Is democracy's biggest enemy a good autocrat?
>good autocrat
depends on what you mean by that family
>>1520798
no, it's republicanism
>>1520819

The Cold War
So how rape happy was good ol' Temüjin?
There's plenty of stories of his soldiers committing war rape. But hardly anything on Mr. Khan having rapey hands (at least so few that I can find). I know that when they conquered a village or tribe, he would have most (if not all) the men killed, leaving him to be virtually the only partner available for sexy-times. Obviously they submitted willingly because of this. Yet I keep wondering if he ever forced himself onto some of the women. I'm not finding much to suggest whether this happened or not. But it does certainly fit with his character. And the idea that not one of them put up a fight seems implausible.
>>1520635
There's some circumstantial evidence that even his sons weren't actually his. It's possible that "something" might have happen to him while he was captured.
>>1520635
Everyone raped the losers wifes, that was the main part of fighting a war, why risk your life and fighting in the mud against people with pointy sticks with your own pointy stick and possibly die a slow and painfull death if you can't fuck the losers wife and daughter if you win?
I don't think rape existed as a concept back then as it does today.

jus primae noctis is a tradition as old as power itself & an effective sign & display of such throughout all ages... strongest gene survives etc
Humanity has just made first contact with aliens. The aliens need to decide if they wish to become our allies, or enemies. We, as a Humanity has made first contact. The aliens need to decide if they wish to become our allies, or enemies. We, as a species need to choose one person living or dead (we have the tech to bring them back) to send as humanity's representative to negotiate peace, or to intimidate them enough so they flee home. Who do you choose? To make war or peace? and why?

They can also see us as so primitive, they just ignore us. The same way you ignore animals in the forest.
This isn't really the right board for this. I'd try /Pol/ or maybe /x/
Was the sack of Baghdad in 1258 led by Hulagu that ended the Abbasid Caliphate really that bad to begin with for the islamic world?
>>1520394
highly over rated by pop-Historians and reddit. Yes it was devastating, but it wasn't the beginning of the end for Islamic civilization. People seem to forget the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals all had their zenith well after the Mongol invasions. Also the many great dynatsties that arose from Islamic Mongols.
>>1520394
Arabs specifically, though were permanently fucked after that though given that no dynasty of Arab origin ever arose afterwards with anywhere near level of prestige and power as the Caliphates
>>1520394
It's usually used as a deflection against "Islam is inherently violent" -- the Mongols shot first, etc.
All it did was really shift the focal point of the Islamic world from Baghdad to Al-Andalus and India -- at least until the Ottomans took Constantinople,
It's was similar to that same trigger point being the birth of the renaissance. Huge shifts of intellectual output and cultural dominance.
What if all media was state controlled but its staff was democratically elected?

It would be even more beholden to the winds of public opinion. At least right now, media has a THEORETICAL incentive to say unpopular things.

I know next to nothing about the ancient olympics.
Anyone well-versed in Ancient Greece want to explain the olympics in the context of their politics, society, and philosophy?
Any cool anecdotes from the original olympics?

they did it nakked

they wrestled to the death
Greeks would rather die than surrender
Does this concept work, or was it doomed from the start.
Descartes was pretty important so no.
What happens if it works or doesn't work?
>>1520216
Doomed from the start.
If art/philosophy can both be influenced by science and they can both influence religion, but science and religion must not influence each other, then you'll invariably end up with all sorts of weird contradictions.

I want to get into WWI and II reenacting but i'm not exactly sure where to begin or who I should get in contact with. I live in Michigan and this seems like a pretty great state to do reenactments in.
Don't.
It will destroy your self respect and turn women away from you if they ever find out.
My girlfriend thought I should get into reenactment and we have a club not long from here. But it's for 18th century stuff. I think I'll join eventually but not until autumn when I get some more money.

When did the Marian devotions begin, especially amongst the Roman Catholic Church?
Marian events such as the Assumption, Coronation as Queen of Heaven, recitation of the Rosary, and designation as Mediatrix; when and why did all of these develop in the Church?
These things were apparent from nearly the very beginning. They developed because they were believed by a substantial number of people.

What did he mean by this, /his/?
They learned from the best

Frankly, they were always pricks.
So were all of their neighbors.
The idea of Israel going from being the underdog to being an abusive hegemon ignores how crap their behavior was when they were still an underdog.
Palestinians deserve it though.
Der Judenstaat was published in 1896
The State of Israel is not the abusive child, it was the abusive parent all along
Would you agree with this statement?
There have been 5 "world wars".
1. Napoleonic Wars
2. World War 1
3. World War 2
4. Cold War
5. War on Terror

7 years war was more of a world war than fucking Napoleon shit. And Cold war wasn't a war at all.
