What do recipients of the highest military medals, whether it is the Medal of Honor, the Victoria Cross, Iron Crosses no matter which one, have in common? Are there similarities between a high amount of recipients? In other words is there a type of person that earns such a type of medal?
I'm thinking socio-economic background, familylife, strong parent-figures, abcense of fathers, large/small families, natural born leaders etc. Have there been noticed similarities or percentages of soldiers.
>>3254036
Straight white men. Notice how white males seem to be the most moral and heroic people on earth.
I seem to remember an article where it stated a good percentage of, I think, VC recipients were oldest brothers from a large family. But I can't remember the exact wording to look it up on the internet. It broke down some similarities

(you) While it's a given most of them are white I was expecting a somewhat more mature approach to the subject
How is it that The Buddha, Confucius, and Socrates all lived within a century of eachother, their lifespans surely overlapping? Is it a coincidence? What were their greatest contributions. I usually cite them as the most influential thinkers in all of history.
>>3254004
I don't know much about Buddha, but I do know that Buddhism is pure decline. As for Confucius and Socrates, they are preserved thanks to their students. They were influential, but not independent of those who preserved them.
It would be better to say that the period between 5th c. and 3rd c. was an absolute high point in many areas.
>>3254030
Just because Buddhism is in decline doesn't mean his ideas are. Most are preserved in the teachings of "jeebus crust" who, unwittingly, took and repackaged his thoughts.

>Buddha
Does he actually exist or is he like Jesus - a placeholder for the amalgamation of buddhist philosophers?

At what times in history has the concept of baldness changed?
Yes, im balding...
Huge success of a thread.
Mental note: do not bump next time.
I was wondering th same thing. Not balding but I was looking at pictures of people in the past with broad foreheads and high hairlines yet they were adored and had women all over them.
Just shave it off for chrissake.
Which philosophers and thinkers would be sorted into which Hogwarts houses?

Why is history of Eastern Europe so grim and hardcore?
>>3253467
Slavs are a grim and hardcore people.
>>3253467
Because it was Europe's wall against Nomadic hordes.
>>3253467
Sharing borders with the Muslim hordes made Eastern Europeans resort to extreme measures to defend themselves. For example, Vlad impaled people to scare shit out of invaders. Well that and he was plain batshit.
Was Hercules a real person?

Weren't they a real group that just got mythologized out of proportion to their actual influence?
With all the things that have been going on lately, i'm kinda lost. What was the Civil War really about ?
Slavery ? Cultural differences ? Economic reasons ? Were the southerners really the bad guys ?
Let's not turn this thread into /pol/, I want honest answers
It was about slavery, yes. The Southern States wanted to keep slavery, the North had joined the rest of the civilized world in wanting to end it.
>>3252999
did they really wage a war they had little chance to win just to continue to own slaves ?
>southern economy (and society) is dependent on slavery
>north wants to, at the very least, limit slavery to the south and stop it spreading west
>lincoln wins the 1860 election on this platform (without any southern support)
>south realizes they lack the political power to keep slavery going in the future, so they secede''
I've also heard that secession was not universally supported in the South, but more average Southerners started supporting it when the U.S. Army started showing up. I don't know to what extent this is "dindu nuffin" revisionism though (One needs to be careful, because muh (((Lost Cause))) was the dominant narrative for 100 years of U.S. History, and many people still unironically believe it)

Why did the French go full autism against this guy? Was it pure ideology, or was he really a tyrant?
Ask a Huguenot.

After Napoleon he's the second most idolized French ruler

charlemagne, charles de gaulle and vercingetorix come first.
>A cavalry officer who regularly wore both a sword and a monocle, Saucken personified the archetypal aristocratic Prussian conservative who despised the braune Bande ("brown mob") of Nazis. When he was ordered to take command of the Second Army on 12 March 1945, he came to Hitler's headquarters with his left hand resting casually on his cavalry sabre, his monocle in his eye, . . . [and then] saluted and gave a slight bow. This was three 'outrages' at once. He had not given the Nazi salute with raised arm and the words 'Heil Hitler', as had been regulation since 20 July 1944, he had not surrendered his weapon on entering....and had kept his monocle in his eye when saluting Hitler.
>When Hitler told him that he must take his orders from Albert Forster, the Gauleiter (Nazi governor, or "District Leader") of Danzig, Saucken returned Hitler's gaze....and striking the marble slab of the map table with the flat of his hand, he said, 'I have no intention, Herr Hitler, of placing myself under the orders of a Gauleiter'. In doing this he had bluntly contradicted Hitler and not addressed him as Mein Führer.
>To the surprise of everyone who was present, Hitler capitulated and replied, "All right, Saucken, keep the command yourself." Hitler dismissed the General without shaking his hand and Saucken left the room with only the merest hint of a bow.
>Paulus, a Roman Catholic, was opposed to suicide. During his captivity, according to General Max Pfeffer, Paulus said of Hitler's expectation: "I have no intention of shooting myself for this Bohemian corporal."
>Another general told the NKVD (the public and secret police organisation of the Soviet Union) that Paulus had told him about his promotion to field marshal and said: "It looks like an invitation to commit suicide, but I will not do this favour for him." Paulus also forbade his soldiers from standing on top of their trenches in order to be shot by the enemy.
>>3252573
So he fought willingly for Hitler for years, leading troops in invasions of other nations for him, and only towards the end showed some resistance.
Hmm... better late than never, but I don't know if this really amounts to cucking.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henning_von_Tresckow
>When the assassination attempt on Hitler and the following coup in Berlin (the 20 July plot) had failed, Tresckow decided to commit suicide at the front in Królowy Most near Białystok on 21 July. His parting words to Schlabrendorff were:
>The whole world will vilify us now, but I am still totally convinced that we did the right thing. Hitler is the archenemy not only of Germany but of the world. When, in few hours' time, I go before God to account for what I have done and left undone, I know I will be able to justify what I did in the struggle against Hitler. God promised Abraham that He would not destroy Sodom if only ten righteous men could be found in the city, and so I hope for our sake God will not destroy Germany. No one among us can complain about dying, for whoever joined our ranks put on the shirt of Nessus. A man's moral worth is established only at the point where he is ready to give his life in defense of his convictions.[6]
>To protect other conspirators, he staged an appearance of partisan attack by firing his pistols and then dispatched himself by holding a hand grenade below his chin and detonating it. He was buried in the family home in Wartenberg. When the Nazis learned about his connections in late August, his body was exhumed and taken to the crematorium in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. His wife was arrested on 15 August, and her children taken away under Nazi policy of Sippenhaft (shared family guilt); however, early in October she was released and survived the war.
I work with his great-grandson. Good kid. We talk about how Nazis ruined Germany every now and then.
Tell me about Watergate. What happened and how can Trump avoid a similar fate?
>>3252144
The saddest thing is that Nixon was actually an immensely popular president prior to Watergate. He was effectively guaranteed to win re-election. His entire legacy has been tainted simply because he cheated when he didn't need to.
>>3252159
he already won reelection, he resigned in his second term
Reminder that Nixon presided over the moon landings in their entirety.
