to balance Islamic themes against ancient or mythological themes?

I don't think /tg/ can help here, as they're doubtfully as versed in Middle Eastern history.

/tg/ is actually very well versed on Persian history.

I wouldn't bring it up, to be honest. Historical realism is nice and all, but player experience should be the priority. Unless it's a plot point, I'd feel a bit uncomfortable with the GM bringing up my character's gender just for kicks.

This doesn't need to apply to NPCs, btw. Feel free to have different standards for PCs and NPCs, that could actually make for interesting situations.

Is there a way to summarize what Sufism is/was? Every explanation I read of it just doesn't make much sense to me. I guess it's because I don't really understand the concept of mysticism in the first place.

Dank Islamic Memes.

You are not a piece or part of humanity, you are humanity. Every emotion that has ever been felt by another has also been felt by you. Everyone else constructs their consciousness through thought and so do you.

So ask me any question about the nature of human life, and I will try to give you insight into the nature of your question and provide some facts to guide you.

Are arrogance and insecurity always on the same chain? Are peoples' pompousness always hiding insecurities? Are peoples' insecurity always indicative of their un-appreciated self importance?
>>
>>1460846
>blabla every emotion has been felt by you
On what grounds do you think you know that? Also, what emtotions are there? Is it a gradient of well being? A fixed set?
>>

> Are arrogance and insecurity always on the same chain?

You are asking if arrogance and insecurity go hand and hand, that one cannot be arrogant without being insecure. If one is arrogant, then you would call that misdirected self insurance. Somebody who is arrogant is afraid to face the fact that they might not be what they really are, mediocre. So they hide behind their arrogant self to hide away their true self.

> Are peoples' pompousness always hiding insecurities?

The insecurity of being wrong. Of being what one is not. We all have images of ourselves we aspire to attain, those who are arrogant are afraid not to be as they think.

> Are peoples' insecurity always indicative of their un-appreciated self importance?

One can be arrogant but still feel they have some importance. I may be insecure in my looks but I'm not insecure in my job for example. Arrogance does not have to be ones entire life. It can be parts of their life. But then what do those arrogant parts tell you about them?

Can someone give me a rundown of the 1054 schism, what led up to it and how long it was in the making etc
17 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
There were some theological differences that developed between the West and East over time (not that the Copts, who split long before the great schism, are still on the same page as the Eastern Orthodox theologically, so these developing differences came mostly from the West's theology changing over time). But these differences were at the time relatively minor, and could have been resolved. Really the only serious issue was that Pope Leo IX started pushing the Donation of Constantine in letters to the East in order to justify Papal Supremacy (which is far different from primacy, primacy is not an actual office).
>>
>>1461090
Lets be frank, while Orthodox and Copts have solved most of there differences now, a thousand years ago, they most certainly saw their theology as being incompatible.

Its pretty clear that the papacy and its allies as least from late antiquity considered itself to have supremacy, you can see it from the church councils. its also clear that the east generally rejected this.
>>
>>1461137
*sigh*

If you want to understand theology from a thousand years ago, I recommend "Christ in Eastern Christian Thought". It literally ALWAYS was semantics and it was pointed out as such, the only reason it became an issue of contention is because there were many theologians imposing a crypto-Nestorian reading on Chalcedon. It wasn't so much that Copts disagreed with the formula as it is intended by the Eastern Orthodox, it is that they saw it as a back door for Nestorianism (which did happen with several theologians). Likewise, the Eastern Orthodox never had an issue with the intent of the Coptic formula, they're only concern was that it could be used as a backdoor for Apollinarism (which it was by several theologians).

Literally all Orthodox and Copts have done is agree to what was already in the Fifth Ecumenical Council, which gives qualified approval for both formulas; two natures is approved so long as it is intended as purely a conception division, and one nature is approved so long as "nature" is intended as an extension or synonym of hypostasis

The idea that the Pope had universal jurisdiction over the whole Church was certainly not a large idea in antiquity.

Historically there was no restrictions on what weapon you could bring to a japanese duel.

Bokuden beat a naginata wielder with a nodachi by cutting through the shaft of the weapon. Muso Genosuke allegedly took on Musashi with a short staff, and won.

Would technology have advanced extremely fast in the 20th century if there were no world wars?

Tough to say. Without World War 2, would Radar, Rocket technology, and Nuclear fission have been created? The thing about war is it to the test human ingenuity, and is one of the greatest incentives for innovation. The technological advances created in a fury of R&D during wartime find incredible civilian applications once we've stopped using them to kill.
>>
No.
Wars create scientific progress as government is willing to spend more.
US would have never gone to moon without the German scientists from WW2.
Ultimately every single piece of advanced technology we use on a regular basis was a result of WW2, which was a result of WW1.
Computers, phones, games, all resulted from progress made during WW2.
Without those wars we would not have made so much progress.

>>

It's also a fact that the earliest known use of runic magic in Iceland only dates to the 17th century from grimoires like the Galdrabók, while Abrahamic use of gematria in symbolic chambers has centuries of aggregate mysticism to support it, like the Sephir Raziel, Picatrix, Sworn Book of Honorius, Clavicule, etc.
>>
I think it's more important to compare meanings of symbols becuase I'm sure there have been hundreds of cultures that used simple shapes like those to represent abstracts

Enlighten me /his/, why was everyone so shocked about shellshocked soldiers returning from WW1? Surely there would have been plenty of cases of PTSD pre-WW1, 18th century line battles for example look like the perfect setup for PTSD.

I've always assumed it was because of artillery and such killing more people than back then, but I'm not convinced your average 18th century soldier never saw enough death to not suffer PTSD.

>>
I remember reading somewhere PTSD has to do with the almost of time you spend in battle. This is also why PTSD was so bad in Vietnam, the mobility of helicopters meant that soldiers were in almost constant combat.

Before WW1 soldiers spent most of their time marching or sitting around before a decisive battle.
