The goal of multiculturalism is to have mutliple cultures exist next to each other and in interaction with each other peacefully and succesfully. It is about everybody accepting that other people do things differently, and not making a fuss about it. Different cultures won't necessarily merge into a large one over time.

more understanding between cultures and peoples leads to less conflict and fear. also people are interested in other cultures, foods, fashions, etc. furthermore, more genetic diversity leads to more attactive and healthy gene pools. people who don't participate in otherwise diverse areas tend to hang on to their prejudices and hatreds.
