Republican* brainwashing.

Why is it that, when it comes to the "mysteries" of their theology, religious believers will implore you to have faith, but at the same time, will dispute you and demand facts from you?
56 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
They compartmentalize the ridiculous aspects of their religion into an "emotional" category which places devotion as the highest possible virtue, beyond rationality, indeed many religious people will outright reject rational thought as somehow "evil".

On the other hand as homo sapiens, they are still intrinsically capable of recognizing rational arguments as more convincing. So they revert to standard argumentation when they suspect it will be an effective way to win a point, as per typical debate.

Finally it's important to note that a religious person will never ever argue in good faith. To them debates are purely a display of loyalty to their leaders and to satisfy their self-imposed duty to promote their religion.

What about the Japanese military allowed them to conquer almost all of East Asia during the Imperial period? What about the Japanese military made them fall in WW2 to the Americans? Were their any noteworthy attributes of their tactics/equipment/structure?

>Prior to WW2, tensions were incredibly high between the Commonwealth and the USA
>FDR himself had a staunchly anti British sentiment, and stated that Britain must give up its 'Medieval Like' Empire.
>After the British went to war with Germany, no immediate response was even expected of the USA.
>Meanwhile, The Soviet Union uses this to begin a friendship with the British post-Barbarossa
>After the Second World War, The British are economically blackmailed by the US in trade, and are cornered into giving the Indians Independence.
>The British Empire is now a handful of tiny populated African Colonies after Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand fully gain independence
>Rather than repeal the temporary alliance with the British, the Soviets instead maintain somewhat positive relations with the British.
>Meanwhile, The US and the United Nations are bullying the UK into giving up all remaining dominions.
>In the Suez Crisis, Eisenhower threatens to completely ruin the British Pound if they do not pull out, further economically blackmailing Britain and France
>By 1960, the Empire was almost completely dead and Britain as well as the rest of Western Europe was essentially under American Command
>Despite this, both nations now insist they have a 'Special Relationship' and are close friends since WW2. Americans and British are taught they happily fought side by side in WW2.

Is there any greater brainwashing in history?

Live to old age, have a family that gives me grandchildren, be kind to people, try to do something that contributes to advancing society but that would simply be cherry on top

when you're close to death, it changes how you feel about life. I'm not close to death, but I thought that I was for a couple of weeks and I learned a lot about myself in that time. I'm an atheist, but after my experience of even thinking that I may die, I don't mind death nearly as much as I did.

The fact that you're alive at all right now is a miracle. You are very lucky, and are owed nothing. You should be glad that you woke up today and got the chance to experience life for another day.

Being asleep or dead isn't that big of a deal, but since you're here, you should make the most of the life you have and I don't mean that in some nihilistic way.

>Germany invades Poland 1939
>Britain and France declare war
>Germany still must invade the Soviet Union to prevent eventual invasion from USSR into western Europe

With these factors, how could Germany win the war? Should they have invaded earlier (how should they have dealt with Yugoslavia and Greece though)? Should they have invaded later (the more time went by, the stronger the Soviets got)?
270 posts and 41 images submitted.
>>
>>1509857
They couldn't have. Britain wasn't going to give up the ghost for anything and the route the U.S. was heading on meant that no one was going to run out of supplies anytime soon. Germany was doomed as soon as war broke out.
>>
>>1509857

You can't. About the only way that Germany MIGHT win from a 1939 start is if the British are so absolutely stupid as to go through with Operation Pike, and the Soviets react badly enough to being bombed in the Cuacasus that they actually join the Axis in 1940. Other than that, you're hosed.

And even then, you have to deal with the not insignificant problem of the U.S. eventually joining and dropping nukes on everyone.
>>
The only plausible victory for the Germans would have been something along these lines: The Nazi party survives, Germany doesn't lose it's pre-war territory.

This could be achieved perhaps by making a peace with the soviets when the Blizkrieg was still kicking the Soviets around. Don't get involved with the U.S. Make peace with the Brits. Build up alliances with the west against the soviets after the war.

A scenario where Germany would have really "won" i.e Hitler's dreams would have been fulfilled is impossible. No way, Hitler could not have won a sustained war with the Soviets.

336 posts and 20 images submitted.

No, probably not. But until an objective morality system is proven to be objective (as in, not just the moral tenets of it follow from objective principles, but that the central principle from which these stem is objectively a "good") I'll probably continue to hold to it.

>Something else than me exists

>>1517918

It can't be anything but subjective. Things are only good or bad from the perspective of a subject. Nothing is good or bad for the universe as a whole, so there is no objective good or bad.

I know jackshit about WW1, not more than the fact the French, Brits and Germans stood freezing in some trenches. But the Russians?.. Nooo.. Tell me all about 'em. Who did they fight in WW1? > Who did they fight in WW1?

Germans, Austro-Hungarians, and Turks primarily.

> Why did they fight?

Initial pretext was to stick up for the Serbs when Austria-Hungary invaded. As for a lot of the real motivation, fear of the rising power of Germany was a big reason why the goverment was in the game.

>And all the shit inbetween about the glorious country that was shat on by the reds.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. Can you clarify?

How common were power struggles between King and Church in medieval Europe? Who was often more powerful?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Very common.
John Lackland was pretty much beaten by pope Innocentius III. His desperation resulted in the Magna Carta.
Many French and German rulers created Antipopes to try and get some leverage.
The pope was generally supreme.
The church was the single largest landholder in western Europe, and the pope had more wealth and influence than any western monarch. On top of that the Pope is the one who both appoints Kings, and the one who can threaten your afterlife via excommunication (this was a big deal).

On the flip side we have the Byzantine empire and eastern European countries that were influenced by it.
Here we see caesaropapism.
The Emperor is above the church.
The patriarch of Constantinople was still a very powerful man. The empire generally tried to keep the state and church on the same side. To present the state and church as one entity (DOUBLE HEADED EAGLE, DUDE HERALDRY LMAO)
Notably the Byzantine Emperor meddled directly in the elections for the Patriarch as he named one of the candidates (who better be the winning one), while the Pope was elected by cardinals (corruption here was notable, but not so much from kings, more like wealthy merchants Alexander VI bribed his way into his position).
>>
Very common, you essentially had two powers in every country which vied for power. The church lost in the end.

Becket is less a case of church vs state and more asshole vs state. The guy was just a fucking prick, every compromise he shot down, even the Pope thought he was a little bitch.
>>
Don't know how big of a meme it is but afaik the Pope sanctioned the Norman invasion of England because the anglos were appointing their own bishops and Stigand for one paid homage to an anti-pope and the normans basically promised to be good goys if they got the papal banner for conquest
