Stalin obviously wasn't ready for war, so it was logical that they'd ally through the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pack to buy time. Stalin knew the Germans will attack but never knew exactly when. By the time the Germans attacked, the USSR still wasn't ready to defend at all.

The British still was capable of defending themselves through air raid attacks and battleships, but their un-modern ground forces weren't up to par with the Germans.

There is an argument that Britain needed to take down Germany and Russia, or they would inevitably begin to outproduce her industrially; this was the trend before the war. Unlike the USA, they could not be relied on to be friendly.

So in a sense, Britain lucked out, two enemies were set back half a century.

There's some. They were never big on writing, or even staying in one place, so most of what we know is through the Persians and Byzantines. We know a bit about their paganism and a bit about the tribes who were in power shortly before the rise of Islam. We also have a general sense of their cultural attitude based on how the Rashidun and Umayyad Caliphates would behave.

Most of it isn't pretty. It's probably not a surprise that the actual day-to-day of running the civilization was handed over to recently-converted Persian nobility relatively quickly.
